Peter Heine Nielsen on why you must learn Shogi!

Peter Heine Nielsen calls Shogi an unfound gem and chess' hidden cousin. "The game is so dynamic that every battle is like a Sicilian!", says Peter. The Japanese form of chess has not received the same amount of international recognition as our game, but is surely no less interesting. A two-hour training session is going to be held at the Hayakawa Japanse school  in Chennai on 29th of July. Commonwealth Chess Round 6: Vaibhav Suri is the sole leader

20-year-old Vaibhav Suri beat Aravindh Chithambaram to clinch the sole lead at the Commonwealth Championships 2017 going on in Delhi. Vaibhav began the game with peaceful intention with the exchange French, but Aravindh was in an ambitious mood and played really well to get a winning position. He blundered and let the win slip. Vaibhav is followed by a pack of four players on 5.0/6. With last three rounds to go, this is going to be an exciting finish. Report from Leela Ambience in Delhi.

Nearly 852 players flocked into the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in Kolkata to play in the 12th edition of Chess for Youth 2017 which was held from 6th to 10th May. The 2016 National under-15 took place four months ago in Delhi. Mitrabha Guha and Harshita Guddanti emerged as the champions in the open and girls section respectively. "Somehow under the workload of different articles and projects I wasn't able to complete this report," says IM Sagar Shah. "But the quality of the content was so high that I wanted to publish it in spite of the delay." So here you have it - the under-15 National report rich with annotated games, pictures and anecdotes. National U-11: Manish Anto surprise winner

The Suresh Agrawal Memorial 30th National Under-11 Chess Championships took place at Raipur, Chattisgarh. Around 220 youngsters from across the country in the tournament. The medal winners in this event secure a place in the Asian and World championship in the under-12 category. The Open tourney was surprisingly won by the seventeenth seed Manish Anto Cristiano of Tamil Nadu. The Girl's section was ýet-another-national-title' for Divya Deshmukh. An illustrated report.

Sharjah Masters 9th edition starts from 20th April 2026

One of the strongest classical tournaments in the chess calendar is back with its 9th edition! The Sharjah Masters 2026 is set to take place from 20th April to 30th April 2026. The last edition was won by Anish Giri (Category A), Mayank Chakraborty (Category B) and Shubham Shukla (Category C). Once again, the event will feature the same exciting categories. While the players' list is yet to be announced, we can expect some of the world’s best players fighting for the title. The total prize fund for the event is $100,000 (around Rs. 90 Lakh). It will be a nine-round Classical Swiss tournament with a time control of  90 minutes+30 seconds increment per move for the whole game. Grand Prix events at Phoenix ChessBase India Chess Club!

Phoenix ChessBase India Chess Club in Mumbai now hosts a year-long Grand Prix series, where the regular 4th Saturday monthly blitz tournaments, now award GP points to the top 10 finishers. After 11 cycles, the top 12 compete in a March 2026 Grand Prix Finale featuring higher cash rewards and a grand prize for the winner. The player with the highest total points is crowned Player of 2025-26, celebrating their consistency and strength in the club’s most competitive season yet.
