A celebration of Chess - The Big Chess Summer Camp 2024

It has been 4 days since the Big Chess Summer Camp kicked off in the Phoenix Marketcity Mall, Kurla, Mumbai. The Camp started off on 13th May, and will come to an end on 19th May 2024. This space has been dedicated to the ChessBase India Chess Club sessions since early 2022, A deathmatch, numerous simuls! But the big chess camps held here (3 so far) have always been very close to our heart and the chess community. Close to 350 people have already joined us to learn chess at their own pace with several other like-minded people - completly free of cost! In this article, we try to cover what has happened in these four days - starting from the guests who came in, the amazing people who are a part of it, and some very cool stories. If you are in Mumbai/nearby the city, hopefully this write-up will persuade you to join the camp and discover the fun for yourself!

Abdulla Gadimbayli wins Ljubljana Chess Festival 2024, Harikrishnan A Ra second

GM Abdulla Gadimbayli (AZE) and IM Harikrishnan A Ra scored 7.5/9 each at Ljubljana Chess Festival 2024. Abdualla won the tournament as he won against Harikrishnan in the seventh round. Direct encounter was the first tie-break. Thus, Harikrishnan had to settle for second place. GM Jan Šubelj (SLO), IM Domen Tisaj (SLO) and GM Imre Hera Jr. (HUN) scored 7/9 each. They secured third to fifth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the festival was €13000. The top three prizes were €3000, €2200 and €1500 each. The eight-day nine-round tournament was organized by Tajfun - ŠK Ljubljana, Šahovska Šola Zmajcek and Goldenchess at Hotel Lev in Ljubljana, Slovenia from 27th April to 4th May 2024.

7th Sharjah Masters R3: Sensational Salem flattens Fedoseev

UAE no.1 GM Salem Saleh scored sensational win over GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) in 7th Sharjah Masters 2024 Round 3. Salem played in his usual sharp style and scored a beautiful victory. This game should definitely make into the books. Computer may not understand what Salem and can refute it but only a human mind will appreciate his artistry. GM Hans Niemann (USA) defeated GM Nikolas Theodorou (GRE) to score his third win in-a-row. GM Aravindh Chithambaram almost had the opposite of what Salem did. As his opponent, GM Marcin Krzyzanowski's (POL) attack backfired. Salem and Hans will face each other in Round 4, while Aravindh will be up against GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI). Md. Imran dominates 1st Spark Chess Academy Rating Open 2024

15-year-old Md. Imran scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win 1st Spark Chess Academy Rating Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. 12-year-old Sree Shaunak Chanda scored sole 8.5/10 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Six players scored 8/10. Out of them, another 15-year-old Sri Charan Sandipagu claimed third place according to tie-breaks. He is the only person to snatch a half point from the eventual champion, Imran. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500222. The top three prizes were ₹70000, ₹40000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. The six-day rating tournament was organized by Spark Chess Academy from 25th to 30th April 2024 at Shamrock International School in Kanuru, Vijayawada. Srinath Narayanan triumphs at MLA Chashak Rapid Rating Open 2024

Six players - GM FST Srinath Narayanan, IM Arghyadip Das, GM Sankalp Gupta, Siddhant Gawai, GM Laxman R R and FM Gaurang Bagwe scored 8/9 each at MLA Chashak Rapid Rating Open 2024. Srinath won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. The remaining five were placed second to sixth respectively. His sole loss occurred against the eventual runner-up, Arghyadip. All six of them suffered a defeat each. The only untitled among top six, Siddhant managed to beat two podium finishers - Arghyadip and Sankalp. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹401000. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹35000 and ₹21000 along with a trophy each. The two-day rapid rating tournament was organized by Jai Sai Welfare Foundation Nagpur on 27th and 28th April 2024 at St. Vincent Palloti School in Nagpur, Maharashtra. 7th Sharjah Masters R2: Hans Niemann hunts Jakhongir Vakhidov's king

GM Nikolas Theodorou scored the biggest upset of the second round of 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. The Greece no.2 defeated the top seed GM Arjun Erigaisi with ease after the latter misjudged the intensity of his opponent's attack. Neglecting the proper defense of a key pawn led to his king's demise in the next four moves. GM Aravindh Chithambaram is the sole Indian to have won both of his games. He disposed GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) without much difficulty. GM Sankalp Gupta seized his opportunity when his opponent, GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) blundered in the endgame. GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM Aditya Mittal and Sankalp are at 1.5/2 each. In the Challengers, Kush Devnani won a back and forth battle when GM Hesham Abdelrahman (EGY) blundered a mate in two. GM Bui Vinh loves Chess and Vietnam

Vietnam currently has 13 Grandmasters. One of the GMs, Bui Vinh, decided to use his experience, ambition and passion, develop the next generation of young talents. It led to the formation of his academy - The Future Grandmasters Chess Club in Hanoi in 2014. He realized that despite the sport being popular and well supported one, there was a lack of opportunities for his compatriots to gain ratings and earn title norms. Thus, he started his first GM/IM-norm tournaments in 2022. Check out how a Grandmaster attained the FA and subsequently IA title, created not only more norms and titles for players but also for arbiter. FM Kunal M, Sham R and Vignesh B scored 7/8 each at 1st Vidhya Sagar Rating Open 2024. The top seed of the tournament, Kunal became the champion due to better tie-break scores. Sham and Vignesh were placed second and third respectively. Kunal drew with the eventual runner-up, Sham in the final round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹40000 + trophy, ₹35000 and ₹30000 each. The four-day rating tournament was organized by Sri Ragavendra Chess Academy and Master Mind Chess Academy from 25th to 28th April 2024 at Vidhya Sagar Institution in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu. 7th Sharjah Masters R1: Arjun Erigaisi makes Safarli suffer, now World no.6

Arjun Erigaisi, Aravindh Chithambaram and Iniyan Pa are the three Indians to make a winning start at 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. Arjun scored an emphatic victory over Eltaj Safarli (AZE) to become World no.6 in the live ratings. Aravindh and Iniyan registered victories over Bharath Subramaniyam H and Pouya Idani (IRI); Sethuraman S P, Sankalp Gupta, B Adhiban and Harika Dronavalli drew against Teimour Radjabov (AZE), Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (ARM), Abhimanyu Puranik and Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) respectively. দাবাড়ু (Dabaru) movie inspired by the life of Surya Sekhar Ganguly is out now on theaters

Indian films have a lot of movies based on sports, be it biopic or slightly fictionalized. However, one thing it lacked is a movie based completely around chess. দাবাড়ু (Dabaru) is the first movie in Indian cinema which completely revolves around chess. It is not a biopic of GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly. It is inspired by his life. Since it is the movie about Surya's life, he ensured that the technical aspects of chess is correct as that's the first thing chess players and enthusiasts look for any kind of discrepancy. Samriddhaa Ghosh and Arindam Mukherjee were the Chess Coordinators. They ensured the chess technicalities are correct. Harikrishnan A Ra wins 7th Mimosa Rating Open 2024

IM Harikrishnan A Ra and Niccolo Baldeschi (ITA) scored an unbeaten 4.5/5 each at won 7th Mimosa Open 2024. Harikrishnan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Niccolo secured second place. They both finished a full point ahead of the rest. Pietro Mirri (ITA) was adjudged third scoring 3.5/5. The total prize fund in Open A was €500. The top three prizes were €250 + trophy, €150 and €100 each respectively. The three-day five-round tournament was organized by Mimosa SSD at Washington 33 in Milan, Italy from 24th to 26th April 2024. This is Harikrishna's third rating tournament triumph of the month and overall fifth of the year.

Arjun Erigaisi will be the top seed at Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024

Arjun Erigaisi will make his debut at Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024 in Jermuk, Armenia. He will be the top seed in this Category 17 tournament. Arjun will be seen in action with the defending champion - Samuel Sevian (USA), M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI), Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU), Haik M Martirosyan (ARM), Matthias Bluebaum (GER), Shant Sargsyan (ARM), Volodar Murzin, Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) and Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM). The tournament will take place at Jermuk Ashkarh Health Center in Vayots Dzor, Armenia from 9th to 18th June 2024. The total prize fund of the tournament is 7450000 AMD (≈ US$ 18400). P Shyam Nikhil becomes the 85th Grandmaster of India

IM P Shyam Nikhil became the 85th Indian to achieve the Grandmaster title on Sunday 12th May 2024 at Dubai Police Masters 2024. He drew with GM Jinshi Bai (CHN) in the final round to secure his final GM-norm. Shyam earned his first GM-norm way back in September 2011 at 4th Mumbai Mayor's Cup. In the following month, he scored his second GM-norm at 46th National Premier 2011. Five months later in May 2012 he got a published rating 2502. A few of his norms were missed and got cancelled due to technicality. He had to score his final GM-norm outside of India. 12 years later in Dubai, the same place where he crossed 2500 in 2012, is where he became a Grandmaster.
