Aarav Dengla prevails at 97th Championnat du Grand Paris Masters 2024, Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi second

14-year-old Aarav Dengla scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 97th Championnat du Grand Paris Masters 2024. The teenager finished a full point ahead of the field. Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi scored an unbeaten 6/9 to secure second place. He also earned his second IM-norm in the process. GM Andrei Shchekachev (FRA) finished third scoring 5.5/9. Aarav drew with both runners-up, while Aakash defeated Andrei in the final round. The first prize was €2500 + trophy. The tournament was organized by Ligue IdF des Echecs at Lycee Blanche de Castille in Villemomble, France from 7th to 14th July 2024. Aarav earned his first and third IM-norms at the very same event in 2022 and 2023. Vinodh Kumar Balaguru scored 6.5/9 to finish second in Open A. Photo: Official site

Rinat Jumabayev wins 57th Biel Festival MTO, Leon Luke Mendonca second and Ayush Sharma third

GM Leon Luke Mendonca and IM Ayush Sharma made a quick 17-move draw in the final round of 57th Biel Chess Festival MTO. Thus allowing the Kazakhstan no.1, GM Rinat Jumabayev to catch up. Rinat defeated IM Alexis Tahay (FRA) to become the champion on tie-breaks. Leon finished and Ayush third. IM Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB) also scored 7.5/10. He was placed fourth. GM Krishnan Sasikiran and GM Aryan Chopra are the only two other Indians to make a top ten finish. They scored 7/10 each to secure fifth and sixth place. In GMT Masters, R Praggnanandhaa defeated Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) in the final round to finish third with 24.5 points. The total prize fund in GMT Masters was CHF 28500. The most important step you will ever take is the very first step. Who knew that just one session on chess tournament organizing can sow the seed of a chess movement in the city of Hyderabad. This is the story of how the 1st ChessBase India Chess Festival in Hyderabad came to life in just fifteen days! Check out the tournament standings in this report. In this article, we share with you the story of organizing a Blitz Chess tournament and a problem solving competition in Hyderabad, celebrating the International Chess day on 20th July. Our heartfelt thanks to all those who supported us to make this tournament appear into reality!

Jaroslav Bures victorious at Znojemská Rotunda Open 2024, Sanket Chakravarty second

Top seed of the tournament, IM Jaroslav Bureš (CZE) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win Znojemská Rotunda Rating Open A 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Sanket Chakravarty scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. IM Neklan Vaskočil (CZE) was placed third scoring 6/9. GM Manik Mikulas (SVK) won the Blitz Open C 10/11. Sanket secured second place again, scoring 9.5/11. Jarsolav finished third 9/11. The total financial prize fund of Open A was 75000 CZK. The top three prizes were 15000, 10000 and 8000 CZK along with a trophy and medal each. The total financial prize fund of Blitz Open C was 6400 CZK. The top three prizes were 2000, 1400 and 1000 CZK along with a material prize each. 57th Biel Festival MTO R9: Ayush Sharma stuns Sasikiran, joins the lead with Leon

IM Ayush Sharma outplayed GM Krishnan Sasikiran in Round 9 of 57th Biel Chess Festival MTO. The teenager capitalized his opportunity when the legend made a minute positional mistake. There was an opportunity for the 'Indian wall' to get back and draw the game. However, it was not easy to spot. Ayush also earned his second GM-norm and joined the lead with GM Leon Luke Mendonca. They will inevitably clash in the final round to determine the winner. GM Liem Quang Le (VIE) defeated GM R Praggnanandhaa to win GMT Masters for the third consecutive year. New Guinness World Record in Chess

On International Chess Day, 20th July 2024, FIDE planned a monumental event to celebrate 100 years since it was founded. The attempt was to create the most number of games played in 24 hours on the very same day to set a new Guinness World Record. Players, organizers, arbiters, federations and associations all over the world ensured and contributed to this record. There were a few conditions - the tournament has to be registered beforehand, minimum time control was 3 minutes + 2 seconds and more. We contributed by organizing three tournaments - a Rapid rating in Mumbai, a Blitz rating Open in Bhopal and an open tournament in Hyderabad. Check out the results in a FIDE press release. Soham Bhattacharyya clear first at Silver Lake Open 2024

Top seed Soham Bhattacharyya scored 7/9 to win Silver Lake Open A 2024. Soham finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Onno Elgersma (NED) and WFM Erdenebayar Khuslen (MGL) scored 6.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively. Soham drew with the eventual runner-up Onno in Round 7 and defeated the second runner-up, Erdenebayar in the first round. The total prize fund was RSD 507000. The top three prizes were RSD 150000 + trophy, 90000 and 65000 each. The tournament was organized by Мunicipality Veliko Gradište and Chess Club VGSK at Sport Hall Srebrno Jezero, Silver lake in Serbia from 23rd to 30th June 2024. This was Soham's was first ever individual rating tournament triumph.

Arjun Erigaisi convincingly clinches Crunchlabs Masters 2024 Division III

Arjun Erigaisi won Crunchlabs Masters Division III part of Champions Chess Tour. The World no.4 won the division without losing a single match. In the Semifinals and Finals, he defeated GM Evgeny Alekseev (ISR) to become the champion. Things were not easy for Arjun. He had a rocky start to say the least. In the Play-In event, he scored 5.5/7 and then lost the last two rounds. Thus, missing out the opportunity to battle in Division I. In Division Play, GM Abhimanyu Puranik made a 2-0 clean sweep, so Arjun did not qualify for Division II either. Afterwards, he got back his rhythm and won Division III convincingly. 57th Biel Festival MTO R8: Aryan misses against Sasikiran, Leon stays ahead

GM Leon Luke Mendonca drew with GM Arseniy Nesterov in the eighth round of 57th Biel Chess Festival MTO 2024 to stay ahead with a score 6.5/8. GM Aryan Chopra missed a good winning chance against GM Krishnan Sasikiran. IM Ayush Sharma capitalized on his opportunity when his opponent - GM Harsha Bharathakoti made a tactical error. Ayush joined Sasikiran, Aryan and four more players in pursuit of the top spot. They are at 6/8 each. GM Salem Saleh (UAE) defeated GM R Vaishali to win the GMT Challengers. GM R Praggnanandhaa drew his game against GM Haik Martirosyan (ARM). He is in a virtual must-win situation to keep first place chances. Saranya Devi Narahari wins the 1st ChessBase India Chess Festival in Hyderabad

Girl power shines in Hyderabad as 12-year-old Saranya Devi Narahari clinches the 1st ChessBase India Chess Festival held at the Sarath City Capital Mall in Hyderabad. On the occasion of FIDE's 100th birthday this chess festival was organized as a part of the Guinness world record attempt. On the 20th of July on International Chess Day, more than 100 players were a part of the event while 100s of people gathered around to witness this one of a kind event. Read the full report for a detailed account of the tournament. Team lineups announced for record-breaking 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest

The 45th FIDE Olympiad is less than 50 days away. It will take place in Budapest, Hungary from 10th to 22nd September 2024. Eight of the World Top ten including Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana will be seen in action. However, among Women, only one out of the World top ten have confirmed her participation. The Indian teams will be: Open - GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM D Gukesh, GM R Praggnanandhaa, GM Vidit Gujrathi and GM Pentala Harikrishna. Women - GM Harika Dronavalli, GM R Vaishali, IM Divya Deshmukh, IM Vantika Agrawal and IM Tania Sachdev. USA will be the top seed in Open and Georgia in Women. Photo: FIDE

Jakub Luberanski wins Polonia Wroclaw Cup 2024, Harshal Patil third

FM Jakub Luberanski (POL), WFM Irena Hertlein (POL) and Harshal Patil scored 5.5/5 each at Wroclaw Polonia Cup 2024. Jakub won the tournament due to better tie-break score. He also remained undefeated. Irena and Harshal were placed second and third respectively. The top three finishers did not face each other. The total prize fund was 3400 PLN + material prizes. The top three prizes were 1200, 900 and 700 PLN each. The tournament was organized by Polonia Wrocław Chess Club Foundation at Polonia Chess Club in Wrocław, Poland from 5th to 7th July 2024. GM Arseniy Nesterov and GM Krishnan Sasikiran joined Aryan in pursuit as they defeated Tong Xiao (CHN) and IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) respectively. Vihaan Dawda dominates 46th Barbera del Valles Open B 2024

14-year-old Vihaan Dawda scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win XLVI Barbera del Valles Open B (<2099) 2024. The teenager finished a half point ahead of the field. Alfons Macaya Ruiz (CAT) scored 7.5/9 to finish second. Josep Sort Sererols (CAT) secured third place 7/9. GM Yuri Solodovnichenko (UKR) won the Open A (>1950) scoring 7.5/9. IM Michel Alejandro Diaz Perez (CUB) and IM Kaustuv Kundu scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively. The top three prizes in Open A were €1200, €1000 and €800 each, in Open B they were €400, €300 and €250 each. CM Barath Kalyan is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish in Open A.
