World Women’s Team 2021 SF: India advances to the Finals, sets up a clash with Russia

Indian women have done it again. They eliminated Georgia to advance to the Finals of the FIDE World Women's Team Championship 2021. Indian women have never won a medal at this event, until now. Qualifying to the Finals of the first-ever knockout format of this event has assured a Silver, however we all want our women to go for Gold. The entire team effort brought India to this historic Final. While everyone wanted an India-Russia Final at the Online Olympiads last month, now it will happen over the board at Sitges, Spain. Junior U21 Round Table Open R1-6: Alexey Sarana in sole lead 5.5/6

IM Bharath Subramaniyam H is terrific from at Junior U21 Round Table Open. He prevented the tournament leader, GM Alexey Sarana 5.5/6 from making a double hat-trick. Bharath is at 4.5/6 along with GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM Hans Niemann, GM Vugar Asadli, IM Muradli Mahammad and IM Nail Bashirli. Arjun Erigaisi 5.0/6 will face Sarana in the seventh round. Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Iniyan suffered a loss in the sixth round against Arjun, Muradli and Bashirli respectively. A total of 57 players including 9 GMs, 8 IM, a WGM and 4 WIMs are taking part from 14 countries across the world, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Total prize fund is €20000, first prize being €10000. World Women’s Team 2021 QF: India eliminates Kazakhstan and advances to the Semifinals

India eliminated Kazakhstan in the Quarterfinals to advance to the Semifinals of FIDE World Women's Team Championship 2021. This triumph ensured India's first ever medal in this event. Mary Ann Gomes played a key role as she won both of her games in the Quartefinals. Harika after missing out a win in the first Duel, managed to convert her advantage and score a convincing win in the second Duel. Vaishali drew both of her games. Tania lost a completely winning game and Bhakti also had a good position in her game. India will face Georgia in the Semifinals today. CCT Finals R5: Carlsen annihilates Nakamura

It is well-known by now that whenever Carlsen loses a game, he makes a fierce comeback. Nakamura faced the wrath of the world champion who defeated him 2.5-0.5 in fifth round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals. Vachier-Lagrave also took the minimum number of games to defeat Duda. Artemiev and Radjabov defeated Mamedyarov and Aronian 2.5-1.5 each respectively. Carlsen once again extended his lead to 26.5 points, So seems to be the only one who is remotely close at 21.5 points. TePe Sigeman & Co 2021 R7: Nihal finishes with a draw against Short

Nihal Sarin scored 3.0/7 to finish at shared sixth place in TePe Sigeman & Co Tournament 2021. It goes without saying that Nihal was not in his best form in this event. He managed to make a draw with the legendary Nigel Short in the final round. Gawain Jones became the only player to beat the tournament champion, Jorden van Foreest, still the Netherlands no.2 managed to finish a full point ahead of the field. Short, Jones and Keymer shared the second place 4.0/7. Nils Grandelius finished at sole fifth place 3.5/7, Nihal and Bacrot shared sixth position and Jonas Buhl Bjerre had a tough tournament 1.5/7. World Women’s Team 2021 R5: India will face Kazakhstan in the Quarterfinals

India defeated France 3-1 in the fifth round of FIDE World Women's Team Championship 2021 to finish second in Pool A. They will face the third place finisher of Pool B, Kazakhstan in the Quarterfinals today. India has an advantage that they can bring an element of surprise with the board order which their opponent team cannot, as they have only four members and no reserve player. Harika and Mary have remained unbeaten in the Pool stage. Knockout stage is a best of two matches, named 'Duel'. Sankalp Gupta wins Joytu Sheikh Hasina International GM 2021

IM Sankalp Gupta scored an unbeaten 7.0/9 to win Joytu Sheikh Hasina International GM 2021. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Five players finished at 6.5/9 and they were placed second to sixth respectively. They are - IM Mitrabha Guha, IM Aronyak Ghosh, IM Sayantan Das, GM Ziaur Rahman and GM Masoud Mosadeghpour. Sankalp won US$ 4000 (approx ₹297000), Mitrabha received US$ 2500 (approx. ₹185000) and Aronyak got (₹111000). CCT Finals R4: Artemiev beats Carlsen

Vladislav Artemiev handed Magnus Carlsen his first match defeat of the event in the fourth round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals. The Russian remained undefeated and did not require tie-breaks. Radjabov, Aronian, Nakamura and Mamedyarov are the remaining victors of the round with only Nakamura playing the sole tie-breaks of the day as he drew all four Rapid games against So. Jorden van Foreest clinches TePe Sigeman & Co 2021 with a round to go

Jorden van Foreest defeated Jonas Buhl Bjerre to win TePe Sigeman & Co Tournament 2021 with a round to go. He is now 5.0/6 and there is no possibility for anyone to catch him even if he loses his last round game against Gawain Jones. Nigel Short and Nils Grandelius are at 3.5/6, Jones and Keymer are at 3.0/6 each respectively. Nihal Sarin had a good initiative against Etienne Bacrot, but he was unable to seize his chance. Both are now at 2.5/6. India has advanced to the Quarterfinals at FIDE World Women's Team Championship 2021. They defeated Armenia 2.5-1.5 in the third round and lost to CFR Team (Russia) 3-1 in the fourth round. Harika played solid and drew both of her games, Tania and Bhakti scored important victories to ensure India's victory against Armenia, Vaishali lost both of her games, Mary drew her only game. Both Vaishali and Mary had good chances against Kosteniuk and Shuvalova respectively. The Chess Super League is a grand event which will be held online from the 11th to the 17th of October 2021. Samay Raina, ChessBase India and Nodwin Gaming have come together to launch the league which will be known as the Chess Super League. Each team will be owned by a well-known celebrity and will consist of Top International players, top Indian players and top Indian juniors. The total prize fund of the event is Rs.40 lakh (US$54,000). Well known players who have confirmed their participation are Ding Liren, Anish Giri, Teimour Radjabov, Hikaru Nakamura, Hou Yifan, Muzychuk sisters, Koneru Humpy, Vidit Gujrathi, D. CCT Finals R3: Carlsen beats Vachier-Lagrave in tie-breaks

Magnus Carlsen is cruising towards the finish as he beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the third round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals. The world champion bounced back strong after suffering three losses against Mamedyarov on the previous day. The Frenchman managed to defeat the world champion only once. Duda and Giri got the better of Azerbaijan's Mamedyarov and Radjabov in tie-breaks respectively. Jorden van Foreest increased his lead as he defeated Etienne Bacrot in the fifth round of TePe Sigeman & Co Tournament 2021. Bacrot's passive maneuvering of his piece cost him the game. Jonas Buhl Bjerre suffered his third loss of the event, this time against Sweden no.1, Nils Grandelius. Nigel Short missed a great opportunity to beat compatriot Gawain Jones for the first time since 2012. He tweeted feeling like he lost the game. Indian women made a good start at FIDE World Women's Team Championship 2021. They drew the first round 2-2 against Azerbaijan and won the second round match against Spain 1.5-2.5. Currently they are in shared second place along with Armenia with 3.0/4. Four teams from each pool will advance to the Knockout stages. Harika scored 1.5/2, Tania lost her first round game, Bhakti made 0.5/2 and Mary drew her only game in the second round. India will face Armenia in the third round and CFR Team (Russia) in the fourth round. CCT Finals R2: Carlsen wins a thriller against Mamedyarov

If the recent over-the-board encounter between Mamedyarov and Carlsen left you unsatiated and kept you wanting for more, fret not, they had a slobber-knocker of a match in the second round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals. After six decisive games, Carlsen defeated Mamedyarov in Armageddon to win the match. Vachier-Lagrave lived up to his proclamation and dominated So by winning the match in just three games. Duda and Aronian defeated Giri and Artemiev by 2.5-1.5 each respectively without the need of tie-breaks. Nakamura got the better of Radjabov in Blitz tie-breaks.
