The Fighter - India's 59th GM Visakh NR

He is a man of few words and lets his moves to do the talking. Visakh NR achieved his first GM norm at the Pardubice Open in Czech Republic in 2016, he scored his 2nd GM norm at the Turkish League in 2018 and the final norm came at the Delhi GM International 2019. Born on 24th of April 1999, Visakh achieved his GM title on 15th of January 2019 at the age of 19 years and 9 months. Coming from a humble background Visakh as well as his brother have faced quite a lot of financial hardships. But in spite of all the difficulties, they have never stopped their chess career. In this article you get to know more about India's 59th GM, his journey to the grandmaster title and his future aims and ambitions.

PSPB wins National Team Women 2019 and almost Open category

PSPB wins National Team 2019 in both Open and Women category with a round to spare for second consecutive year. However, there is one unlikely scenario where Air India can win the Open category. Everything has to go Air India's way completely to get the title. In an unlikely scenario, if PSPB loses against Alekhine Chess Club-A and Air India wins with a minimum score of 3.5-0.5 against Bengal Red in the final round, only then they can become champion. PSPB dominated Day 4, by derailing both RSPB-A and RSPB-B with a same score of 3-1. Among the women, PSPB Women defeated LIC emphatically in round 5 with a score of 3.5-0.5 and whitewashed Tamil Nadu 4-0 in the penultimate round. This report contains games, photos and positions. National Teams 2019 Day 3: PSPB takes sole lead in both Open and Women section

PSPB defeated AAI in a nail biter finish after all games ended up in a draw. Team PSPB was waiting with baited breath and hoping for Aravindh to convert a long term advantage. Reigning National Champion, GM Aravindh Chithambaram did not disappoint and won a thriller finish which went down to the last seconds in four hour long thrill-ride. In the women section, PSPB women also had an exact same score, however they had three decisive results. Newly crowned Asian Continental Women's Champion IM Padmini Rout picked up the quickest win for her team as she outplayed current National Women's Champion WGM Bhakti Kulkarni. An intricacy that even many GMs may not know!

In chess, techinque is extremely important. Often there are two paths to victory. For the untrained eye, both the options look the same, because both lead to a win. But for a trained and experienced player, the most important thing in winning a won game is to give minimum counterplay to the opponent. How do you achieve that? Well, you have to improve your technique. In this article IM Sagar Shah tells you all about what good technique means. He shows you can example which you might be very well versed with, but he then shows a deep intricacy in it, which even many GMs may not know. If you understand this example well, you would get the gist of what good chess technique is all about!

GM Diptayan Ghosh shocks GM Karthikeyan Murali in round 3 of National Teams 2019

GM Diptayan Ghosh stole the show by defeating the in-form GM Karthikeyan Murali. When everyone's eyes were on the most anticipated match of the day between GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly and GM Dibyendu Barua, Diptayan played a fantastic game with black pieces and completely outplayed Karthikeyan. Meanwhile, veteran GM Dibyendu Barua faced GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly for the first time in Kolkata and fought valiantly for a man who plays seldom in tournaments these days. RSPB-A and Airport Authority of India lead the open section, whereas PSPB and Air India lead the Women' section at the conclusion of round 4 and 3 respectively. 39th National Team Open and 17th National Team Women 2019 witnessed a record number of teams. Total 58 teams including 44 in open and 14 in women comprising of over 285 players from across the country are participating in this edition. Top seed in both open and women's category, PSPB would be looking forward to defending their title and winning it for the second consecutive year. In round 1, Rupesh Ranjan and Vikas Kumar Dwivedi of All Bihar CA held two strong GMs Swapnil Dhopade and M S Thej Kumar respectively to a draw. In round 2, 15-year old P Yutesh of Tamil Nadu SCA defeated India's 59th GM Visakh N R of AAI and 12-year old Arya Bhakta of Alekhine Chess Club-B held the reigning Commonwealth Champion GM P Karthikeyan. Krishna Prabhakar scholarship for Vishy Anand Camp in Pune

This is the fourth scholarship by the HelpChess Initiative of ChessBase India Foundation. This scholarship is specifically instituted for a young student who hails from a weak financial background, has a FIDE rating and is keen to learn and improve at chess. The entire fee to attend the ChampCoach Vishy Anand Camp in Pune on 16th and 17th February 2019 of ₹9440 has been contributed by a samaritan named Krishna Prabhakar. It is a lifetime opportunity to learn from none other than five-time World Champion Vishy Anand without any cost. The last date for application is 9th February 2019. 

What happened when Gukesh and Pragg visited Vishy Anand's home in Chennai

5th February was a wonderful day in the life of India's youngest GM D. Gukesh. He was invited by the five-time World Champion Vishy Anand at his residence in Chennai. Gukesh, as always, was a bit shy and tensed, but once the duo sat down in Anand's training room in front of the chess board, all the shyness vanished. What did Anand and Gukesh analyze. And when later Praggnanandhaa joined in which was game that Pragg wanted to have a look at with Anand? We spoke to Gukesh after the meet and he tells us about his experience and the various positions that were analyzed in the session.

Born in 2006, they are just 12 years old, but they are young and hungry hunters! Indian talents born in 2006 are taking the chess world by storm. Believe it or not, when you search for boys born in 2006 on FIDE, out of the first 16 results that are given out by rating, nine of them are Indians! Gukesh is the most prominent name among them who became a GM at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 17 days. Rahul Gurung wins the North Eastern Championship for 2nd straight year

Last year a historic feat was achieved by Sikkim when 16-year-old Rahul Gurung of Sikkim won the 18th North East Chess Championship title making him the youngest to do so and also the first from the state. Apart from Rahul, Sikkim also had Mr. Thendup Tamang who finished as the 2nd runners-up in the same event. This year the same feat was repeated again by Rahul Gurung when he clinched the 19th North Eastern Chess Championship title by scoring 8.5/10 points and remaining unbeaten throughout the event which took place on his home soil. Anish Giri - The Indian connection

As per Wikipedia, Anish Giri is a Russian born Dutch Grandmaster. But by his name, he sounds curiously Indian. Also, he holds a connection to India keeping in mind his work with Vidit Gujrathi in recent times and he had also been a second to Viswanathan Anand during his World Championship match against Veselin Topalov in Sofia, Bulgaria. After the Tata Steel came to a close, Anish, in a brief interview with Aditya Pai, spoke about his Indian roots, his work with Anand and Vidit, the current boom in Indian chess and his prospects of playing in India.

IIFLW 2018-19 - Where quality prevailed over quantity

There are many norm tournaments taking place in India these days. However, there is a catch here. Even in the A-category events players with extremely low rating are included so that they get a chance to compete in the same events as grandmasters and best players of the country. While this is an excellent thought for the lower rated players, for the higher rated players, this turns out to be a huge bane. Making norms when facing such lower rated opponents becomes next to impossible. However, IIFLW 2018-19 decided to conduct a tournament with a difference. In the A-category, Indian players above the rating of 2100 were only allowed. The result? Five players made their norms.
