Sinquefield Cup R1: Ding Liren forces a draw against Gukesh

The first round of Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024 witnessed the highly anticipated match between Ding Liren (CHN) and D Gukesh. The world champion forced a draw via perpetual check by sacrificing his bishop and rook. The world championship challenger had no choice but to accept it. Ding mentioned that he wanted to surprise his opponent in the opening and also save his preparation. The defending champion, Fabiano Caruana (USA) suffered a shocking loss against the newly crowned Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz 2024 winner, Alireza Firouzja (FRA). 61st National Championship R3: Siddhant Gawai plays superb against Mr. Commonwealth

Siddhant Gawai (MAH) played fantastic against GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) in Round 3 of 61st National Championship 2024. The teenager drew with the five-time Commonwealth champion. However, the quality of play was very high by Siddhant. WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP) also put up a good fight against the top seed, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB). She missed her chances in the rook endgame to score a half point. A total of 24 players are current having a perfect score 3/3. The defending champion, Fabiano Caruana (USA) will be seen in action along with Ian Nepomniachtchi, D Gukesh, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), Alireza Firouzja (FRA), Wesley So (USA), R Praggnanandhaa, Anish Giri (NED), Ding Liren (CHN), and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). Gukesh will face the reigning world champion - Ding Liren in the very first round. What will be the outcome of this game? 13-year-old IM-elect FM Goutham Krishna H defeated GM Nikolas Theodorou (GRE) in Round 3 of 30th Abu Dhabi Masters 2024. The Greece no.1 made a minute positional mistake which the teenager had no trouble capitalizing. IM Srihari L R played fantastic chess against the top seed, GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) to share the point. GM Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) and GM Volodar Murzin are the only two players at 3/3 each. They are followed by 36 players including 15 Indians at 2.5/3. 17-year-old untitled Kushal R Jani is having a fantastic tournament. The top ten seeds have made a perfect start at 61st National Championship 2024. They all have won their respective games. Rishideep Bordoloi (ASM) and CM Shadhursshaan R (TN) drew with GM Neelotpal Das (PSPB) and GM Laxman R R (RSPB) respectively. 13-year-old Abhinav Raj (DEL) put up a good fight against GM Pa Iniyan (TN). The teenager made an incorrect decision in a balanced rook and bishop endgame which cost him the game. Dinesh Kumar Jaganathan (TN), Sumit Grover (JK) and Aarav Saish Amonkar (KAR) drew with IM Ajay Karthikeyan (TN), IM Sammed Shete (MAH) and IM Rahul Sangma (RSPB) respectively. Tbilisi GP Round 4: Anna misses, Sara blunders

GM R Vaishali had a solid draw against IM Lela Javakhishvili (GEO) in Round 4 of FIDE Tbilisi GP 2024. GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) handed IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP) her second consecutive loss of the event. Sara blundered in an equal queen, rook and bishop endgame. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) was winning the better part of the endgame against GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO). The Georgia no.1 woman, made an interesting bishop sacrifice to expose Anna's king and grab a couple of pawns. However, Anna defended correctly to gain decisive advantage, only to miss her chances at the end. Vaishali will face GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) in Round 5. Harikrishnan dominates Pays de Charleroi Classical and Blitz Rating Open for the second consecutive year

IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 21st Pays de Charleroi Open Group A (>=2000) 2024. He bettered his previous year's performance by scoring a half point more, finished a full point ahead of the rest. IM FT Muthaiah Al scored sole 7/9 to secure second place for the second consecutive year. He also remained undefeated. GM Namig Guliyev (AZE) scored 6.5/9 to finish third. Harikrishnan defeated both participating GMs in the Classical event - the eventual second runner-up, GM Namig and GM Alexandre Dgebuadze (BEL) en route his championship. Thanneermalai Kannappan wins 48th Sitges Open B 2024, Vihaan Dawda second and Midilesh third

Thanneermalai Kannappan (HKG) scored 8/9 to win 48th Sant Marti Vila de Sitges Open Group B (<1950) 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Vihaan Dawda and Midilesh Ms scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Vihaan defeated the eventual champion, Thanneermalai in the final round to finish second. The total prize fund of the tournament was €7500. The top three prizes in Group B were €450 + trophy, €275 and €200 each. Aarush Dolas was the only other Indian to make a top ten finish in Group B. 61st National Championship R1: Smooth start for the top seeds

The 61st National Chess Championship 2024 started smoothly for the top seeds. There was no major upset for a change. A few minor ones were - Richard Solomon M (TN) held India's second highest rated IM Himal Gusain (RSPB) to a draw. The other one is Abhinav Anand (KAR) held former National Challenger champion, IM Ravi Teja S (AP) to a draw. Neemay Bhanushali (MAH) defeated WGM Swati Ghate (LIC). All GMs and IMs won their respective first round matches. The total prize fund of the tournament is same as last year ₹3000000. Tbilisi GP Round 3: Vaishali crushes Sara

GM R Vaishali scored her first win of the event in Round 3 of FIDE Tbilisi GP 2024. Vaishali crushed her opponent IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP). The IM got a cramped position out of the opening after choosing an inferior line in the Two-Knights' Defence. She only made things worse in the middlegame, allowing Vaishali to positionally outplay her opponent. GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO) missed her second consecutive chance to push for a win. This time against IM Alina Kashlinskaya (POL). IM Stavroula Tsolakidou (GRE) and IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) are the only two woman at 2/3. They are followed closely by seven women at 1.5/3. Subhayan Kundu wins DINI GM International Open 2024

Five players - Subhayan Kundu, GM Peng Li Min (SUI), GM Stupak Kirill, GM Boris Savchenko and GM Deepan Chakkravarthy J scored 7.5/10 at DINI GM International Open 2024. Subhayan won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining four were placed second to fifth respectively. Top four remained undefeated. Subhayan also scored his final IM-norm and he is now 1 Elo rating point away from becoming India's next International Master. The total prize fund of the tournament was LKR 6000000 (Over US$ 20000). The top three prizes were LKR 900000, 720000 and 540000 along with a trophy and medal each respectively. This was Subhayan's third tournament triumph of the year. GM Diptayan Ghosh, IM Hari Madhavan N B, GM Mitrabha Guha and GM Sayantan Das are the remaining Indians to make a top ten finish. The six-time consecutive National Senior champion, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly is the top seed of 61st National Chess Championship 2024. The former Asian and five-time Commonwealth champion, GM Abhijeet Gupta is a rating twin of Surya. The defending champion, GM Sethuraman S P is the third seed. The reigning National Rapid and Blitz champion, GM Diptayan Ghosh has the rare opportunity to become India's second triple crown champion in history. The winner of 59th edition, GM Karthik Venkataraman will also be seen in action. The reigning Commonwealth champion, GM Mitrabha Guha and India's highest rated IM Aronyak Ghosh will also battle for the coveted title and earn a spot at the next edition of World Cup. 13-year-old IM-elect FM Goutham Krishna H held the legend - GM Vasyl Ivanchuk (UKR) to a draw in Round 2 of 30th Abu Dhabi Masters 2024. Five Indians out of 18 players are currently at 2/2. They are - IM Srihari L R, IM Muthaiah Al, IM Harikrishnan A Ra, GM Pranav V and GM-elect IM Rathanvel V S. IM Ayush Sharma drew with GM Leon Luke Mendonca. IM Ameya Audi missed a win against GM Nikolas Theodorou (GRE). IM Harsh Suresh shaed the point with GM Pranav Anand. FM Harshit Pawar held the reigning World Junior Girls champion - IM Divya Deshmukh. Kushal R Jani defended well against the UAE no.1, GM Salem Saleh to share the point. GM R Vaishali got herself a good position against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) in Round 2 of FIDE Tbilisi GP 2024. The former women's world champion provoked a knight sacrifice. Vaishali correctly found it. However, she did not follow through her attack. Instead, she opted for a draw by perpetual check. Another former women's world champion, GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) was in a slight trouble against GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO). The Georgia no.1 could not seize her small window of opportunity and it ended in a draw. Vaishali will face IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP) in the third round.
