Alireza Firouzja (FRA) defeated Ding Liren (CHN) to increase his sole lead 5/7 at Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024. The world champion broke the center wide open at an inopportune moment. It cost him two pawns and made things worse. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) scored his first win of the event against Wesley So (USA). So also lost his game similarly when he dropped one pawn too many. It cost him the game. Fabiano Caruana (USA) missed an opportunity to push for a win against D Gukesh. Praggnanandhaa made a quick 19-move draw against Ian Nepomniachtchi. 61st National Championship R10: Neelash Saha outplays Sethuraman

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB) was held to a draw by IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) in the penultimate round of 61st National Championship. IM Neelash Saha (RSPB) outplayed GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) after the latter made a mistake in the endgame. Thus, dashing Sethuraman's hopes of retaining the crown. IM Himal Gusain (RSPB) defeated Utkal Ranjan Sahoo (ODI) by playing some attacking chess. He will pose the final challenge to Surya who is aiming for his seventh National title. GM Karthik Venkataraman (AP) defeated IM Ajay Karthikeyan (TN). GM Lalit Rohit (PSPB) made a short work of IM Nitin S (RSPB) in just 21 moves. Final Round 11 starts today at 10:30 a.m. IST. Aleksandar Indjic wins Timișoara Grand Prix Rapid 2024 via Armageddon, Leon Luke Mendonca second

GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) and GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored 8.5/10 each at Timișoara Grand Prix Rapid 2024. Indjic won the Armageddon with black pieces against Leon to become the champion. This is the fourth leg of the Romania GP 2024. Nine players scored 8/10. GM Gleb Dudin (HUN) secured third prize due to better tie-break score. The total prize fund of the tournament was €30000. The top three prizes were €5000, €3000 and €2000 each respectively. A total of 378 players including 36 GMs, 26 IMs, 5 WGMs and 2 WIMs participated from 25 countries across the world. R Praggnanandhaa drew with the world champion, Ding Liren quickly in Round 6 of Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024. D Gukesh keeps fighting every single game. He played enterprising chess against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). However, there was no clear path for him to earn a full point. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) drew with Wesley So (USA) to maintain his sole lead 4/6. Ian Nepomniachtchi fell for a very common idea in the Sicilian Dragon. He made a mistake which club level players make, allowing Fabiano Caruana (USA) to score a win. Both Caruana and So are now at 3.5/6, a half point behind the sole leader. 61st National Championship R9: Aronyak Ghosh reduces the gap with Surya Sekhar Ganguly

India's highest rated IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) played outstanding positional chess to beat FM Arjun Adireddy (TEL). He is now just a half point behind 7.5/9 the sole leader, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB) 8/9. Surya drew with his unit-mate GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB). Aronyak will face Surya in the penultimate round. IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete (MAH) sacrificed an exchange, used his strong knights to stir up trouble and beat GM Pa Iniyan (TN). Currently, 13 players are at 7/9 each. Suvradeepta Das clinches 18th Santa Eugenia de Ter Below 2400 Rating 2024, Ambarish Sharma second

Suvradeepta Das scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win XVIII Santa Eugenia de Ter Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Ambarish Sharma scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. Juan Alber Garcia Caro (CAT) edged past three other players to finish third on tie-breaks. The total prize fund was €3100. The top three prizes were €750, €500 and €250 along with a trophy each. The five-day nine-round tournament was organized by Club d'Escacs Santa Eugènia at Espai Marfa in Santa Eugenia de Ter, Catalan, Spain from 29th July to 2nd August 2024. Srinath Rao S V wins Jönköping Chess Festival 2024

IM Srinath Rao S V scored 7.5/9 to win Jönköping Chess Festival 2024 - Standard. FM Emerik Vapenstad Roulet-Dubonnet (NOR) also scored 7.5/9. The Norwegian was placed second according to tie-breaks. IM Vilka Sipila (FIN) scored sole 7/9 to finish third. Only Emerik remained undefeated among the top three. The top three prizes were SEK 7000 + trophy, 5000 and 3000 along with a medal each. The eight-day nine-round tournament was organized by FT NA Saadah Ahmad and Jordanian Swedish Chess Academy at Quality Hotel Match in Jönköping, Sweden from 25th July to 1st August 2024 This was Srinath's fourth overall, third individual rating tournament triumph of the year. GM Diptayan Ghosh (RSPB) brought an end to GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly's (PSPB) unbeaten streak in Round 8 of 61st National Championship 2024. Both players tried their best to squeeze a win, yet neither budged to slip for a moment. Hence the game ended in a draw. Two of the strongest IMs of the country - Himal Gusain (RSPB) and Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) held GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) and GM Karthik Venkataraman (AP) to a draw each respectively. IM Ajay Karthikeyan (TN) outplayed GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB). GM Neelotpal Das (PSPB) missed a win against GM Mitrabha Guha (RSPB). GM Sriram Jha (LIC) and IM-elect FM Arjun Adireddy (TEL) scored nice wins over GM Visakh N R (RSPB) and GM Sayantan Das (RSPB). Surya is still a full point ahead 7.5/8. "The Gift of Chess" is a non-profit organization whose aim is to distribute 1 million chess sets across the world by 2030. Chess, according to them, has the power to bring about transformation. And so why not begin with a chess set! They have already begun their work in right earnest in more than 25 countries. And now they would like to begin their work of distribution of the chess sets in India. This they would like to do in collaboration with ChessBase India. Sinquefield Cup R5: Praggnanandhaa squanders a win against So

Few things are not going well for R Praggnanandhaa at Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024. He is having trouble converting his winning advantages into a win. He missed a plethora of winning chances against Wesley So (USA) in Round 5. The world no.12 got a better position early in the middlegame. However, he missed all his chances and So survived by the skin of his teeth. Anish Giri (NED) made a tactical error in a seemingly equal rook, knight and bishop endgame. It cost him three pawns in quick succession and Alireza Firouzja (FRA) walked away with a win. He has now gained sole lead 3.5/5. D Gukesh had a well fought draw against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) drew with GM Raunak Sadhwani to maintain his lead going into the last round of 30th Abu Dhabi Masters 2024. GM Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) halted Brazil no.1, GM Luis Paulo Supi's winning streak. GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored a fantastic win over compatriot GM S L Narayanan. GM David Paravyan scored a win over GM Volodar Murzin. Four players - Yakubboev, Vokhidov, Paravyan and Leon are the leaders 6.5/8 each. Raunak, GM Pranav V and GM Aravindh Chithambaram are trailing by a half point at 6/8 each. Leon will face Yakubboev for the battle of first place. FIDE Tbilisi GP 2024 is poised for an exciting finish. IM Alina Kashinskaya (POL) defeated IM Lela Javakhishvili (GEO) to join the lead with IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ). Both are at 5/8 each. Bibisara had her chances against IM Stavroula Tsolakidou (GRE). However, the Greece no.1 woman managed to draw in a complex battle. The highest rated player in the field, GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) scored her first win of the tournament. She defeated IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP) after she ignored her back rank issues. GM Vaishali R defeated the in-form GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO). 61st National Championship R7: Surya Sekhar Ganguly wins seven in-a-row, stretches his lead by a full point

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB) is wrecking through the competition at 61st National Championship 2024 like it is the 2000s. He is the only Indian to have won the then National 'A' for six consecutive years from 2003 to 2008, long before even ChessBase India existed. His seven consecutive win clearly indicates his intention to for the seventh one and qualify to the World Cup. GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB) had a hard-fought draw against IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB). Although the former should have won but it was certainly not easy to spot. Five players are trailing the leader at 6/7 each. Sinquefield Cup R4: Gukesh draws a thriller against Firouzja

Wesley So (USA) defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi to join the lead with Alireza Firouzja (FRA) at the conclusion of Round 4 at Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024. Nepomniachtchi made a few inaccuracies in a rook and few pawns, relatively balanced endgame. It reduced his chances for a draw and eventually lost the game. The most exciting game of the round was played between D Gukesh and Firouzja. The world championship challenger made an interesting exchange sacrifice to make things interesting.
