Harikrishna speaks about his win over Levon Aronian

In the sixth round of the Geneva Grand Prix, India's Pentala Harikrishna was pitted against the in-form Levon Aronian. The Armenian had recently won the Norway Chess and had completely outplayed Magnus Carlsen. Hari also had the black pieces. But the Indian player was undeterred. He played some fantastic chess to outplay his 2800+ opponent. In this interview with Sagar Shah, Hari sheds light on this victory, what was going through his head before, during and after the game. GM Deep Sengupta & GM R R Laxman will be the top seed in National Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2017 respectively. The Championship will take place from 1st – 4th August 2017 in Bhawanipur Education Society College, Kolkata, West Bengal. The Total Cash Prize for National Rapid is ₹175000 and for National Blitz ₹75000. What is very interesting is that the tournament has a zero tolerance rule, in a city that is known for its traffic and the round begins at 9 a.m. You have to be fast off the board as well!

World Team dominates the Match of Millennials

It was a great effort by the Rex Sinquefield, and the Saint Louis Chess Club to organize such a novel match and spend US $30,000 for world's most talented youngsters. It ended in a thumping win for the world team as they beat their USA counterparts by a score of 31.5-17.5. However, what was more important was the learning experience involved in the process. Both the Indian youngsters Praggnanandhaa and Aryan Chopra performed well and contributed towards the victory of the world team. Bhakti Kulkarni is the 44th National Women Challengers Champion!

9.5 points in the last ten rounds! That's what Bhakti managed to achieve and with it become the champion of the 44th National Challengers 2017! The second place was taken by Mary Ann Gomes and Soumya Swaminathan finished third. Top eight players qualify for National Premier. Apart from top three, they include Nandhidhaa P.V., Bala Kannamma, Kiran Manisha Mohanty, Parnali Dharia and S. Meenakshi. Women Challengers 2017 Round 10: Huge games, huge results!

A pawn was hanging on a5. It looked very juicy, but was poisonous. Soumya couldn't hold herself back and went to grab it, only to realize that it was a trap set up by her opponent Bhakti Kulkarni. The queen was trapped and Bhakti leads the tournament with 8.5/10. With the final round to go, the contest for the eight qualifying spots at the tournament has become intense. While Bhakti and Mary indulge in the title fight, the rest of the girls have to ensure a good final round result to qualify for the national premier. Penultimate report from Mysore.

Women Challengers 2017 Round 9: Soumya and Bhakti set up title clash

C. Lakshmi's dream run at the 44th National Challengers 2017 was brought to a halt by WGM Bhakti Kulkarni ater the latter scored a marathon victory with the black pieces. On the second board Soumya Swaminathan beat P.V. Nandhidhaa. This meant that Bhakti and Soumya now jointly lead the tournament with 7.5/9. You can say that the tenth round clash between the two is the most important game of the entire tournament. The winner most certainly has great chances of becoming the champion. Mary Ann Gomes is the only player on 7 points, followed by ten participants on 6.5.

Yet another interesting new event put on by the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, the Match of the Millennials sees eight young American players face off against some of the best juniors from around the world. World Junior Champion Jeffery Xiong leads the USA squad, and Haik Martirosyan from Armenia heads the World team. It's great pride for Indian fans that two of our players Aryan Chopra and R. Praggnanandhaa were selected for this event to represent the world team. We bring you the report for day one.

National under-25 at Port Blair: An experience of a lifetime

National Under-25 Championships was held within the precincts of the picturesque Andaman and Nicobar Islands this year. The Andaman and Nicobar Chess Association had been keen on hosting the event for quite some time, but did it have resources to hold such an important event? Women Challengers 2017 Round 8: Bhakti makes a scintillating comeback!

You remember that on the first day of the National Women Challengers 2017 we published the report entitled "1485 rated player beats 2016 Asian Champion!" Well, that Asian Champion not only put the loss behind her, but has scored 6.5 points in the last seven rounds. Bhakti Kulkarni joined top seed Soumya Swaminathan and C. Lakshmi as the leader after eight rounds. Soumya wasn't able to break through the defences of Lakshmi, while Bhakti managed to score a fine win over Nisha Mohota. Analysis of the two crucial games. 

A world class chess institute set up in Malaysia

The Institute of Chess Excellence (ICE) has been set up in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. With the support of the newly elected Malaysian Chess President it has become the national chess academy of the country. World class facilities exist at the Institute and regular training sessions along with tournaments on a monthly basis have been planned. ICE in Malaysia is a pilot project of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF). If this turns out to be a successful experiment, the ACF would like to set up similar institutes all over Asia.

After seven rounds at the National Women's Challengers 2017 we have one expected leader and one completely unexpected! Top seeded Soumya Swaminathan is on 6.0/7 and she is joined by 30th seed of the event Laskhmi C. The girl from Tamil Nadu is already gaining 117 Elo points! Mind boggling indeed. The experienced players are back at the top. Kiran, Manisha Mohanty, Nisha Mohota, Mary Ann Gomes, Bhakti Kulkarni and Meenakshi.S are all on 5.5/7. After announcing the "Gary Kasparov Returns" U-2200 Online Blitz Tournament, 114 chess enthusiasts have given their entries to participate in the online tournament. The event started at 8 pm, without any delay. Fifteen-year-old  Aakash Dalvi of Maharashtra scored 8.5 out of 9 points to secure the first place. The final standings will be published within a week after scanning all the games and ensuring that no cheating was done.
