Belgrade GP R2: Vidit beats Fedoseev to take a full point lead in Pool C

Vidit Gujrathi scored his second consecutive victory at FIDE Belgrade Grand Prix 2022. Vladimir Fedoseev's tactical error cost him an exchange. Later, Vidit found a beautiful move to secure his win. He is now a full point ahead of the field in Pool B. Harikrishna was unable to seize his advantage in a completely winning position against Tabatabaei. Anish Giri is playing some of his best chess as he also scored his second win with another sacrifice. Vidit will face Richard Rapport in Round 3. MPL 58th National Senior R10: Gukesh rejoins Arjun Erigaisi at the top

Arjun Erigaisi (TEL) drew with Iniyan P (TN) in the penultimate round of MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. Thus, it allowed D Gukesh (TN) to catch up as he beat Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) to regain the lead 8.0/10. Seven players are at 7.5/10 - GM Iniyan P, GM Aravindh, GM Aryan, GM Sethuraman S P, GM Visakh, GM Mitrabha Guha and IM Pranav. The two-time Tamil Nadu State Senior champion and a single GM-norm holder, Pranav Venkatesh ended GM Lalit Rohit's 45-game unbeaten streak in Classical chess since December 2021. Belgrade GP R1: Vidit scores a fiery win against Shirov

Vidit Gujrathi started with a very nice victory against Alexei Shirov at FIDE Belgrade GP 2022. Harikrishna lost to Nikita Vitiugov after making an inaccuracy early in the middlegame. Anish Giri and Dmitry Andreikin defeated Amin Tabatabaei and Alexander Grischuk respectively. Andreikin also mentioned that it could be their last tournament. It is in reference to the fact that IOC recommended banning Russian and Belarussian players and officials to be banned from all sports a couple of days ago. MPL 58th National Senior R8-9: Arjun Erigaisi gains sole lead 7.5/9

GM Arjun Erigaisi (TEL) met the toughest challenge in the form of IM Pranav V (TN) in Round 9. Despite being completely lost on multiple occasion, Arjun showed tenacity and overcame adversity to emerge victorious. He is now the sole leader with a score 7.5/9 at MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. GM D Gukesh (TN), GM Aryan Chopra (DEL), GM Aravindh Chithambaram (TN) and GM Iniyan P (TN) are at a half point behind him at 7.0/9 each. Iniyan missed a win in the final moments against Gukesh. Divya Deshmukh on the verge of winning MPL 47th National Women Chess Championship 2022

WGM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) registered her seventh consecutive victory at MPL 47th National Women Chess Championship. She defeated the top seed IM Vaishali (TN). Now she just needs a draw in the final round against IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB) to win the tournament. In a battle former National Women champions, Soumya drew with IM Padmini Rout (PSPB). WIM Priyanka Nutakki (AP) scored her second hat-trick of the event by winning against WGM Pratyusha Bodda (AP). WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) had an interesting draw with WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB). IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) suffered third loss of the event, against WIM Sakshi Chitlange (MAH). IM Anwesh Upadhyaya is now safe as he reaches Polish border

Anwesh Upadhyaya, Indian IM, doctor, former National Rapid Champion, was trapped in his apartment in Kyiv as the Russian troops entered Ukraine. Things were looking gloomy as there was curfew imposed and it was difficult to move out. However, when the curfew was lifted, Anwesh and fiance took a train from Kyiv to Lviv. There he was helped by Olexandr Prohorov, an International chess arbiter from Ukraine. Prohorov ensured that the couple had a place to stay in Lviv and also helped to plan their safe exit to Poland. At the time of writing the article, Anwesh has safely reached Poland and moving towards Warsaw. He is safe.

2nd leg of FIDE Grand Prix 2022 to begin in Belgrade with Vidit and Hari

The FIDE Grand Prix 2022 will take place in Belgrade from the 1st of March 2022. This is the 2nd leg of the cycle. We have our Indian stars Vidit Gujrathi and Pentala Harikrishna featuring in the event. After Vidit and Hari notched up 3 and 2 Grand Prix points respectively, they would need an excellent finish in this event to have any chances of qualifying to the Candidates. The double IM-norm holder defeated IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) in Round 7 to become clear sole leader at MPL 47th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Divya is now a full point ahead of the field. GM Arjun Erigaisi defeated GM Abhijeet Gupta and then drew with GM Aryan Chopra to maintain his lead. While Arjun Erigaisi is yet to show any weakness, Gukesh has already overcome a disaster. Both Sakshi and Divya seized their advantage in the major piece endgame against WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) and WIM Priyanka Nutakki (AP) respectively. The clash of titans between GM D Gukesh (TN) and GM Arjun Erigaisi (TEL) ended in an exciting draw. GM Aryan Chopra (DEL) was unable to capitalize on his advantage against GM Lalit Rohit (PSPB). Five-time Commonwealth Gold medalist, GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) beat IM Aditya Mittal (MAH). IM Koustav Chatterjee (WB) continues his dream run as he beat GM Karthikeyan Murali (PSPB). Thus Lalit, Abhijeet Gupta and Koustav Chatterjee joined the previous round leaders Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi. FIDE Council condemns Russia's military action in Ukraine

FIDE Council held an extraordinary meeting yesterday to address the current situation due to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. Just like FIFA and UEFA had urgent executive committee meeting, FIDE also had one where it condemned the military action. Among other things, it was also announced that no official FIDE chess competitions and events will take place in Russia and Belarus. Sergey Karjakin and Sergey Shipov's public statements about support of unjustified military action is condemned by FIDE Council. Indian IM and doctor Anwesh Upadhyaya trapped in his apartment in Kyiv

Things are getting really tense for IM Anwesh Upadhyaya, an Indian IM and doctor, who is stuck in his apartment in Kyiv. The city is under siege from Russian army and a curfew has been imposed until Monday. It is too risky to venture out and Anwesh is stuck in his apartment. The former National Rapid champion of India was in Kyiv since nearly a decade to study medicine and now works at a local hospital as a resident doctor. He is hoping for things to improve so that he can make his way back to India.

Magnus Carlsen wins Airthings Masters 2022

Magnus Carlsen took the minimum number of games to win the second set of the Finals. Unlike the first season, the world champion started Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 by winning Airthings Masters. After a draw in the first game, Carlsen won the next two games to win the Finals. Although Nepomniachtchi had a pleasant position in the second game, he just went all-in which did not work out. One cannot forget the world events which is going on currently certainly has affected Nepomniachtchi's performance in the Finals, but that does not take any credit away from the world no.1. WIM Priyanka Nutakki (AP) held the top seed IM Vaishali R (TN) to a draw in Round 4 of MPL 47th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Vaishali and Priyanka are joined by six more women in the lead 3.5/4. They are - WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB), IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB), WGM Divya Deshmukh (MAH), WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB), WGM Srija Seshadri (TN) and WIM Sakshi Chitlange (MAH). Soumya had a great escape against state mate WFM Srishti Pandey in the third round. Sakshi had a great day as she defeated WGM Nandhidhaa P V and drew with Soumya in Round 3 and 4 respectively.
