Karen H Grigoryan wins 5th Yerevan Open 2023, Adhiban second and Abhimanyu Puranik third

GM Karen H Grigoryan (ARM) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 5th Yerevan Open A (≥2100) 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. GM Adhiban B, GM Abhimanyu Puranik and GM Sergei Lobanov scored 7/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Both Karen and Adhiban remained undefeated. The total prize fund of all three tournaments was 15000000 AMD. The top three prizes in Open A were AMD 2600000 + trophy, 1800000 and 1350000 each. There were Chessify prizes (Chessify coins) also worth US$ 3000. The top three prizes were $500, $400 and $300. That's not all. There were 20 Chessmood prizes. Top three won 1 year, 6 months and 3 months memberships. GM Zaven Andriasian (ARM), GM Karthik Venkataraman and GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (ARM) scored 7.5/9 each in the Blitz. Rustum Tolentino dominates Qatar Masters Open B 2023, Shrayan Majumder second

FM Rustum Tolentino (PHI) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Qatar Masters Open B 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Shrayan Majumder scored 7.5/9 to finish second. FM Ammar Sedrani (UAE), FM Djabri Massinas (ALG) and Mandar Lad Pradip scored 7/9 each. They shared third place. Rustum scored eight wins in-a-row and he had a full point lead heading into the final round. Shrayan Majumder was the sole player at 7/8. Their final round battle ended in a draw. Rustum became champion and Shrayan second. The total prize fund of Open B (≤2299) was US$ 11750. The top three prizes were $2500, $2000 and $1000 along with a trophy each. Photos: Aditya Sur Roy

Harshad wins 1st Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023, Srihari L second

FM Harshad S, Srihari L and IM David Gochelashvili scored 6/9 each at 1st Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. Harshad won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Srihari and Gochelashvili were placed second and third respectively. Despite starting with a loss and scoring only 2/4 in the first four games, Harshad regrouped quite well by scoring 4/5 in the last five games. The total prize fund of the tournament was US$ 1000. The first prize was $500. This is Harshad's third overall and second individual rating tournament triumph of the year. Harshad won a Rapid Rating and a Blitz Team event this year. Himal Gusain dominates 1st G H Raisoni Memorial Pune Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st G H Raisoni Memorial Pune Rapid Rating Open 2023. Himal finished a half point ahead of the competition. FM J Ramakrishna and FM Nikhil Dixit scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Himal defeated the eventual runner-up Ramakrishna in the penultimate round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. Piotr Sabuk clinches Nagoya Open 2023

Mayur Gondhalekar and his good friend, Sheldon Donaldson regularly keeps us updated about the Japan chess scene. Sheldon writes a blog about his experience playing at the Nagoya Open 2023. Almost four years ago, India's 21st GM Sriram Jha became the first Indian to win this event. The Canadian origin, currently residing in Japan, Sheldon's article is full of high quality photos and some interesting moments from his games. He enjoys playing, analyzing and making us enjoy various moments from his games. Check out his experience taking part in the tournament which took place in Nagoya, Japan. IM Piotr Sabuk won the tournament scoring an unbeaten 5.5/6. Japan no.2 IM Ryosuke Nanjo secured second place scoring 5/6. Bijnor Open International FIDE Rating tournament kicks off from 30th November

If you have been waiting for a long time to get or increase your Classical FIDE Rating, then a great event is waiting for you at Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. The first tournament of Uttar Pradesh Chess Booster Rating Series “Bijnor Open” will be held from 30th November to 3rd December. Only 200 players can take part in this seven-round tournament. Nodirbek Yakubboev wins Qatar Masters 2023, S L Narayanan third with a 2792 performance

The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalists - Nodirbek Abdussatorov (UZB) and Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) won their final round games against Arjun Erigaisi and Karthikeyan Murali respectively. Thus, they both became the only two players to end up with a score of 7/9 each. Yakubboev beat his countryman Abdusattorov in both 5'+3" Blitz play-off games to become Qatar Masters 2023 champion. Abdusattorov was placed second. S L Narayanan had a good chance against Hikaru Nakamura (USA). However, he was unable to seize it and it ended in a draw. Nevertheless, Narayanan scored an unbeaten 6.5/9 with a performance of 2792. He finished third along with five more players including Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh. Abhimanyu Puranik was on the verge of handing Magnus Carlsen his third defeat of the tournament. IM Vaishali R and IM Srihari L R scored GM-norms. CM Mayank Chakraborty earned his final IM-norm. Akshayakalpa makes entry into Hyderabad Chess scene

Akshayakalpa Organic, a well-known name in the Bangalore chess fraternity, has extended its support and presence to the Hyderabad chess scene. This is a significant step in the expansion and collaboration within the chess community. Hyderabad Chess Centre is organizing the Akshayakalpa Organic 3rd HCC Open Telangana State Chess Tournament. It will take place at Olivemount Global School in Hyderabad, Telangana on the 22nd October. This tournament is expected to be a notable event in the Hyderabad chess calendar. Will Arjun Erigaisi win Qatar Masters 2023?

GM Arjun Erigaisi defeated GM David Paravyan to gain sole lead 6.5/8 going into the final round of Qatar Masters 2023. He will face the 44th Olympiad Gold medalist and World Rapid 2021 champion - GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) in Round 9. A win will make an outright champion, whereas a draw would result in Playoffs among the players who will finish at 7/9. Six players are at 6/8 each. GM Karthikeyan Murali and GM S L Narayanan who drew their game against each other, are the only two Indians among them. GM Abhimanyu Puranik made a clever draw against World no.7 - GM Anish Giri. Jaffna District Chess Association invites you to Jaffna International Chess Championship 2023. The inaugural edition is offering a first prize of LKR 200000 and a total prize fund of LKR 2.4 Million. A total of 150 prizes are up for grabs. Entry is FREE for GM, IM, WGM, WIM, FM, WFMs and players rated above 2000. Travel grant is offered to GM, IM, WGM, WIMs. Foreign players are given various conditions too. This year we have already witnessed five different Indians - GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM Raahul V S, IM Kushagra Mohan, GM Swapnil Dhopade and Indrajeet Mahindrakar win a tournament in Sri Lanka, Kushagra won two. Qatar Masters 2023 R7: Magnus Carlsen crumbles against Karthikeyan Murali

Karthikeyan Murali made the most out of his opportunity against the World no.1. The FIDE World Cup 2023 winner made an unforced error when he decided to give up two of his minor pieces for a rook. The Norwegian never got any compensation for it. Karthikeyan managed to convert his advantage into a full point. This win almost ensures that Carlsen is highly unlikely to defend his Qatar Masters title. After Vishy Anand and Pentala Harikrishna, Karthikeyan became the third Indian to beat Magnus Carlsen in a Classical rated game. With this win, Karthikeyan joins S L Narayanan, Javokhir Sindarov (UZB), Arjun Erigaisi, David Paravyan and Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) in a six-pack lead. Raunak Sadhwani wins FIDE World Junior Rapid 2023 Open, Second in Blitz

GM Raunak Sadhwani scored 8.5/11 to win FIDE World Junior Rapid 2023 Open. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Despite suffering two losses in the first five rounds, the teenager won the next four games, drew the penultimate round against the eventual Silver medalist GM Arseniy Nesterov. He finished with a victory over IM Tobias Koelle (GER) to become a clear champion. GM Nesterov and IM Dimitris Alexakis (GRE) were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) won the Blitz Open event scoring 9.5/11. GM Raunak Sadhwani scored sole 8.5/11 to be placed second. IM Arystan Isanzhulov (KAZ) was placed third. India's 83rd GM Aditya Samant put up a very good fight against the World no.1 GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR). However, an incorrect decision in the endgame cost the teenager the sixth round game at Qatar Masters 2023. The sole leader GM S L Narayanan drew his game against the World Rapid 2021 champion GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). GM Arjun Erigaisi got the better of IM Rudik Makarian. Arjun joined Narayanan, GM Javokhir Sindarov and GM Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) in a four-way lead 5/6. If you are a sports enthusiast, you would be well aware of the phenomenal support that the Odisha Government is providing its athletes. From creating world class infrastructure, to bringing top class trainers, to giving highest cash awards, Odisha is slowly but steadily becoming the sports hub of the country. The good news for chess fans is that the Government has started supporting chess initiatives in the state as well and from that perspective two initiatives have been carried out which we write about in this article - Pro-Chess-Ta, a world class training academy and Chess-O-Disha, a seminar on chess in schools initiative.
