Hans Niemann wins Uralsk Open 2023, Sethuraman second

GM Hans Niemann (USA) scored 7.5/9 to win Uralsk Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Five players - GM Sethuraman S P, GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM), GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (ARM), GM Boris Savchenko and Valery Sviridov scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed second to sixth. GM Aditya Mittal is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6/9 to secure ninth place. The total prize fund of the event was 23000000 Tenge, 19500000 Tenge in Open A 3500000 Tenge in Open B. World Youth U16 Olympiad 2023 R1: India scores an emphatic victory over Uganda 1: 3.5-0.5

Team India defeated Uganda 1 convincingly in the first round of FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2023. Unlike the regular Olympiad, the youth is a combined event where each team must have a boy and a girl in their four member playing team. Team India comprises - Aswath S, Arjun Adireddy, FM Harsh Suresh and Tejaswini G. Arjun was held to a draw in the first round. The remaining three won their respective games comfortably. IM FT IA Neeraj Kumar Mishra is the Captain of the team. India will face the top seed Kazakhstan 1 in Round 2. Two changes were made in this edition. One, time control has been changed to 45 minutes + 10 seconds increment. Is an Indian confirmed to play at the FIDE Candidates 2024?

The only Indian chess player to have played at the FIDE Candidates until now has been Vishy Anand. The five-time World Champion has been an absolute path breaker for Indian chess. However, after several years there is a chance for another Indian to make it to the Candidates. This time the Candidates is supposed to be held in April 2024. And it almost certain that one spot out of the 8 at the Candidates will be taken by an Indian chess player. At the currently ongoing FIDE World Cup 2023, we have 4 Indians in the final 9 players who are left. We tell you about the rules and navigate through the possibilities in this article.

FIDE World Cup 2023 R5.2: Gukesh to face Carlsen in the Quarterfinals

For the first time in FIDE World Cup history, India has three players - D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi, in the Quarterfinals. This is the highest ever so far. However, the number can increase to four if Vidit Gujrathi wins his tie-breaks tomorrow against Ian Nepomniachtchi. The total number of Indians in Round 6 can become five. GM Harika Dronavalli has to win her tie-breaks against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. Local hero, Nijat Abasov (AZE) defeated the UAE no.1 Salem Saleh. He will face the winner of Vidit and Nepomniachtchi. Gukesh drew against Hao Wang (CHN) which means Gukesh will face Magnus Carlsen in the Quarterfinals. Himal Gusain clinches 9th Ciudad de Oviedo Open 2023

IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 9th Ciudad de Oviedo Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Seven players - FM Stanislaw Zylka (POL), FM Jonas Prado Lobo (ESP), IM Vladyslav Larkin (UKR), IM Milosz Szpar (POL), FM Pablo Lopez Varela (ESP), GM Daniel H Campora (ARG) and GM Neelotpal Das scored 7/9 each. They were placed second to eighth according to tie-breaks. Neelotpal also remained undefeated. He was the only other Indian taking part in the event. He also made a top ten finish. FIDE World Cup 2023 R5.1: Gukesh beats Hao, now World no.7, Arjun also scores a victory

GM D Gukesh defeated the China no.4 GM Hao Wang to become the World no.7 in live ratings. The 17-year-old seized his opportunity when the Chinese made an incorrect rook retreat in the endgame. GM Arjun Erigaisi also won his game. He scored the full point against the Sweden no.1 GM Nils Grandelius. Arjun won a balanced rook and knight endgame when his opponent made a slight inaccuracy which was certainly not easy to defend practically. Praggnanandhaa, Vidit and Harika drew their respective games Ferenc Berkes (HUN), Ian Nepomniachtchi and Aleksandra Goryachkina respectively. Vidit had a nice initiative in the middlegame. Zhandos Agmanov victorious at Czech Open 2023 Pardubice, Lalit Babu second

IM Zhandos Agmanov scored 7.5/9 to win Czech Open Pardubice 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Eight players - GM Lalit Babu, IM Christopher Noe (GER), GM Jiri Stocek (CZE), GM Helgi Ass Gretarsson (ISL), IM Jakub Kosakowski (POL), FM Adelard Bai (TPE), GM G N Gopal and IM Evgenios Ioannidis (GRE) scored 7/9 each. Lalit was placed second, Noe third. The eventual champion, Zhandos suffered his sole loss of the event against Lalit in Round 7. Gopal is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He was placed ninth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the event was 200000 CZK. The top three prizes were 60000, 40000 and 30000 CZK along with a trophy each respectively. FIDE World Cup 2023 R4 TB: Praggnanandhaa squashes World #2 Nakamura, Gukesh & Harika move to Round 5

GM R Praggnanandhaa scored two fantastic victories over the reigning World Fischer Random champion - GM Hikaru in the fourth round of FIDE World Cup 2023. He will face GM Ference Berkes (HUN) who eliminated GM Boris Gelfand (ISR), GM Nikita Vitiugov and GM Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR) en route to the fifth round. GM D Gukesh drew the first 25'+10" rapid tie-break game and won the second one to advance to the next round. Gukesh will face GM Hao Wang (CHN). GM Harika Dronavalli knocked out IM Eline Roebers. She will face GM Aleksandra Goryachkina in Round 5.GM Nihal Sarin missed his opportunities against GM Ian Nepomniachtchi and eventually went on to lose. Madhavansh Mittal wins Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Jammu

Madhavansh Mittal and Arvindu scored 7.5/9 each at win Chess for Everyone All India Rating Open 2023 in Jammu. 13-year-old Madhavansh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Arvindu was placed second. Deepak Batra edged passed seven more players to secure third place finish scoring 7/9. The top three prizes were ₹5000 + trophy, ₹3000 and ₹2000. The tournament was held from 22nd to 26th July 2023 at IDPS School in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir. It was organized by Crown Trust in collaboration with IDPS School Jammu. This was Madhavansh's first rating tournament triumph of his career. Sharan Rao becomes the latest International Master of India

FM Sharan Rao crossed 2400 in the live ratings on Saturday 15th July at 42nd St. Veiter Jacques Lemans Open 2023 in Austria. After scoring his final IM-norm at Karel Janeček Open, part of 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023, Sharan finished second at this event and fulfilled the IM title requirements. The Mangalore man earned his first IM-norm at 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021. Then he secured his second norm at 1st Maharashtra GM Open 2022. He gained a staggering 174.8 Elo rating points in August 2023 FIDE Rating list. Although it must be noted that Prague event concluded on the last date of June. GM Vidit Gujrathi drew against GM Etienne Bacrot (FRA) to advance to the fifth round of FIDE World Cup 2023. He will face either GM Nihal Sarin or GM Ian Nepomniachtchi. GM Arjun Erigaisi is the only other Indian who advanced to the pre quarter-finals. Vidit will face the winner between GM Nihal Sarin and GM Ian Nepomniachtchi. Raunak Sadhwani triumphs at Serbia Open 2023 Masters

GM Raunak Sadhwani scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win Serbia Open 2023 Masters. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. GM Cristobal Henriquez Villagra (CHI) and IM Arystanbek Urazayev (KAZ) scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Raunak drew against both podium finishers and gained 12.4 Elo rating points. GM Pranesh M is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 to finish ninth. The total prize fund in the Masters section was €23500. The top three prizes were €5000, €3500 and €2500 along with a trophy each. 17-year-old Soham Bhattacharyya is the highest untitled finisher. He scored 6/9, gained 141.6 Elo rating points to secure his maiden IM-norm. 12-year-old Vihaan Dumir scored a perfect 7/7 to win the Beginners section. GM Jinshi Bai (CHN) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 16th Paleochora Open A 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, GM Ziaur Rahman (BAN) and FM Edvin Trost (SWE) scored 7/9 each. They shared the second place. Jinshi drew against Surya in the penultimate round. Both Surya and Ziaur remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the event was €10000. The top three prizes were €2000, €1500 and €1000 along with a trophy each respectively. FIDE World Cup 2023 R4.1: Vidit vanquishes Bacrot, Vincent Keymer beats Magnus Carlsen for the first time

GM Vidit Gujrathi scored a scintillating victory over GM Etienne Bacrot in Round 4.1 of FIDE World Cup 2023. Vidit launched a devastating attack on the kingside by rolling his pawns f4, e5, f5, f6 which yielded him a decisive advantage within the first 20 moves. He needs a draw in the second game to advance to the next round. GM Arjun Erigaisi missed a great opportunity to win in the rook and extra pawn endgame against GM Javokhir Sindarov (UZB). GM R Praggnanandhaa got a great grip in his position against GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA). He loosened it and allowed his opponent to escape. GM Harika Dronavalli survived a lost pawn endgame which was a bit complex, against IM Eline Roebers (NED). Out ofseven Indians, GM Koneru Humpy suffered the sole loss among Indian players, against GM Bella Khotenashvili. Humpy needs to win tomorrow to force tie-breaks. Germany no.1 GM Vincent Keymer defeated the world no.1 GM Magnus Carlsen for the first time in his career. The Norwegian must win tomorrow to force tie-breaks.
