Tata Steel Chess: Giri's win stands out among the rest

The eleventh round of Tata Steel Chess saw Vidit Gujrathi score another emphatic win over a much higher rated opponent. This time, Vidit's victim was the 2817 rated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov! But despite there being this huge upset in the round, the biggest story of the day was Sam Shankland's resignation against Anish Giri. The American Grandmaster had, as Giri put it, "a hallucination of some sort" as he resigned in a drawn endgame. With this win, Giri joined Carlsen in the tournament lead. Two tournament leaders emerged in the Challengers group too after Vladislav Kovalev defeated Parham Maghsoodloo and joined Maksim Chigaev in the lead. Levan Pantsulaia wins consecutive GM tournaments in India

GM Levan Pantsulaia made a quick draw with GM Alexandr Predke in the final round and won 11th Chennai Open 2019 with a score of 8.5/10, half point ahead of a pack of five players. Few days ago he won the biggest tournament of the world - 17th Delhi Open 2019. Since Levan had already defeated GM Maxim Lugovskoy, he just needed a draw in the last round to secure the championship. GM Ivan Popov and GM Aleksej Aleksandrov secured the 2nd and 3rd position by defeating GM Maxim Lugovskoy and IM Nguyen Van Huy respectively. Raahil Mullick wins First Move Chess Club 2019 Rapid, Sameer Kathmale wins blitz

11-year old CM Raahil Mullick of Mumbai won First Move Chess Club and We One Non Rated Open Rapid 2019. Raahil finished with 7.5/9 along with three other players FM Sauravh Kherdekera, FM Mithil Ajgaonkar and IM Sameer Kathmale. However due to a better tie-break score, Raahil was declared the winner. This might well be the first time that an 11-year-old won a Mumbai rapid event! Sameer Kathmale won the Blitz event scoring 8.0/9. FM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H also finished at 8.0/9, however he was defeated by Sameer in the penultimate round resulting in Sameer clinching the Blitz title. Padmini beats Stupak and Pranesh beats Arjun in round 9 of 11th Chennai Open 2019

GM Levan Pantsulaia defeated overnight leader GM Maxim Lugovskoy in a Rook and pawn endgame which propelled Levan into sole lead by a half-point heading into the final round. IM Padmini Rout defeated GM Stupak Kirill in King's Indian Attack/Reverse Benoni, when outplayed his opponent in the middle game and gained too many pawns. Untitled Pranesh M surprised GM Erigaisi Arjun when Arjun lost his Queen after his weakened King was threatened with a checkmate. Pranesh scored his maiden IM norm with a round to spare. Tata Steel Chess: Vidit crushes Vladimir Kramnik in merely 29 moves!

The tenth round of Tata Steel Chess turned out to be a spectacle. As many as five out of the seven games in the Masters' leg were decisive. In the top matchup of the round, Magnus Carlsen managed to eke out a win in a drawn endgame against Vishy Anand to take the sole lead as Nepomniachtchi, the third co-leader, surprisingly lost to Jorden van Foreest. Vidit Gujrathi, in the meanwhile, crushed Vladimir Kramnik and became the second Indian after Anand to achieve the feat! In what was tactically the most fascinating game of the round, Richard Rapport brought down Jan Krzysztof Duda with a spectacular rook sac. In the Challengers, Maksim Chigaev also came up with a brilliant rook sacrifice to get the better of R Praggnanandhaa.

Chennai Open 2019 Round 8: Lugovskoy maintains sole lead, untitled Pranesh shocks Nitin

GM Maxim Lugovskoy maintained his half-point lead when he defeated GM Stupak Kirill and took his score to 7.5/8 at the conclusion of round 8 in 11th Chennai Open 2019. Kirill blundered in a seemingly equal Rook and minor piece endgame. Recently concluded Delhi Open 2019 winner GM Levan Pantsulaia sacrificed a piece early in the middle game for an initiative against GM Karthik Venkataraman. He endured a turmoil to convert it into a win. Levan is the only player trailing behind the leader by a half-point. 13-year old untitled Pranesh M claimed his second IM victim of the tournament when he defeated Nitin S. Tata Steel Chess: Nepo joins Anand and Carlsen at the top

The fourth round of Tata Steel Chess (Masters) saw Ian Nepomniachtchi seize his opportunity to join Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand in the lead as the two were held to modest draws. In a Petroff Defence game, Nepomniachtchi made the most of his extra space and managed to bring down the ultra-solid Vidit Gujrathi. In another fascinating endgame, Vladimir Fedoseev outsmarted Teimur Radjabov to pocked the full point after an 84 move marathon. In the Challengers', Maksim Chigaev kept his half point lead over the field with a draw against Andrey Esipenko. R Praggnanandhaa, in the meanwhile, managed to hold ground against the top seed of the tournament, GM Anton Korobov.

Chennai Open 2019 Round 7: Maxim Lugovskoy is in the sole lead

GM Maxim Lugovskoy maintained his overnight lead by a half-point when he drew with GM Luka Paichadze of Georgia in round 7 in 11th Chennai Open 2019. Delhi Open 2019 winner GM Levan Pantsulaia scored a fine win over GM Aleksej Aleksandrov. The biggest upset was caused by three IM-norm holder Saurabh Anand as he defeated GM Manik Mikulas in a game where Saurabh dominated the major part of it. Maxim is now chased by a pack of five grandmasters Luka Paichadze, Karthik Venkataraman, Stupak Kirill, Levan Pantsulaia and Alexandr Predke. All of them are at 6.0/8. Kishan Gangolli wins his sixth consecutive blind national title

He started his streak in 2012 and has won all the national A championships that have been held until 2019. Kishan Gangolli won the National A 2019 in Nagpur and became the blind national champion sixth time in a row. But this time things were much closer than usual. He had Subhendu Patra on his toes throughout the event. Finally Subhendu settled for second spot, Aryan was third and Krishna Udupa fourth. These four will represent India at the World Individual Championships in Cagliari, Italy in April 2019. Another excellent development for blind chess was the hosting of a Round Robin Women's National A for the first time in history. Suvrajit Saha wins 3rd CCPA Open 2018

IM Suvrajit Saha of Indian Railways won 3rd CCPA Open FIDE Rated 2018 at Duliajan, Assam. Suvrajit remained unbeaten and finished with a score of 8.0/10, tied for the first position with IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam. However due to a better tie-break score, Suvrajit edged ahead and became the champion. This is his second championship run in 2018, as he won Kandy Open few months ago. IM Somak Palit scored 7.5/10 and secured third runner-up position out of a pack of six players finishing with the same score. This report contains an annotated game by the champion himself. 12-year-old Aditya Mittal analyzes three exciting games from Tata Steel Chess 2019

We recently reported about a talented Indian youngster - 12-year-old Aditya Mittal, who achieved two IM norms in back to back events and increased his rating by nearly 200 Elo points from 2250 to 2450+. How did this youngster from Mumbai manage to achieve this? How was he able to make two IM norms in back to back events and make such a phenomenal rating jump? Apart from regular work on his game, Aditya indulges in a training tool which helps him become a stronger player. When a super tournament is in progress, he very closely follows each and every top level game and analyzes it in depth. Currently the Tata Steel Masters 2019 is taking place in Wijk Aan Zee and Aditya has analyzed three games in great detail.

Tata Steel Chess: Carlsen and Anand lead after round 8

Out of the five tournament leaders, only Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand retained their lead at the conclusion of the eighth round in the Masters' segment of Tata Steel Chess. Anand, as white, came up with a counter-intuitive opening novelty in the Caro-Kann Defence and went on to win a fine tactical game against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in only 29 moves! Carlsen, who was playing GM Richard Rapport with the white pieces, thoroughly outplayed his Hungarian opponent in a Sicilian Taimanov to reach 5.5/8. Maksim Chigaev continued his fine form in the Challengers and took sole lead in the tournament after his third straight win. Andrey Esipenko also climbed up to the second place on the leaderboard after defeating the Indian chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa.
