Praggnanandhaa and Aravindh Chithambaram set to battle at 6th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2025

R Praggnanandhaa and Aravindh Chithambaram will make their debut at 6th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2025 in Jermuk, Armenia. Praggnanandhaa and Aravindh are two of the highest rated players in the field. Last year Arjun won this event. Since he is not playing, a new champion is guaranteed to be crowned. The remaining eight participants are - Samuel Sevian (USA), Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB), Benjamin Gledura (HUN), Jonas Buhl Bjerre (DEN), Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM), Dmitrij Kollars (GER), Xiangyu Xu (CHN) and Aram Hakobyan (ARM). The tournament will take place at Jermuk Ashkarh Health Center in Jermuk, Armenia from 28th May to 6th June. The total prize fund of the tournament is 7450000 AMD (≈ US$ 19325). GM Nihal Sarin scored his second win in Round 2 against GM Prraneeth Vuppala at 25th Dubai Open 2025. Tactically alert Nihal spotted his opponent's mistake by calculating the winning line with ease. IM Md. Imran held the reigning National Rapid 2025 champion, GM Iniyan Pa to a draw. FM Vedant Panesar and IM Nitish Belurkar scored two big wins over GM Aditya Mittal and GM Nikolozi Kacharava (GEO) respectively. Aditya dropped a pawn in a multi-piece endgame. Nikolozi misplayed in a sharp middlegame. Former Asian Junior champion, IM Raahul V S missed a few great opportunities to win against former European Individual champion, GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB). Norway Chess Women R3: Humpy obliterates Sara, joins Anna Muzychuk in the lead

GM Koneru Humpy bounced back in the third round of 2nd Norway Chess Women 2025. She completely decimated IM Sara Khadem (ESP) who played a below par game. This win helped Humpy to catch up with the sole leader GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR). Anna made a quick draw with GM Tingjie Lei (CHN). Then she recovered well from a tough start in Armageddon to draw the game which is a win as per Armageddon rules. Both Humpy and Anna are at 6/9 each. GM R Vaishali drew the Classical against the reigning five-time Women's World Champion, GM Wenjun Ju (CHN). However, she suffered a 19-move miniature loss against Wenjun. The World Champion, D Gukesh scored his first win at 13th Norway Chess 2025 in the third round. He defeated the World no.2, Hikaru Nakamura. Gukesh refused a draw offer on move no.3 30. His opponent blundered in the following move. Wei Yi (CHN) handed the World no.1, Magnus Carlsen (NOR) his second consecutive Armageddon loss. Fabiano Caruana (USA) defeated Arjun Erigaisi to emerge sole leader 6/9. He is closely followed by Carlsen 5/9, then Nakamura and Arjun at 4.5/9 each. Mohammed Fasal V U scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win KCA's God's Own Country's 1st Below 1650 Rating Tournament 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. M Appas scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Half a dozen players scored 7.5/9. Out of them, Prathmesh Dharmadhikari was placed third due to better tie-break scores. Fasal defeated his coleader Prathmesh to become the champion. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1000000 in Category B. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹75000 and ₹50000. The three-day nine round Below 1650 tournament was organized by Kottayam Chess Academy from 1st to 3rd May 2025 at Aithousa Convention Centre in Kottayam, Kerala. Top seed, GM Nihal Sarin made a winning start at 25th Dubai Open 2025 Category A (>2300). Nihal defeated one of the latest IMs of India - Akshay Borgaonkar. IM Jubin Jimmy and IM Neelash Saha held second and third seeded - GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) and GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) respectively to a draw each. Neelash probably had some chances in the endgame but it was not easy for a human to convert into a full point. FM Sahib Singh played a solid draw against GM Momchil Petkov (BUL). GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated GM Koneru Humpy to emerge early sole leader at 2nd Norway Chess Women 2025. Humpy made a couple of big mistakes in the major piece endgame. Her first mistake could have ended the game much earlier. However, Anna missed it and the endgame got prolonged. GM R Vaishali drew her Classical game agianst GM Tingjie Lei (CHN). She was losing in Armageddon. However, Tingjie repeated moves as a draw with black pieces in Armageddon equals a win. Norway Chess R2: Arjun Erigaisi wins a back and forth battle against the World Champion

Arjun Erigaisi defeated D Gukesh in the second round of 13th Norway Chess 2025. The World Champion made multiple mistakes and he also had almost the equal number of chances to get back in the game. He almost managed to escape with a draw in the knight vs bishop endgame until he blundered and could not recover his opponent's doubled passed pawns. Fabiano Caruana (USA) scored the only other Classical win of the round over Wei Yi (CHN). Hikaru Nakamura (USA) drew the Classical against Magnus Carlsen (NOR). Then won a rollercoaster Armageddon which could have gone either player's way. Both Arjun and Nakamura are at 4.5/6 each, followed by Carlsen 4/6. Five players - Vigneshwaran S, Tarun V, Yashwant B, Shashveen A K and Sathish Chandra G scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to sixth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400001. The top three prizes were ₹50001, ₹40000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. Koneru Humpy defeated R Vaishali in the first round of 2nd Norway Chess Women 2025. The queen and bishop vs queen and knight endgame would have ended in a draw if there were an increment from move no.1. However, Vaishali blundered into a checkmate combination in time trouble and lost the game. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) had a small advantage in the Classical game against IM Sara Khadem (ESP). It ended in a draw. The in-form GM won Armageddon against the IM. The All-Chinese clash between Tingjie Lei and Wenjun Ju went to Armageddon where the former prolonged her win against the five-time Women's World Champion. Arjun Erigaisi drew the Classical game against Wei Yi (CHN). However, he won Armageddon to win the match in Round 1 of 13th Norway Chess 2025. Fabiano Caruana (USA) blundered in time trouble in a bishop and knight vs double knight endgame. Hikaru Nakamura (USA) had no trouble capitalizing on his opportunity. The highly anticipated clash between Magnus Carlsen (NOR) and D Gukesh was an exciting battle. Gukesh played bravely but only in the time trouble he went wrong in a knight down queen and rook endgame. An incorrect check turned the table completely in favor of the World no.1. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Viresh defeated both runners-up, Neelash and Atharva in Round 6 and 5 respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹70000, ₹50000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each. Anish Giri convincingly clinches 8th Sharjah Masters

GM Anish Giri (NED) defeated GM Aditya Mittal to win 8th Sharjah Masters 2025 convincingly. In a relatively balanced rook endgame, Anish pushed for a win as he had an extra passed pawn. It turned out in his favor as his opponent eventually faltered. GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) defeated the newly crowned Asian Individual 2025 champion, GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) to secure second place. GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) drew with GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) to finish third. The total prize fund of the tournament is more than $73000, Masters A had $58600. The 13th edition of Norway Chess starts today, Monday 26th May 2025. It will go on till Friday 6th June. For the second year in-a-row, there will be a Women's tournament with an equal number of players, rounds, same format at the same playing hall. The six-player double round-robin, world's strongest tournament will be played in both Open and Women's event. Each draw will be resolved by Armaggedon. Both reigning World Champions - D Gukesh and Wenjun Ju (CHN) will be seen in action along with World no.1 - Magnus Carlsen.
