World Junior 2024 R6: Divya Deshmukh emerges sole leader

IM Divya Deshmukh defeated her coleader WIM Ayan Allahverdiyeva (AZE) to gain sole lead 5.5/6 at FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. WFM Sachi Jain salvaged a half point from a losing endgame against WIM Martyna Wikar (POL). Kashthuri Bhai R forced a threefold repetition as her opponent WIM Xeniya Balabayeva's (KAZ) queen got trapped. WGM Rakshitta Ravi won her game and took her score to 4.5/6. In the Open event, GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso (COL) drew his game against GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ) to maintain their lead 5/6. IM Rudik Makarian and IM L M S T De Silva (SRI) joined them to make it a four-way 5/6. Today is the sole rest day of the tournament. Round 7 starts tomorrow Sunday 9th June from 3 p.m. IST. Magnus Carlsen is the clear winner of 12th Norway Chess, Praggnanandhaa third

"Hello India, I am Magnus Carlsen. I am going to win Norway Chess." - Magnus Carlsen (NOR) said this before the start of 12th Norway Chess 2024. He made his prediction come true. Yes of course he is undoubtedly that good. For the sixth time the World no.1 won this iconic tournament in his home country. His previous wins were - 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021. In the final round, he drew the Classical game against Fabiano Caruana (USA). He won Armageddon to become a clear champion 17.5/30. Wenjun Ju wins the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024

Wenjun Ju (CHN) defeated Tingjie Lei (CHN) in the final round to win the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024 with a score 19/30. However, more than the result, how it happened was surprising. Tingjie did not lose a single Classical game until Round 10. Even the commentators mentioned that she put up almost little resistance in the battle against the reigning Women's World Champion. Perhaps the cerebral effect of losing the World Championship Match last year. Who knows? Anna Muzychuk (UKR) crushed Koneru Humpy in Armageddon to become a clear second 16/30. Romanian Chess Federation invites you to play at Romania Grand Prix 2024

Romanian Chess Federation started Romania Grand Prix in 2022 with the objective of providing young Romanian players to play in strong tournaments in their home country. The federation has made great efforts to make Romania as the new European Chess Capital. The total prize fund in the entire GP 2024 is €175000, €30000 for each of thefive Grand Prix events and €25000 for the Finals. GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) won the first leg in Bucharest on 24th March. There are still four more legs left. The second leg will be held at Cluj-Napoca on 13th and 14th June. A total of 290 players including 20 GMs, 11 IMs and 3 WGMs have registered from 16 countries across the world. That's not all, you will get to play in the same arena as Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi. World Junior 2024 R5: Divya destroys Narmin, joins the lead with Ayan

IM Divya Deshmukh defeated previous round sole leader Narmin Abdinova (AZE) in Round 5 of FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. The top seed hunted her king successfully and checkmated her on 28th move. WIM Ayan Allahverdiyeva (AZE) won against WIM Sofiia Hryzlova (SUI) to join Divya in the lead 4.5/5. They are closely followed by eleven girls including four Indians - WFM Rindhiya V, Kashthuri Bhai R, WFM Sachi Jain and Mrittika Mallick at 4/5 each. In the Open event, IM Mayank Chakraborty held the sole leader, GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso (COL) to an exciting draw in the Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence. Vaishali suffered her third Classical game loss at Norway Chess Women 2024. It was against Tingjie Lei (CHN) in the penultimate round. Wenjun Ju (CHN) defeated Koneru Humpy in Armageddon. The latter made some irrevocable mistakes in the middlegame and had to pay a heavy price for it. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) made the fastest draw of the day against Pia Cramling (SWE). However, the legend Pia made a one-move queen blunder in Armageddon which allowed Anna to win the game and match. 12th Norway Chess R9: Ding Liren massacres Hikaru Nakamura in Armageddon

For the second consecutive round, all games of the penultimate round of 12th Norway Chess 2024 were decided in Armageddon. Not only the games were decided in Armageddon but also had clear victors means there was no decision based on clock or a draw by black. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) missed his opportunity to win against Magnus Carlsen (NOR) in Armageddon. The world champion, Ding Liren (CHN) completely decimated Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in Armageddon. Aronyak Ghosh convincingly clinches 12th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Aronyak Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 12th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2024 part of LBHM Chess Festival 2024. Aronyak finished a half point ahead of the rest. Seven players - FM Suyog Wagh, CM Snehal Bhosale, IM Abhishek Kelkar, Arvind Iyer, GM P Karthikeyan, GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury and IM Neelash Saha scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to eighth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the entire festival was ₹3024234, for Rapid Rating tournament it was ₹401001. The top three prizes were ₹51001, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Aronyak's third rating tournament triumph of the year.

Aakash and Vaishnavi are Tamil Nadu State Under-15 Open and Girls 2024 Champions

Aakash G and Vaishnavi S K became Tamil Nadu State Under-15 Open and Girls 2024 Champions. Both of them scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each and finished a half point ahead of the rest. S Haridev and Ananya Raman scored 8/9 each, remained undefeated and secure runner-up in Open and Girls tournaments respectively. Arul Prakash N and Nivedita V C secured third place in their categories scoring 7.5/9 each. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹60000, ₹30000 for each event. The top three prizes were ₹7000 + trophy, ₹5000 and ₹3500 each. The five-day rating tournament was organized by Pudukottai District Chess Association at Chendhuran College of Engineering and Technology in Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu from 15th to 19th May 2024. Vidit Gujrathi set to face world's best at Uzchess Cup Masters 2024 starting today

World no.24 and India no.5 Vidit Gujrathi will play his first tournament after FIDE Candidates 2024 at Uzchess Cup Masters 2024. He will be the sole Indian in the strong lineup comprising - Alexander Grischuk, Yangyi Yu (CHN), Richard Rapport (ROU), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE), Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB), Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) and Alexey Sarana (SRB). Abhijeet Gupta will be taking part in the Challengers section. The tournament will take place from 5th to 15th June at Tashkent, Uzbekistan. GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso (COL) and Narmin Abdinova (AZE) have emerged sole leaders at FIDE World Junior 2024 Open and Girls. They are the only two players with a perfect score 4/4 after Round 4. IM Mayank Chakraborty missed a small window of opportunity to go for a win against GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ). The game ended in a draw. IM Ilamparthi A R scored another great win against FM Simon Rybka (SVK). Both Mayank and Ilamparthi are at 3.5/4 each. The Asian Junior 2023 Silver medalist, IM Aswath S handed the top seed, GM Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) his second loss of the event. Neelash Saha wins a double for the second consecutive year at LBHM Chess Festival 2024

IM Neelash Saha, GM Diptayan Ghosh, IM Aronyak Ghosh and IM Ratnakaran K scored 8/9 each at 10th LBHM Rating Open 2024 part of Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial LBHM Chess Festival 2024. Neelash won the tournament due to better tie-break score. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Neelash drew against both runners-up, Diptayan an Aronyak in ninth and seventh round respectively. The total prize fund of the entire festival was ₹3024234, for Classical Rating tournament it was ₹1299111. The top three prizes were ₹150000, ₹100111 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. Neelash also won the 13th LBHM Blitz Rating Open 2024. Both him and Aronyak scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each. They secured top two places. IM Ratnakaran K scored 8/9 to secure third place. These are Neelash's fifth and sixth tournament triumph of the year, five of them were rated.

World Junior 2024 R3: Mayank Chakraborty pumells Pranav Anand, scores a hat-trick

IM Mayank Chakraborty defeated the highest rated Indian in the field, GM Pranav Anand in Round 3 of FIDE World Junior 2024 Open. The former World Under-16 Open champion, Pranav misjudged the propensity of Mayank's attack on his kingside. IM Ayush Sharma displayed his creative and aggressive style to upstage GM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux (CAN). IM Ilamparthi A R quite possibly played the most exciting game of the round. His devastating attack rendered his opponent, FM Zhangir Bizhigitov's (KAZ) two queens ineffective. Harshit Pawar continues his great run by moving his score to 2.5/3. In the Girls section, top seed IM Divya Deshmukh outplayed WIM Tejaswini G. WFM Rindhiya V showed staunch defense and eventually won against WIM Martyna Wikar (POL). Norway Chess Women 2024 R8: Vaishali wins Armageddon against Anna, Wenjun leaps to the top

Anna Muzychuk (UKR) drew against Vaishali in the Classical game of Round 8 at Norway Chess Women 2024. Vaishali mentioned in the Confession booth that she went all out in Jobava London as she suffered two consecutive Classical losses before this. Vaishali won the back and forth Armageddon on time. The position on the board was equal in a double rook endgame. Reigning Women's World Champion, Wenjun Ju (CHN) scored three points as she defeated Pia Cramling (SWE) in the Classical. Wenjun is the new sole leader 14.5/24, closely followed by Anna 13/24 and then Vaishali 11.5/24. Tingjie Lei (CHN) scored her first Classical victory of the event against Koneru Humpy.
