45th Chess Olympiad R4: Gukesh channels Magnus, Ukraine and Vietnam upset USA and Uzbekistan

Indian teams continue their winning streak at 45th Chess Olympiad 2024. Both men and women team registered their fourth win in Open and Women section. Serbia went down India by 0.5-3.5. D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi showed their expertise in the endgame against Alexandr Predke and Velimir Ivic respectively. Gukesh channeled the endgame expert Magnus Carlsen in his game. Arjun Erigaisi once again showed his sharp play to score a win against Aleksandar Indjic. Among the Women, India defeated France 3.5-0.5. GM Harika Dronavalli and IM Tania Sachdev scored with ease against IM Deimante Daulyte-Cornette and WIM Natacha Benmesbah respectvely. IM Divya Deshmukh defeated WGM Mitra Hejazipour in a rollercoaster battle which could have ended either way. Indian men will face Azerbaijan and women Kazakhstan in Round 5. JDCA invites you to 2nd Jaffna International Chess Championship 2024 in Sri Lanka

Jaffna District Chess Association invites you to 2nd Jaffna International Chess Championship 2024. The second edition is offering a first prize of LKR 200000 and a total prize fund of LKR 2.4 Million. A total of 150 individual prizes are up for grabs. Entry is FREE for GM, IM, WGM, WIM, FM, WFMs and players rated above 2000. Travel grant is offered to GM, IM, WGM, WIMs. Apart from a Classical tournament, there is a Blitz tournament on 1st December 2024. The winner of the inauguration edition last year was IM Anup Deshmukh. Indian players have gotten a lot of success at various tournaments in all over Sri Lanka since last year. 45th Chess Olympiad R3: Arjun Erigaisi annihilates Peter Prohaszka

Indian teams scored hat-trick of wins at 45th Chess Olympiad 2024. The men's team defeated Hungary B in the Open section by 3.5-0.5. All three victors - GM D Gukesh, GM R Praggnanandhaa and GM Arjun Erigaisi scored contrasting victories. Gukesh outplayed his opponent positionally, Praggnanandhaa played a solid game and Arjun smashed his opponent with a brilliant attack. GM Vidit Gujrathi had to concede a draw when his opponent GM Gabor Papp forced a repetition. Switzerland went down to Indian women's team 1-3. Only GM Harika Dronavalli suffered a loss against the former Women's world champion, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk. The remaining three - GM R Vaishali, IM Divya Deshmukh and IM Vantika Agrawal scored convincing wins. The 45th Chess Olympiad started with a bang in Budapest. There is so much excitement among the players to compete against the best teams in the world. A total of 380 teams and 1736 players are taking part from 194 (Open) and 180 (Women) countries across the world. It would be interesting to see how each team gives their best to fight against the best. The venue would be full of thousands of people meaning there would be thousands of interesting moments to capture. That’s why, we will bring you a closer look at some of the most captivating moments from the venue. Read the article to see some of those from Day 1.

Sriram Adarsh Uppala superb at 25th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2024

Sriram Adarsh Uppala scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 25th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2024. He also earned his maiden IM-norm in the process. The teenager performed at 2494, gained a whopping 138 Elo rating points and finished a full point ahead of others. IM Alexander Slizhevsky and IM David Gochelashvili scored 6/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were - US$ 500, $300 and $200 each. The seven-day ten-player round-robin tournament was organized by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association at Hotel Le Palace in Chennai, Tamil Nadu from 22nd to 28th August 2024. Indian teams continue to score wins at 45th Chess Olympiad 2024. The men's team in the Open section scored another 0-4 whitewash win, this time against Iceland. GM D Gukesh played his first game of the event and won convincingly. The remaining three, GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Vidit Gujrathi and GM Pentala Harkrishna also scored emphatic victories. Harikrishna's win was the most memorable one as played a spectacular move 46.Rc7! In the Women's event, India defeated Czech Republic 3.5-0.5. IM Tania Sachdev is the only one to concede a draw against WIM Martina Korenova. Indian men will face Hungary B and Women will be up against Switzerland in Round 3. The HelpChess Fundraiser during 45th Chess Olympiad 2024

ChessBase India established the Help Chess Foundation on 21st June 2018. It is an 80G registered Charitable Trust formed to help Indian chess players financially. Till today, we have raised more than Rs. 1 crore with the help of 4000+ contributors. With these funds, we have supported more than 50 chess players. Many players have scored their IM and GM norms after Help Chess support. Every year, our goal is to support more players than the previous year. During the World Cup 2023, we raised around Rs. 12,58,827.55. This year, we raised Rs. 10,26,577.13 during the 45th Chess Olympiad. Read the article to know more. Hari Ganesh clinches Adyar Times Rating Open for the second consecutive year

16-year-old Hari Ganesh T scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win 22nd Adyar Times Rating Open 2024. The teenager won the tournament for the second year in-a-row, scoring the exact same points. This time he finished a half point ahead of the rest. Four players - Vakeesh S, Ajjesh J R, Dhanush Ragav N S and Ram Kumar G M scored 7/8 each. They secured second to fifth place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. The top three prizes were ₹35000 + trophy, ₹25000 and ₹15000 each respectively. Indian teams are off to a smooth start at 45th Chess Olympiad 2024. The men's team in the Open section scored a 4-0 whitewash over Morocco. All four players - GM R Praggnanandhaa, GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Vidit Gujrathi and GM Pentala Harikrishna scored comfortable wins. In the Women's event, Jamaica lost to the top seed, India by 0.5-3.5. IM Tania Sachdev scored the smoothest win for the team. GM Vaishali almost allowed her opponent to get back in the final moments. IM Divya Deshmukh had to work to score a full point. Commonwealth 2024: Sethuraman wins Gold, Vignesh N R Silver and India clinches a historic 107 medals

GM Sethuraman S P and GM Vignesh N R scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at Commonwealth Chess Championship 2024 in the Open category. Sethuraman won Gold on tie-breaks, Vignesh had to settle for Silver. Their sixth round battle against each other ended in a draw. WGM Mary Ann Gomes won the Women's event scoring 5.5/9. She also won a Silver medal each in both Rapid and Blitz events. WGM-elect WIM Sakshi Chitlange won Silver in Classical, Bronze in Rapid and Gold in Blitz. IM Soumya Swaminathan claimed Bronze. GM Mitrabha Guha won Gold in the inaugural Rapid event. Silver for GM Pa Iniyan and GM Laxman R R got Bronze. GM Swapnil Dhopade claimed Gold in Blitz. Silver for GM Mitrabha Guha and IM Hari Madhavan N B Bronze. 45th Chess Olympiad: Morocco and Jamaica are the first round opponents for India

The 45th edition of the Chess Olympiad is the biggest Olympiad in the history. A total of 380 teams, 1736 players are taking part from 194 (Open) and 180 (Women) countries across the world. The host nation India is going to have a team each in Open and Women. The second seeded Open team will face Morocco, while the top seed Indian Women will be up against Jamaica. The deadline for team composition is 10 a.m. local time. So we will only get to know who are playing in the first round 1 after 1:30 p.m. IST. Check out lots of photos, videos and interviews from the opening ceremony and day zero. FIDE World Cup 2025 qualification quotas updated

Apart from the medals in Chess Olympiad, it also has World Cup implications. Even though the non-podium finishers may not win a medal, they can still secure a spot for their compatriot in next year's World Cup. In the Open section, only 80 teams will get a spot at the World Cup for their federations. Europe will get 11 less and for Americas, it will be nine less. In the Women's section of the Olympiad, 35 instead of 50 will gain Olympiad spots. The total number of players who can qualify remains unchanged - 206. Africa has three spots, Americas 21, Europe 41 and Asia 35. In the Women's event, Asia will have 20. So far, GM Sethuraman S P and GM Karthik Venkataraman in the Open, IM Padmini Rout in the Women's World Cup 2025 have already secured their respective places. Photo: FIDE
