Quantbox Chennai GM R3: Vincent Keymer outplays Karthikeyan Murali, scores a hat-trick

GM Vincent Keymer (GER) has made a perfect start at Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2025. He completely outplayed GM Karthikeyan Murali after the latter made a couple of positional mistakes in consecutive moves. Keymer is the sole leader at 3/3. GM Arjun Erigaisi is the only player at 2.5/3. Arjun defeated GM Ray Robson (USA) comfortably after getting a dream position out of the English opening. GM Awonder Liang (USA) and GM Vidit Gujrathi scored their first wins of the event against GM Jorden van Foreest (NED) and GM Nihal Sarin respectively. Velammal MHS Golden at World Schools Team Championship 2025 with a perfect score

Velammal MHS scored a perfect 16/16 to become World Schools Team champions. They won the event with a round to spare when they defeated Seed Educational Complex (KAZ) by 0.5-3.5 in Round 7. National School of Physics and Mathematics (KAZ), The Harker School (USA) and Astana 2 RSPM (KAZ) scored 12/16 each. They secured second to fourth place respectively according to tie-breaks. Velammal MHS Mogappair won the inaugural edition in the Under-12 category back in 2023. Instead of two separate events in Under-12 and Under-18 categories, there was only one event this time. Harsh Suresh prevails at 18th Paracin Open 2025, Srihari L second and Vignesh N R third

IM Harsh Suresh scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 18th Paracin International Chess Festival Open A (>2100) 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM Srihari L scored 7/9 to secure second place. GM Vignesh N R, IM Arif Abdul Hafiz (INA) and GM Nikita Matinian scored 6.5/9 each. They secured third, fourth and fifth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund in Open A was RSD 1170000 (≈ €10000). The top three prizes were RSD 300000, 200000 and 160000 along with a trophy each respectively. Vignesh won the Blitz Rating event scoring an unbeaten 10/11. Quantbox Chennai GM R2: Nihal misses big against Giri, Keymer wins two in-a-row

The second round of Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2025 witnessed four decisive games. The reigning Dutch champion, GM Jorden van Foreest (NED) held the World no.5, GM Arjun Erigaisi to a draw. GM Ray Robson (USA) won an exciting rollercoaster game against GM Vidit Gujrathi. GM Nihal Sarin missed quite a few opportunities to beat GM Anish Giri (NED). It ended in a draw. World no.21, GM Vincent Keymer (GER) scored his second consecutive win at the event. This time he got the better of the reigning World Junior champion, GM Pranav Venkatesh. In the Challengers section, GM Iniyan Pa and GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored the full point over GM Harika Dronavalli and GM Leon Luke Mendonca respectively. Round 3 starts today at 3 p.m. IST. Nihaan Pohane clear first at Late Ramesh Vinayakrao Kotwal Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2025

Top seed, Nihaan Pohane scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Late Ramesh Vinayakrao Kotwal Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Sabir Adnan scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Shubham Basone scored 7.5/9 to finish third. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000. The top three prizes were ₹21000, ₹11000 and ₹5000 along with a trophy each respectively. The two-day nine-round Swiss League Rapid Rating Open tournament  was organized by Gondia District Chess Association  at Vinayakrao Kotwal Memorial Hall, Bhavbhuti Ranga Mandir in Gondia, Maharashtra on 12th and 13th July 2025. Yeoh Li Tian becomes the first-ever Grandmaster of Malaysia

It has been a long time coming, but Malaysia finally has a chess grandmaster in 26-year-old Yeoh Li Tian. This milestone comes 51 years after the formation of the Malaysian Chess Federation in 1974. With this achievement, Yeoh joins an elite group of about 2000 players recognised by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) for their mastery of the game. Quah Seng Sun writes about this historic feat. Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2025 is off to a great start. Arjun Erigaisi and Vincent Keymer (GER) scored the wins in the Masters section. Leon Luke Mendonca, Diptayan Ghosh and Pranesh M won their respective games in the Challengers. Arjun got the better of Awonder Liang (USA) who could not navigate his attack well. Nihal Sarin had an opportunity to bounce back in the endgame after an initial mistake. Unfortunately he could not find it in low time. Jorden van Foreest (NED) quite possibly played the most exciting game of the round after he sacrificed his knight against Vidit Gujrathi. Marium Fatima clear first at 47th Barbera del Valles B 2025, Pratik Gengaje second and Parth Moghe third

Marium Fatima scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win XLVII Barbera del Valles Open B (<2099) 2025. The teenager finished a half point ahead of the rest. Pratik Gengaje scored 7/8 to finish second. Four players scored 6/8. Out of them, Parth Moghe was placed third due to better tie-break scores. The top three prizes in Open B were €400, €300 and €250 each respectively. The nine-day eight-round Swiss League Rating tournament was organized by  Marina Ponsa Alcubierre at Barbera del Valles in Barcelona, Spain from 4th to 12th July 2025. Zaven Andriasian dominates MRU Blitz 2025, Velavaa Ragavesh third

GM Zaven Andriasian scored an unbeaten 10/11 to win MRU Blitz Rating Open 2025. It was part of Vilnius Open 2025. He finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the field. Three players - FM Andrey Levitskiy (UKR), CM Velavaa Ragavesh and IM Vaidas Sakalauskas (LTU) scored 8.5/11 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively according to tie-breaks. Velavaa drew against the eventual winner of the tournament, Zaven in the ninth round. The total prize fund was €500. The top three prizes were €100, €70 and €50 along with a medal each. The one-day eleven round Blitz Rating Open tournament was organized by Public institution Chess World, MRU SSC and Vilnius Chess Club at Mykolas Romeris University in Vilnius, Lithuania on 11th July 2025. Pranav Venkatesh beats Kazybek Nogerbek in a Wild Card match to earn his place at FIDE Grand Swiss 2025

In a battle of two World Junior champions, the current champion, GM Pranav Venkatesh defeated the former champion, GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ) 1.5-0.5. The match was for a Wild Card entry into the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025. Pranav did not qualify via rating, thus he had to play this match. The first game was a draw, Pranav won the second one, which resulted in him winning the match. A total of 18 Indians, 13 in Open and five in Women have qualified to FIDE Grand Swiss and Grand Swiss for Women event respectively. World Champion D Gukesh to face World Cup winner Jan-Krzysztof Duda in Katowice, Poland

Currently, there is a trend of various matches between two chess players. However, this match is quite a unique one. The reigning 18th World Champion, D Gukesh will battle FIDE World Cup 2023 winner, Jan-Krzysztof Duda. It will be a match of six Blitz games with a time control of 3'+2" each. The match will take place at Rialto Cinema in Katowice, Poland. Silesian Chess Federation and Mokate are organising this event. IM Jakub Seemann became Poland's latest Grandmaster a few days ago. Subrota Biswas clear first at GM Zia Memorial 2025, Kushagra Mohan third

FM Subrota Biswas scored 8/9 to win GM Zia Memorial Rating 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Late GM Ziaur Rahman's son - FM Zia Tahsin Tajwar (BAN) and IM Kushagra Mohan scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was Tk 500000. The top three prizes were Tk 150000, 100000 and 75000 each respectively. The seven-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Tasmin Sultana and Bangladesh Chess Federation at Bangladesh Chess Federation in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 5th to 11th July 2025. Anirudhha Potawad wins 3rd G H Raisoni Memorial Pune Rapid Rating Open 2025

Four players - FM Anirudhha Potawad, IM Kushagra Mohan, Viresh Sharnarthi and IM Akshay Borgaonkar scored 8/9 each at 3rd G H Raisoni Memorial Pune Rapid Rating Open 2025. Anirudhha won the tournament due to better tie-break scores. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Anirudhha lost to Kushagra in the last round. Before that he defeated Viresh and Akshay. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹51000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹26000 each respectively. The one-day rapid rating tournament was organized by G H Raisoni Sports and Cultural Foundation and Kalpana Prakash Welfare Foundation at G H Raisoni Institute of Engineering & Management in Pune, Maharashtra on 13th July 2025. Divya Deshmukh winning the FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 is a phenomenal moment for Indian chess! She became the fourth Indian woman to achieve the Grandmaster title. What makes her achievement even more extraordinary is that she didn’t have a single GM norm before the event. With this, Divya has entered the top 15 in the women's rating list.
