Tejaswini G drew against WIM Mounika Akshaya to clinch the Gold at Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 Girls. She scored an unbeaten 7.5/9, finished a half point ahead of the field, became India's latest Woman International Master and also secured her maiden WGM-norm. WCM Bristy Mukherjee defeated the top seed WIM Nazerke Nurgali (KAZ) to win the Silver medal 7/9. She also finished a half point ahead of the field and earned her maiden WIM-norm. Mounika got the Bronze medal 6.5/9. In the Open section, top seed IM Aleksey Grebnev defeated Alekhya Mukhopadhyay to clinch the Gold 7/9. FM Aswath S won against IM Sambit Panda to secure Silver 7/9 and also became India's latest International Master. FM Ayush Sharma drew against IM S Rohith Krishna. Armageddon Grand Finale 2023: Gukesh beats So 2-0

D Gukesh defeated Wesley So on the first day of Armageddon Championship Series 2023 Grand Finale. The India no.1 convincingly defeated So in both games. Gukesh had never won a rated Blitz game against the former World Fischer Random champion. Last evening, he was determined to change that statistic. Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL) defeated Sam Shankland (USA) 2-0. Gukesh will face Duda on Sunday 17th September. Since it is a double elimination event, So will face Shankland on Saturday 16th September. Chess in Lakecity invites you to 8th N L Pandiyar Memorial Rating Open 2023

The eighth edition of Rajasthan's longest running rating tournament is exactly a month away. Over 300 players including an IM have already registered for it from various parts of the country. From 15th to 19th October 2023, it will take place at Orbit Resort, Udaipur. The first edition took place back in 2009. Kartavya Anadkat won the seventh edition last year. The total prize fund is same as last year ₹1501000. Total number of prizes are 159. Velammal Nexus felicitates Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa with ₹20 lacs cash award each

On Monday 11th September, Velammal Nexus hosted a grand felicitation ceremony to honor the remarkable achievements of their students and coach. GM D Gukesh, GM R Praggnanandhaa, Gold and Bronze medal winning teams at FIDE World School Team Championships 2023, Tennis player - Haritha Sree and Coach Velavan were felicitated. Both Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa received ₹2000000 (US$ 24100+ or €22440) each for becoming India no.1, World no.8 and securing Silver at FIDE World Cup 2023 respectively. Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 R8: Tejaswini G on the verge of winning Gold

Tejaswini G defeated WCM Bristy Mukherjee to emerge sole leader 7/8 heading into the final round of Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 Girls. She is now a full point ahead of the field. WIM Nazerke Nurgali (KAZ), WIM Bommini Mounika Akshaya and Bristy are trailing at 6/8 each. Tejaswini needs a draw against Mounika in the final round to clinch the Gold. IM Aleksey Grebnev, IM S Rohith Krishna, FM Ayush Sharma and FM Aswath S are at 6/8 each. Top three boards ended in draws. Ayush defeated IM Gilbert Elroy Tarigan (INA) to join the lead and put himself in the medal contention. It will be Ayush v Rohith, Grebnev v Alekhya and Aswath v IM Sambit Panda in the final round. Harikrishnan A Ra clinches VHNSN College Rapid Rating Open 2023 with a perfect 9/9

IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored a perfect 9/9 to win Virudhunagar Hindu Nadars' Senthikumara Nadar College Rapid Rating Open 2023. Harikrishnan finished a full point ahead of the competition. Ram S Krishnan scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. FM P Maheshwaran, IM Murali Krishnan B T and P Dharmaraj scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹150000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹16000 and ₹12000 each respectively. This is Harikrishnan's eighth Rating tournament triumph of the year. Tyler Scott wins Chubu Rapid Rating Open 2023, Deeptesh Karmalkar second

Mayur Gondhalekar and his good friend, Sheldon Donaldson regularly keeps us updated about the Japan chess scene. Sheldon writes a blog about his experience playing at the Chubu Rapid Rating Open 2023. It was a FIDE rated event. The Canadian origin, currently residing in Japan, Sheldon's article is full of high quality photos and some interesting moments from his games. He takes a look at his losses too, while making us enjoy various moments from his games. Check out his experience taking part in the tournament which took place in Nagoya, Japan. Tyler Scott, Deeptesh Karmalkar, Show Kitagami and Yuma Okabe all four scored 4/5. They were placed first to fourth according to tie-breaks. Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 R7: Rohith Krishna and Aswath join Grebnev at the top

FM Ayush Sharma held the top seed, IM Aleksey Grebnev to a draw at Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 Open Round 7. IM S Rohith Krishna and Aswath S defeated FM Ritvik Krishnan and IM Gilbert Elroy Tarigan (INA) respectively to join the lead 5.5/7. Both Rohith and Aswath capitalized on their chances in the endgame. Rohith will face Grebnev and Aswath will be up against Manish in the penultimate round. In the Girls section, Tejaswini G won against Mrittika Mallick in a clash of the current National age group champions. WCM Bristy Mukherjee defeated Shubhi Gupta to maintain her lead. Kunal M and Bharath Subramaniyam win GM Chess 1st Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023

Kunal M, WGM Srija Seshadri and IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam scored 8/9 each at GM Chess 1st Rapid Rating Open 2023. Kunal won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Srija and Balasubramaniam were placed second and third. Both Kunal and the eventual second runner-up Balasubramaniam remained undefeated. GM Bharath Subramaniyam H scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win the Blitz Rating Open. He finished a full point ahead of the field. A half dozen players scored 7.5/9. CM Rajarishi Karthi and IM P Saravana Krishnan were adjudged second and third. The total cash prize fund for Rapid and Blitz was ₹200000 and ₹100000 each respectively. Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 R5-6: Tejaswini, Mrittika and Bristy in a three-way lead

Tejaswini G defeated Rindhiya V to gain sole lead after Round 5 at Tata Steel Asian Junior Girls 2023. WIM Mounika Akshaya drew against WIM Saina Salonika. Although, Mounika had a good opportunity but she did not capitalize on it. In Round 6, Tejaswini held the top seed WIM Nazerke Nurgali (KAZ) to a draw. WCM Bristy Mukherjee defeated the second seeded WIM Saina Salonika with some precise play. WCM Kriti Mayur Patel lost against Mrittika Mallick. Thus, Tejaswini, Mrittika and Bristy are now in a three-way lead 5/6. Mrittika will face Tejaswini in the seventh round. Bristy will be up against Shubhi Gupta. Kaustuv Kundu becomes the latest International Master of India

Kaustuv Kundu scored three IM-norms and crossed 2400 in a little over a month's time to become India's latest International Master. The youth from Kolkata earned his maiden IM-norm at 1st Maharashtra GM 2022. He has won tournaments all over the country in all three formats. In recent times, his tournament triumphs is only second to GM Laxman R R, covered on our website. The 23-year-old man from Kolkata started his journey to Spain with 2266 rating and one IM-norm. In July, he scored two IM-norms at 45th Barbera del Valles Open 2023 and 47th Sitges Open. Before Sitges, he crossed 2400 in the live ratings at 23rd Sant Marti 2023. Mitrabha Guha dominates Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 Blitz Open

GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 All India Blitz Open. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. GM Diptayan Ghosh, Soham Bhattacharyya and Alekhya Mukhopadhyay scored 7/8 each. They were placed second, third and fourth respectively. Top three prizes were ₹15000 + trophy, ₹10000 and ₹5000 each respectively. This was Mitrabha's fourth tournament triumph of the year. This is the second time he won the Blitz Open event, part of Tata Steel Chess India Festival. Back in 2021, he won the event for the first time. However, the country is so vast, that the growth of chess has not reached all the places in equal measure. One such state in the country which is lagging behind is Meghalaya. The state doesn't have a titled player. But as IM Sagar Shah visited the place, he saw all the perfect elements in place for chess to grow exponentially. In this article he tells us about his experience of visiting the Tura District in Meghalaya and why chess could become hugely popular in the state.  

Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 R4: Liyanage Ranindu Dilshan goes on a king hunt

Sri Lanka no.1 FM Liyanage Ranindu Dilshan defeated FM Abilmansur Abdilkhair (KAZ) to maintain his lead. IM Gilbert Elroy Tarigan (INA) also won his game against IM Hari Madhavan N B to stay at the top of Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 Open. Both Liyanage and Gilbert are sharing the lead 3.5/4. They are closely followed by a dozen players at 3/4 each. In the Girls section, WIM Saina Salonika and Tejaswini G defeated Keerti Shree Reddy and WIM Zeinep Sultanbek (KAZ) respectively to join the leaders 3.5/4.
