FIDE World Teams Round 7: Adhiban! Adhiban!

The thing about champions is that they never ever fail to make a comeback. After a tough loss against Yilmaz, Adhiban found himself facing a stronger opponent in the seventh round in the form of Anton Korobov. He played a fine game to beat his Ukrainian opponent and give India the much needed 2.5-1.5 victory. In the women's section we were trailing 2-1 in the match against China, but Padmini showed her class, and beat Guo Qi in an equal endgame to level the scores. Analysis of both these games, and a small flashback to Baku 2016.

At halfway India is placed fourth in IBCA Olympiad 2017

The Indian team at the IBCA Olympiad for the blind and visually impaired began as the 19th seed. But the team has performed admirably and is currently in the fourth position after five rounds. Soundarya Kumar Pradhan and Kishan Gangolli have been the backbone of the team scoring crucial wins to help India win against Montenegro and Azerbaijan in rounds four and five. World Teams R06: Deadlock with Turkey

It was a thrilling round against Turkey. The Indian team was so close to winning. However, in the end it was just a draw with one win exchanged and two draws. Sasikiran was our man of the match as he defeated Emre Can. Adhiban lost to Yilmaz. Negi was close to winning, but blundered and very nearly lost. In the end he and Vidit drew. In the women's section Indians were beaten comprehensively by the Russians with a score of 3-1. In this report we have game analysis of all the eight encounters and an important lesson on the rule of Photographic draw.

Ten best teams in Open and Women section are fighting it out against each other for the title of the top chess playing nation in the world. Russia is the top seed in women's section and China in the open. India is the fourth seed in Open and fifth in women. World Teams R05: Egypt gives India a scare!

After a thumping win against USA in round four, it was expected that India would breeze through their match against Egypt. However, it was far from easy. Adhiban was the only winner giving us a 2.5-1.5 victory. In quite a few of the games we were in grave trouble. In the women's section Tania, Eesha and Vijayalakshmi scored wins to give us a three point lead. The surprise of the day was Harika's loss to a 2141 opponent Wafa Shrouk. Although the matches were tough, no damage was done! We have the game analysis as well as Team India wishing a happy International Yoga Day from Khanty Mansiysk.

India on 100% at the 15th IBCA Olympiad

15th Chess Olympiad for Blind and visually impaired chess players is being organised by International Braille Chess Association (IBCA) in Macedonia from 18 to 29 June 2017. 27 countries have participated in this event. India is the 19th seed but have started with a bang. In the first round we beat sixth seeds Germany with a score of 2.5-1.5 and in the second round we were able to blank Kosovo 4-0. With 4.0/4 we are right on the top board facing the top seeds Russia in the third round.

World Teams R04: Indian explosion in Khanty Mansiysk

The Indian men's team showed what they are really capable of. They ruthlessly demolished USA 3.5-0.5. Adhiban, Sasikiran, Negi scored wins over Akobian, Robson and Xiong. Vidit drew his game against Onischuk. This was the second consecutive win for the men's team. The women's team also delivered. After the scores tied at 1.5-1.5, Padmini Rout rose to the occasion and scored a fine win to give India a 2.5-1.5 victory over Poland. We have all the four games annotated in depth with key positions and explanations.

World Teams R03: The tale of two Hedgehogs!

The Indian men's team had their first victory of the event in the third round as they overcame stiff resistance from the Belarus team. It was the man out of form Adhiban Baskaran, who played a messy yet brilliant game to beat Kovalev and give India 2.5-1.5 win. In the women's section India lost to Ukraine 1.5-2.5. Three games ended in draws and all hinged on Tania's game. She lost to Gaponenko. The two decisive games of the round happened in the Hedgehog opening and we take a detailed look at that structure in this article.

World Teams R02: Tania powers team India to a win over USA

The Indian team had something to cheer in the second round of the World Team Championship. The eves were able to get the better of USA with a score of 2.5-1.5. Tania Sachdev provided the crucial win, in a match that could have gone either way. The men's team lost their second match in a row, this time to China. Adhiban lost to Yu Yangyi, while the other three boards ended in a draw. It was a good fight, but the Chinese team played better. Game analysis and critical positions of round two.

5th Edition Open Blitz at Bangalore

Bangalore witnessed one of the strong Blitz Chess tournament in recent days when two Ekalavya Awardee (Yashas D and Sriram Sarja both from Shimoga), Strong Players from Karnataka, Millionaire Edition in Las Vegas 2015 U2200 Winner (Prachura P P) and 11 times State Champion took part in 5th Edition of OPEN BLITZ Chess tournament organized by Universal Chess Academy (R) along with Rainbow Club Kidz Library, Malleswaram, Bangalore. The tournament was held at Shri. R. Gundu Rao Sports Complex, Sirur Park Playground, Sheshadripuram, Bangalore on 28th May 2017.

World Teams R01: Viji's unbelievable miss

Team tournaments are well known for their unusual outcomes. The Indian team tasted that on the first day of the World Team Championship 2017. While the men lost to Poland with a margin of 2.5-1.5, the women drew their round against Georgia. On paper Georgia was the higher seed, but India was completely winning with Viji being a piece up. She blundered and lost. We have the critical moments of all decisive games, and also a very interesting new idea used by Vidit to beat Wojtaszek.

Norway R09: Levon Aronian wins the tournament; Anand finishes with 4.0/9

The strongest tournament of the year 2017, Norway Chess came to an end. Levon Aronian displayed some fantastic chess to not only win the tournament, but also gain 16 Elo points and propel himself to world number four. Anand had to be content with the eighth spot with 4.0/9. Perhaps, this was one of the worst tournament for World Champion Magnus Carlsen who finished ninth.
