In 2018, Goa organized the biggest sporting event in the state. Was it cricket event, or a football tournament? Turns out it was chess! The 1st Goa GM International 2018 saw record participation of over 1200 participants at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium. This year the tournament is back again, bigger and better from the 18th to 25th of June 2019. We bring you a review of the tournament held in 2018, so that you know what to expect this year. Ian Nepomniachtchi wins Moscow GP

The first leg of the FIDE Grand Prix organized by World Chess at Moscow in Russia is over, and Ian Nepomniachtchi has taken a significant step toward trying to become the challenger for next year’s World Chess Championship match. But there is a long way to go before Nepomniachtchi, or someone else, will earn the right to play for the title. The match was decided by two rapid tie-breaker games after the regular games were both drawn. The first symbolic move in the game A. Grischuk - I. 10-year-old Ilamparthi wins 30th CUSAT Open Rating tournament and creates history

Ten-year-old A R Ilamparthi of Tamil Nadu created history by winning the CUSAT International FIDE rated tournament held at the Cochin university of Science and Technology, Kochi. One has to search and find whether it is a world record. The traditional CUSAT FIDE rated tournament completed its 30th edition on 22nd May 2019. The four-day open tournament comprising eight rounds had 343 participants from nine states. IM Al Muthaiah of Tamil Nadu had the privilege of being top seeded, followed by Senthil Maran, also from Tamil Nadu. But, fifth seeded A R Ilamparthi of Chennai had the honour of winning his maiden Open FIDE rated tournament title. Photo: R Anantharam

World's youngest GM Gukesh is now a teenager

A young boy from Chennai was taught chess when he was six years old. Seven years later, today, he became a teenager! 13 years old. What happened in those seven years? Well, the youngster became the under-11 national champion, under-12 Asian Champion, under-12 World Champion, scored his three IM norms, reached 2400 Elo, became an IM, scored his three GM norms, reached 2500, became a GM, became India's youngest GM, second youngest GM in the history of chess! Phew... Yes, the youngster we are talking about is Gukesh! And the good news for Indian chess is that he has just started his journey. A very happy 13th birthday, Gukesh.

Aravindh Chithambaram is India's first Triple Crown Champion

Aravindh Chithambaram becomes the first Indian to become the National Triple Crown Champion by winning National Rapid and Blitz titles on 28th May 2019. He had won National Open Senior title in December 2018. Aravindh etched his name in history books in an emphatic manner as he scored 10.5/11 in Rapid and 10.0/11 in Blitz. His record is similar to what Carlsen had done in 2014 when he became the first male player to become World Triple Crown Champion when he held World title in all three formats Classical, Rapid and Blitz. Playoff Will Decide Moscow Grand Prix

Tie-breaker games will be necessary to decide the winner of the Moscow Grand Prix after Ian Nepomniachtchi and Alexander Grischuk, two Russians, agreed to a swift draw Tuesday in Game 2 of the final. The Grand Prix is using a new knockout format of two game mini-matches at classical, or slow, time controls, followed by tie-breaker games at progressively faster time controls if the regulation part of the match ends in a tie. The Moscow Grand Prix, which is being held at the Central Chess Players’ House, is the first in a series of four tournaments to select two players for next year’s Candidates tournament. Nielsen on ten years of Mexico 2007 (R09): Nothing against the Marshall, yet Anand leads by a full point

After his round 8 draw against Gelfand, Vishy Anand was in a half point lead over the field at the Mexico World Championship 2007. In round 9 he was up against Levon Aronian. Anand opened the game with 1.e4 and Aronian replied with the fashionable Marshall Gambit. Did Anand have anything up his sleeve? Well, team Anand had come up with a new idea of retreating the rook to e2 followed by f3 and Kf2. This all looked pretty artificial and within a few moves the peace treaty was signed. Not a great result for Vishy, but on the bright side, both his main competitors Gelfand and Kramnik suffered losses to Grischuk and Morozevich respectively and Vishy raced to a full one point lead over the field!

Moscow GP Finals: Grischuk-Nepo Game 1 ends up in a draw

Game 1 of the final of the FIDE Moscow Grand Prix ended in a draw after 38 moves as neither Alexander Grischuk nor Ian Nepomniachtchi, who are both Russian, could make any appreciable headway against the other. The first symbolic move in the game was made by a young chess player Albina Yismailova in presence of FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich. Despite playing White, Grischuk found himself under pressure almost from the beginning as he was surprised by the preparation of Nepomniachtchi. While Grischuk took large amounts of time to find the best moves, Nepomniachtchi blitzed through the opening. Photo: World Chess

Rating of Indian chess players reinstated by FIDE

FIDE President Arkadij Dvorkovich in his statement on FIDE website says,"Nearly a decade ago, FIDE, at the behest of the All India Chess Federation, removed the Elo ratings of dozens of players and expunged their names from the records. Ujjwal and Yashasvi win ARCA State under-15 2019

Ujjwal Deep and Yashasvi Gupta of Jaipur are the champions in ARCA State under-15 Championship 2019. Ujjwal scored 7.0/8 to win the tournament. Raj Kumawat and Arun Kataria also finished at 7.0/8, however due to a better tie-break score, Ujjwal was declared Champion. Among the girls, Yashasvi Gupta, Elakshi Srivastava, Dakshita Kumawat and Tanish Bhagchandani finished at 6.0/8. Yashasvi was adjudged the winner due to her better tie-break score. Ananya Bothra wins 45th West Bengal State Women's 2019

Ananya Bothra won her maiden State title when she scored a perfect 7.0/7 at 45th West Bengal State Women's 2019. She gained a massive 110 ELO Rating points with a performance rating of 2233. In the final round, she defeated the defending Champion Samriddhaa Ghosh in a topsy-turvy endgame to claim the crown. For the first ever, West Bengal State Women's had cash prize. The champion won ₹8000 cash and a shining new trophy. Carlsen and Ding Liren lead, Vishy not in great form at Lindores Abbey Chess Stars

The two crucial factors that will make Carlsen's task difficult of winning the Lindores Abbey Chess Stars 2019 are Ding Liren, who has fared excellently against Carlsen in recent times and the other being cold. The tournament is being played in a distillery in Newburgh, Scotland and Magnus is feeling quite cold in there. Nepomniachtchi is the Second Finalist at Moscow GP

Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia will face his compatriot, Alexander Grischuk, in the final of the Moscow Grand Prix starting on Monday. Getting there was not easy. One day after Grischuk qualified for the final by beating Hikaru Nakamura of the United States in the regulation portion of their match, Nepomniachtchi needed to overcome Radoslaw Wojtaszek of Poland in tie-breaker games to advance. It turned out to be the longest tie-breaker of the tournament. Both rapid games ended in draws, necessitating two more games at a faster time control of 10 minutes per player, with 10 seconds added to the time after each move. After the first game in the faster format ended in a draw, Nepomniachtchi finally prevailed in the second game, clinching the match. Photo: World Chess

Al Muthaiah wins 1st ICA Wayanad Open 2019

IM Al Muthaiah wins third tournament in three months and his fourth in the year when he scored 7.5/9 and won 1st ICA Wayanad Open 2019. Four players finished at the same score of 7.5/9, they are IM Al Muthaiah, Senthil Maran K, Anilkumar O T and S Prasanna. Due to a better tie-break score, Muthaiah was declared the champion of the tournament. Senthil Maran was placed 2nd, Anilkumar and Prasanna had to be content with 3rd and 4th place respectively. The tournament took place at Hotel Regency, Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad, Kerala from 11th to 15th May 2019.
