Gaurang Bagwe wins Federal Bank presents 2nd Tarabai Shinde Rapid Rating Open 2024

FM Gaurang Bagwe and Shrayan Majumder scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at Federal Bank presents 2nd Tarabai Shinde Rapid Rating Open 2024. Gaurang won the tournament on tie-breaks, Shrayan secured second place. Five players - IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh, Rushikesh Kabnurakar, Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi, IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam and Gaurang Bhandari scored 8/9 each. They were placed third to seventh respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each respectively. The one-day rapid rating tournament was organized by Mr. Nandakumar TV on 11th August 2024 at Agri Koli Sanskriti Bhavan in Nerul, Maharashtra. Velammal Vidyalaya Paruthipattu and Velammal MHS Mogappair dominate 2nd National Schools Team Under-12 and Under-18 Championships 2024

Top seed Velammal Vidyalaya Paruthipattu scored a perfect 18/18 to win 2nd National Schools Team Under-12 Champions. They finished three match points ahead of the rest. Velammal Vidyalaya Alapakkam and Velammal MHSS Mogappair scored 15/18 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. The Under-18 category was won by Velammal MHSS Mogappair. They also scored a perfect 18/18 to win the tournament. Velammal Vidyalaya Alapakkam secured second place scoring a sole 16/18. Kalvi International Public School, Madurai edged past Delhi Public School, Guwahati A Team on tie-breaks to finish third scoring 13/18. Harshad S dominates 23rd Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2024

IM-elect FM Harshad S scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 at 23rd Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2024. He finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the competition. WGM Uurtsaikh Uuriintuya (MGL) scored 6/9 to secure second place. IM Alexander Slizhevsky was placed third scoring 5.5/9. Harshad defeated the eventual runner-up, Uurtsaikh in the first round and drew with Slizhevsky in Round 6. The seven-day ten-player round-robin tournament was organized by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association at Abu Sarovar Portico  in Chennai, Tamil Nadu from 6th to 12th August 2024. Surya Ganguly takes a 17-2 lead against Sam Shankland in their Venceslav Rutar scoring system match

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly has taken a big lead after the first four rounds of his match against Sam Shankland! This match between Surya and Sam is being played following some unique rules - the Venceslav-Rutar scoring system. In the four games of 15 minutes + 5 second increment Rapid chess, Surya scored three wins and an equal draw against Sam. Four more games remain - they will take place today (3rd September) in lichess from 8:30 PM IST. IM Sagar Shah and GM Harshit Raja did live commentary for the match on the ChessBase India YouTube Channel. Himal Gusain clear first at Ciudad de Oviedo Open for the second consecutive year

IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 10th Ciudad de Oviedo Open 2024. He bettered his previous years performance by scoring a half point and finished a full point ahead of the rest. Eight players scored 7/9 each. Among them, GM Mikel Huerga Leache (ESP) and IM Ismael Alshameary Puente (ESP) secured second and third place respectively. Himal defeated both of them in Round 7 and 6 respectively. The top three prizes were €1200 + 1 year Chessable PRO Membership + 200€ Voucher for Chessable Courses, €800 + 6 months Chessable PRO Membership and €700 + 3 months Chessable PRO Membership. Kazakhstan Chess Federation invites you to Oskemen Open 2024. There are two tournaments - Masters (≥ 2100 for Men and ≥1900 for Women) and Open (1800-2100). The total prize fund in the Masters is ≈US$ 50000, and for Open ≈US$ 9329. The top three prizes are ≈US$ 2000, 1400 and 1000. Entry is FREE for GM, IM, WGM, WIM, FM, WFMs in the Masters, provided they meet the rating criteria mentioned above. Conditions are offered to players rated above 2550. Fabien Guilleux wins 28th Creon Open 2024, Nubairshah third

IM Fabien Guilleux (FRA) and IM Antoine Bournel (FRA) scored 7.5/9 each at 28th Creon Open Main (>1700) 2024. Fabien won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Antoine was secured second place. IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh and IM Kaustuv Kundu scored 7/9 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively. IM S Rohith Krishna is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 to claim sixth place. FIDE World Championship Match 2024 Regulations announced

FIDE has announced the Regulations for World Championship 2024 Match. The match will consist of 14 classical games. Each game will follow the time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment starting from move 41. The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the World Championship Match. If the score after fourteen games is equal, then tie-breaks will be played. Tie-break rules are changed compared to the previous match in 2023. Total prize fund of the match is US$ 2.5 Million. Avinash Ramesh wins 30th Chambery International Festival 2024

IM Avinash Ramesh, FM Christophe Gelas (FRA) and IM Sebastien Joie (FRA) scored 7/9 each at 30th Chambery International Chess Festival Main (>1800) 2024. Avinash won the tournament on tie-breaks. Gelas and Joie were placed second and third respectively. The last round loss against Joie did not affect the outcome for Avinash. The total prize fund for the Maint tournament was €2200. The top three prizes were €1000, €700 and €500 each. The seven-day nine round Rating tournament was organized by Club Echecs Agglomération Chambérienne at Centre des Congres le Manege in Chambery, France from 29th July to 4th August 2024. This was Avinash's first tournament triumph of the year.

Vladyslav Larkin victorious at 8th RGCC Open 2024, Sanket Chakravarty second

IM Vladyslav Larkin (UKR) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 8th RGCC International Open 2024. IM Sanket Chakravarty and FM Daniel Centron Antuna (ESP) scored 7/9 each. Sanket secured second place on tie-breaks, Daniel third. The top two finishers remained undefeated. Sanket drew with both Larkin and Daniel. The top three prizes were €1000 + trophy, €700 and €500 each respectively. The seven-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by Real Groupo de Cultura Covadonga at Real Grupo de Cultura Covadonga, Avenida Jesús in Gijón, Asturias in Spain from 29th July to 4th August 2024.

Arjun Erigaisi maintained his World no.4 position in FIDE Rating list September 2024. R Praggnanandhaa returned to 2750. Currently, there are four Indians in top 12, five in top 24, six in top 33, seven in top 41 and eleven in top 96. Among the Women, for the first time, there are four Indians in top 15. IM Divya Deshmukh moved up to World no.15 among women after her fine performance at 30th Abu Dhabi Masters 2024. FIDE World Rapid and Blitz championship 2024 will take place from 26th to 31st December in New York, USA. More details will be revealed in few weeks. One can expect the eligibility criteria, tournament regulations and total prize fund will be mentioned there. GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR), IM Anastasia Bodnaruk and GM Valentina Gunina are the defending champions. They would definitely like to defend their titles. Anwesh Upadhyaya wins a double at Summer Prague Open 2024

Dr. IM Anwesh Upadhyaya scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Summer Prague Open A 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM Jakub Pulpan (CZE) and FM Zino Veleshnja (ALB) scored 7.5/9 each to secure second and third place according to tie-breaks. All top three finishers remained undefeated. The top three prizes in A Open were 20000 + trophy, 15000 and 10000 CZK each. Anwesh also won the C Rapid event. Six players scored 6/7. Out of them, Anwesh won the tournament due to his best tie-break scores. The top three prizes in Rapid were 2000, 1500 and 1000 CZK each. Surya Ganguly takes on Sam Shankland in a Chess Match using the Venceslav Rutar scoring method

Venceslav Rutar from Slovenia is organizing a match between GM Sam Shankland and GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly on the 2nd and 3rd of September. What's so special about this event? As Venceslav says "Draws are not the problem. The problem is how we score them!" A unique scoring system will be used in this match - The traditional 1 (to the winner), ½ (to both the players) and 0 (to the loser) points are replaced by five possibilities: Win, Favored Draw, Equal Draw, Disfavored Draw, and loss. The match will take place on 2nd and 3rd September 2024.
