Aleksandra Goryachkina wins New Delhi GP on tie-breaks

GM Aleksandra Goryachkina, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva and WGM Zhu Jiner - all three drew their respective final round games. They each finished with a 6/10 score. Goryachkina won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. The remaining two were placed second and third respectively. Bibisara scored her second GM-norm and Jiner earned her final GM-norm. She also crossed 2500 as she gained 17.6 Elo rating points, taking her live rating to 2506.6. Thus, Zhu Jiner becomes China's latest Grandmaster. She has earned a GM-norm in all three events she has participated at FIDE GP 2022-23. Currently, she is leading the GP. Fagernes GM Open 2023 R3: Abhimanyu, Koustav, Savitha and Sanket make a perfect start 3/3

WIM Savitha Shri B continues her fantastic form at Fagernes GM Open 2023. She defeated IM Elham Abdulrauf (NOR) in the second round where she made a unique rook lift in the Sicilian. IM Vantika Agrawal drew against GM Eduardas Rozentalis (LTU). Sanket Chakravarty beat his second consecutive IM of the event. This time he defeated IM Jonas Hacker (GER). FM Tanmay Chopra held IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen (NOR) to a draw. GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM Vahap Sanal (TUR), IM Koustav, WIM Savitha and Sanket are the five players to have won all three of their games. 1st Indore International GM Open R5-6: Ameya sets fire on the board

After 6 rounds of play, the battle is still going neck-to-neck in the 1st Indore GM International Open. 3 players lead the fray jointly - IM Aronyak Ghosh, IM Nitish Belurkar and IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, all with a score of 5.5/6. It was a double round day yesterday, and it was full of exciting games. IM Ameya Audi probably played one of the best games of his career to defeat GM Dzhumaev Marat, while Uddipan Roy, a young talent from West Bengal has gained a total of 130 elo points so far! New Delhi GP is poised for an exciting finish

GM Aleksandra Goryachkina made a quick 14-move draw with IM Polina Shuvalova. GM Harika Dronavalli also split the point against GM Kateryna Lagno. It is a well-known theoretical draw in the Berlin which has been played over a dozen times in the past three years. GM Koneru Humpy had a well contested draw against GM Nino Batsiashvili. The Georgian made a very nice knight sacrifice in the endgame to secure the half point. IM Vaishali suffered her fourth loss of the event. Vantika Agrawal is the 11th Indian Woman to become an International Master

On 29th of March 2023, 20-year-old WGM Vantika Agrawal scored her final IM-norm and crossed 2400 at Six Days Budapest Spring GM. Thus, she became the 11th female Indian to achieve the IM title. Vantika has won Gold at Online Olympiad 2020, she became the National Women champion in 2021 among her long list of accolades. The first IM-norm was scored at FIDE Grand Swiss for Women 2021 in Riga, Latvia. Eight and a half months later she secured her second IM-norm at 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 with a stellar performance. As er the April FIDE Rating list, the girl from Delhi is India no.5 and World no.46 among Women. Immediately after becoming an IM, she went to Norway where she has made a fantastic start at Fagernes GM Open 2023. Fagernes GM Open 2023 R1-2: Savitha and Vantika slay top GMs

World Rapid Women 2022 Bronze medalist, WIM Savitha Shri B stunned the top seed GM Sethuraman S P. The former Asian Continental champion, opted for an experimental Nimzowitsch Defense opening. He landed himself in an uncomfortable position out of the opening. The teenager seized her opportunity and scored a clinical victory. India's recently crowned IM Vantika Agrawal defeated the Poland no.4 GM Bartosz Socko. The Pole went for a passive defense of a backward pawn early in the middlegame. Vantika had no trouble converting her positional advantage into a win. 16 players including six Indians have won their first two games at Fagernes GM Open 2023. Aryan Tari wins Harpa Blitz Reykjavik Open 2023, Pranav Venkatesh second

GM Abhijeet Gupta lost to Sweden no.1 GM Nils Grandelius. He is now virtually out of the championship picture. The five-time Commonwealth Gold medalist misjudged a pawn capture in a rook and minor piece endgame. It eventually cost him the game. GM Mustafa Yilmaz (TUR), GM Maxime Lagarde (FRA), GM Gabor Papp (HUN), GM Nils and IM Quentin Loiseau (FRA) are in a five-way lead 6.5/8 heading into the final round. 14-players are trailing them by a half point at 6/8 each. After 4 rounds of play, there are 4 players with a perfect score in the 1st Indore International GM Open - GM Deep Sengupta, IM Aronyak Ghosh, IM Nitish Belurkar and GM Marat Dzhumaev. One of the unexpected results of this round was talented junior Aakash G (1842) taking down IM Anuj Shrivatri (2407)! On the same day, the U-1800 tournament IDA Cup International Open Chess Tournament also took off with over 300 players taking part. IM Vaishali held GM Koneru Humpy to a solid draw in Round 9 of New Delhi GP 2023. GM Harika Dronavalli lost to GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. Thus, Goryachkina has gained sole lead 6/9. After suffering two consecutive losses, GM Nino Batsiashvili finally scored her first win of the event against IM Polina Shuvalova. IM Bibisara Assaubayeva drew with GM Nana Dzagnidze. Bibisara and Zhu Jiner are at shared second place 5.5/9 each. It will be Kateryna vs Harika, Humpy vs Nino and Jiner vs Vaishali in the penultimate round 10 which starts today at 3 p.m. IST. 1st Indore International GM Open R2-3: Defeating Grandmasters is the new normal

Chess tournaments in India are well-known to have deceptive opposition. While someone's FIDE rating may show as 1800, in reality they often have the strength to defeat Grandmasters! The same thing is happening in the 1st Indore International GM Open. In the 2nd round, FM Aradhya Garg took down the top seed GM Levan Pantsulaia! FM Harsh Suresh also scored a very nice victory against GM Aleksej Aleksandrov. There were 2 rounds played in the 2nd day, and after round 3 there are a total of 11 players leading with 3/3. GM Harika Dronavalli scored her first win of New Delhi GP 2023 in Round 8. She defeated GM Nino Batsiashvili who was also in search of her first victory of the event. The latter misjudged her opponent Harika's intensity of attack on the kingside. It cost her a pawn and allowed the rooks to be invaded via the seventh rank. IM Polina Shuvalova got a better position out of the opening, IM Vaishali made incorrect decisions at critical junctures and lost her game. GM Kateryna Lagno mysteriously repeated moves in a winning position against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. WGM Zhu Jiner mantained her sole lead 5.5/8 as she drew with IM Bibisara Assaubayeva. Reykjavik Open 2023 R7: Pranav Venkatesh plays solid against Vasyl Ivanchuk

GM Abhijeet Gupta drew against GM Maxime Lagarde (FRA) in the seventh round of Reykjavik Open 2023. Both players tried to gain the upper hand till the very end. However, neither player budged and the interesting knight endgame ended without a winner. Turkey no.1 GM Mustafa Yilmaz defeated GM Leon Mons (GER) to join the lead with Abhijeet and Maxime at 6/7 each. GM Pranav Venkatesh had a solid draw against the legend, GM Vasyl Ivanchuk (UKR). IM Bibisara Assaubayeva had her first draw of New Delhi GP 2023 in the seventh round. She offered a draw to the World no.2 GM Koneru Humpy in a position where computer says her opponent was better. IM Vaishali had her third consecutive draw of the event, this time against GM Harika Dronavalli. GM Nino Batsiashvili made a mistake in the opening, gave up her queen and arrived at a lost position in 15 moves against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. GM Nana Dzagnidze suffered her third loss in seven games. The victor was GM Kateryna Lagno. WGM Zhu Jiner has emerged as the new sole leader 5/7. 1st Indore International GM Open R1: Anup's amazing win

After a splendid opening ceremony with cultural dances, speeches and a marching of players from different countries, the first Indore International GM tournament kicked off at the Emerald Heights City School, Indore! Usually the first round in any swiss GM tournament starts off with the pairings of the top GMs with comparatively lower-rated players, and that mostly means an easy first round for the top seeds. But in Indore, no less than 3 rating upsets happened in the first round itself! IM Anup Deshmukh scored a splendid win against GM Boris Savchenko with the White pieces. CM Gaurang Bagwe held the experienced GM Michal Krasenkow to a draw, and John Veny Akkarakaran  salavaged a draw against GM Alexei Fedorov. The 2nd round starts from 10 AM IST today. Reykjavik Open 2023 R5-6: Maxime Lagarde joins Abhijeet Gupta in the lead

GM Abhijeet Gupta defeated GM Pranav Venkatesh in the fifth round to gain sole lead 5/5. In the sixth round Abhijeet made a short 21-move draw against Turkey no.1 GM Mustafa Yilmaz. It allowed GM Maxime Lagarde (FRA) to catch up to him. He defeated Turkey no.2 GM Emre Can. Pranav bounced back by winning against IM Dimitar Mardov (USA). He is one of the sixth players in pursuit at a score of 5/6. FM Sahithi Varshini M defeated GM Simon Williams in the sixth round after the latter misplayed in the endgame allowing the teenager to score a win.
