Rohan Vijay Shandilya wins 4th Navin Kumar Sinha Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2024

Rohan Vijay Shandilya and Subhabrata Roy scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 4th Navin Kumar Sinha Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2024. Jharkhand's very own Rohan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Subhabrata secured second place. Arpan Das and Sudhir Kumar Sinha scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively. Rohan defeated the eventual second runner-up Arpan in the seventh round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹12000 and ₹7500 along with a trophy each. Entry fee was only ₹500. Rohan is the reigning Jharkhand State champion. The one-day rapid rating tournament was organized by West Singhbhum District Chess Association on 21st January 2024 at St. Xavier's Boys School in Chaibasa, Jharkhand. Srikanth Myakala won 1st Karimnagar Below 1600 Rating Open 2024 with a 100% score 9/9. He finished a staggering one and a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - Mahender Marri, Gowrichander U, Natura Bethi and Sathvik Gulakaram scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. Srikanth defeated the eventual runner-up, Mahender in the penultimate round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. Entry fee was only ₹999. Eltaj Safarli wins 5th Fujairah Endurance Blitz 2024, Raunak Sadhwani second

GM Eltaj Safarli (AZE) and GM Raunak Sadhwani scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 each at 5th Fujairah Endurance Blitz Rating (Above 2000) 2024. Eltaj won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Raunak was placed second. The sixth round battle between them ended in a draw. They both finished a full point ahead of the field. GM Farrukh Amonatov (TJK) scored sole 6.5/9 to secure third place. The total prize fund of the tournament was AED 130000. The top three prizes in Blitz were AED 7000, 6000 and 5000 each respectively. Leon Luke Mendonca was the surprise winner of the Tata Steel Challenger 2024 tournament in Wijk aan Zee. He started with 3 out of 6 points, and was lost in the lower part of the table, until he recovered with 6.5 points out of his last seven games, to reach first place! The Indian Grandmaster and ChessBase Host, Arne Kaehler, started a video series in 2023, on how a typical day in a life of a professional chess player looks like. Tapan Badamundi clinches 1st SOA Category B Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024

Tapan Badamundi scored 8.5/10 to win 1st SOA International GM Chess Festival Category B Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Four players - Sudhanshu Ranjan, Akshat Negi, Kolla Bhaavan and Ashutosh Kumar scored 8/10 each. They were placed second to fifth according to tie-breaks. Ashtutosh Kumar skipped the first two rounds and then scored 8/8 in the eight games he played. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹750000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹50000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each respectively. This was Tapan's first tournament triumph of the year 2024. Budapest gets ready for 45th Chess Olympiad 2024

The 45th edition of FIDE Chess Olympiad will take place in Budapest, Hungary from 10th to 22nd September 2024. The event will take place at BOK Sports Hall. It is Hungary's one of the most modern centers that hosts over 120 events annually and can accommodate up to 10000 people. Chess Olympiads are like a festival which brings players from all walks of life, amateurs, club level players to the world's best. For the first time, in a historic move towards inclusivity, this edition of the Olympiad will welcome a team of refugees, officially approved by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Biswajit Chatterjee dominates 1st Tracks of Strategy Rating Open 2024 with a perfect 8/8

Biswajit Chatterjee scored 8/8 to win 1st Tracks of Strategy Rating Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Shankhadeep Maity scored an unbeaten 7/8 to finish second. Nine players scored 6.5/8. Out of them, the reigning West Bengal State Rapid champion, Niladri Banerjee was placed third according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹139750 + trophies. The top three prizes were ₹10000 + trophy, ₹9000 and ₹8000 each respectively. This was Biswajit's first tournament triumph since December 2019. Entry fee was only ₹600. 2nd Bijnor Open Classical FIDE Rated Chess tournament starts from 17th March

It is said that if you want to grow chess anywhere, then you should organize good tournaments regularly. Keeping this in mind, after the first edition of UP Booster Series "Bijnor Open Classical FIDE Rated Tournament" which was successfully conducted in December 2023, is now back with it's second edition - which will be played from 17th to 21st March 2024. The event will be held at the prestigious Vivek College at Bijnor. The total prize fund will be Rs 5 lakh, in which the first prize has been kept at Rs 1 lakh! A total of 60 prizes will be distributed in the competition. This time, the number of rounds in the tournament has been increased to 9. FIDE publishes its rating list at the beginning of each month. February 2024 FIDE Rating list witnesses the highest number of Indians in the World Top 20. D Gukesh's fantastic performance at 86th Tata Steel Masters earned him 17.7 Elo rating points. He moved nine places from World no.25 to 16th. There are now five Indians in World Top 20. R Praggnanandhaa moved up one place to World no.13. Vidit Gujrathi maintained his place at no.14. Among the Women, GM Harika Dronavalli moved to World no.11. IM Divya Deshmukh moved to World no.38. FM Karthik Rajaa scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 13th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition, performed at 2427 to earn his second IM-norm. He also increased his Elo rating by 33.8 points. GM Manik Mikulas (SVK) scored 6.5/9 to secure second place. IM Muhammad Khusenkhojaev (TJK) was placed third 6/9. Lokesh N scored 7/9 to win the 14th edition. 12th National Schools Chess Championship 2024 preview

The 12th edition of National Schools Chess Championship will take place from 6th to 10th February 2024. A total of 913 children have registered in six different age groups - Under-7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17. The tournament is organized by All Bihar Chess Association in association with Bihar State Sports Authority at Gyan Bhavan in Patna, Bihar. The total prize fund is ₹504000. The top three prizes in each category is ₹10000, ₹7000 and ₹6000 each respectively. As many as 14 different champions will be crowned in eight days.
