Yes, Vishy Anand really played 6.Ke2 against GM Daniel Fridman. It was in a chess variant where castling is prohibited, thus 6.Ke2 is absolutely sensible move in that particular position because you have to do something with the king for its safety. Things eventually worked out in the favor of the maestro as he went on to beat the Germany no.10. He is now tied with Michael Adams at the top with 1.5 points each, after Germany no.4 Dmitrij Kollars beat the English legend. Today Anand will play against Dmitrij Kollars, the first round game which was postponed due to Kramnik falling ill. 55th Biel GMT R5: Gukesh beats Keymer five times in-a-row in ten days

D Gukesh has won all five games against Vincent Keymer at 55th Biel Chess Festival. First he defeated the Germany no.1 in Chess960 then Rapid, next twice in Blitz and now in their Classical encounter too. All of these happened within a span of ten days. Gukesh is now at 28/48, just two points behind the tournament leader, Liem Quang Le 30/48. The youngest Indian to reach 2700, is closely followed by Andrey Esipenko 27/48 and Nodirbek Abdusattorov 26.5/48. Aryan Chopra lost the game and lead to Kirill Alekseenko. In the third episode of the series "Olympiad stories with Saravanan", IM Sagar Shah and IM Venkata Saravanan discuss Judit Polgar's flabbergasting 12.5/13 performance in the 1988 Thessolanki Olympiad. Judit was rated 2365 FIDE at the time, with rating lists coming out every six months. Not only did Hungary sweep the championship to take gold and defeat the all-powerful soviet chess team, but Judit made an incredible 2694 performance, and she was barely twelve years old. Breaking news: Magnus Carlsen will not defend his World Championship in 2023

The five-time world champion has finally ended the speculation on Intenational Chess Day. The world no.1 mentioned in the new podcast, 'The Magnus Effect' with his best buddy, Magnus Barstad, that he will not defend his world championship in 2023. This does not mean that he is leaving chess or will never a play a world championship ever again. It just means, as of now, he will not defend his current world championship title. P Shyam Nikhil clinches 7th Noisiel Open, Vignesh second and Karthik third

IM P Shyam Nikhil scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 7th Noisiel International Open. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM Vignesh N R and GM Karthik Venkataraman scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Total prize fund of the tournament was €44000. Top three prizes were €1200 and trophy, €800 and €600 each. 11-year-old Aditya Kunal Patil won the Open C (Below 1600) category, scoring 7/9. He remained undefeated and finished a half point ahead of the field. The kid received €250 as his first prize. The 14th world champion, Vladimir Kramnik had to pull out at a short notice due to health reasons. The No Castling World Masters started with a game between English legend, Michael Adams and Germany no.10 Daniel Fridman in Round 1. Adams won that game. Vishy Anand joined the event in Round 2. He drew his game against Adams comfortably. The maestro will face Daniel Fridman in Round 3 today, Adams will be up against Germany no.4, Dmitrij Kollars. GM Visakh N R drew with GM Aryan Chopra and IM Pranav Anand lost to GM Kirill Alekseenko. GM Alexander Motylev also won his game to join the lead and make it four-way 5/6 at 55th Biel Chess Festival 2022 MTO. GM Iniyan P scored the biggest win of the round when he beat GM Yangyi Yu (CHN). Iniyan showed his intent to beat the World no.27. Despite having a very difficult position, he managed to survive and eventually capitalize on his opponent's mistake. The Amateur section at the World Open is a tournament for amateurs (below 2200) to showcase their strengths on a world platform. Bhavik Ahuja from Delhi was a participant, and he won the event in fabulous fashion scoring an unbeaten 5.0/6 and winning US$750. How did he plan his events? IM Pranav Anand showed his tenacity against GM Sethuraman S P. Despite having a completely lost position, he persevered and waited for his opportunity. When the former Asian champion missed plenty of chances to score a win, the 15-year-old seized his opportunity and walked away with a win. GM Aryan Chopra scored an emphatic victory over GM Leon Luke Mendonca. GM Visakh N R had a calm draw with GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM). Artem Omelja wins Slovakia Open Piestany 2022, Isha Sharma scores maiden IM and WGM-norm

Six players scored 6.5/9. GM Artem Omelja (UKR) won Slovakia Open Piestany 2022 due to better tie-breaks. FM Bartlomiej Niedbala (POL) and GM Anton Demchenko were placed second and third respectively. IM Raahil Mullick was the highest finisher among Indians. He scored 5.5/9 and gained 52 Elo rating points. WIM Savitha Shri B was the best finisher among female participants. She also scored the same points and gained same Elo rating too. Odisha's first Woman Grandmaster Kiran Manisha Mohanty brought the Chess Olympiad Torch to Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The individual Gold medalist for India at the Tromso Olympiad 2014, IM and WGM Padmini Rout, National Rapid 2017 champion, IM Anwesh Upadhyaya and Odisha's second International Master and also a FIDE Trainer, IM Swayangsu Satyapragyan relayed the Torch at Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark. All four of them are accomplished chess players who have won multiple medals and accolades combined in National, Asian and World level. Andrei Shchekachev triumphs at Paris IdF Masters 2022, Harsha Bharathakoti second

GM Andrei Shchekachev (FRA) and GM Harsha Bharathakoti scored 6.5/9 each at Paris IdF Masters. Andrei won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Harsha was placed second. Four players - GM Daniil Yuffa (ESP), IM Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad, IM Sidhant Mohapatra and IM Milosz Szpar (POL) scored 6/9 each. They were placed third to sixth as per tie-breaks. Harsha beat the eventual champion Andrei in the sixth round. 12-year-old FM Aarav Dengla scored an IM-norm. Total prize fund of the tournament was €13000. Top three prizes were €2500, €1200 and €1000 along with a trophy each.

Haik Martirosyan wins 55th Biel QBT Open, Harshit Raja second and Bharath Subramaniyam third

Armenia no.2 and the top seed of the tournament scored a mammoth 12.5/13 at 55th Biel Chess Festival QBT. It was an unprecedented result at the event. He finished a massive 2.5 points ahead of the competition. India's 69th GM Harshit Raja scored 10/13 to secure sole second place. Three player made 9.5/13. Out of them, India's 73rd GM Bharath Subramaniyam H was placed third according to tie-breaks. Gukesh scored 7.5/14 in the GMT Blitz event to finish fifth. Gata Kamsky won the segment scoring 8.5/14. However, Gukesh is still in the lead. MTO Round 5 will start today 18th July at 2 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. IST), Today is a rest day for the GMT participants. Gukesh becomes the youngest Indian, third youngest in the world to cross 2700, now World no.32

The youngest Indian Grandmaster, D Gukesh is now the youngest Indian to cross 2700 Elo rating. At the age of 16 years and a little over 1.5 months, Gukesh became the third youngest in the world after Wei Yi and Alireza Firouzja to cross the magical rating barrier. He is the sixth Indian to achieve this incredible feat after Vishy Anand, Krishnan Sasikiran, Pentala Harikrishna, Vidit Gujrathi and B Adhiban. He defeated World Blitz 2013 champion, GM Liem Quang Le (VIE) to take his live rating to 2703.9 and become World #32. The calm and composed teenager has also emerged as the sole leader of the GMT with 16.5/26. GMT Round 4 starts Tuesday 19th July at 2 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. IST). A total of 14-rounds of Blitz will be played today in a double round-robin format.
