Vishy Anand helps Baden Baden win Bundesliga 2016-17

It's been nearly 15 years since Vishy Anand has been playing for the Baden Baden team in the German Bundesliga. Sixteen teams fight against each other in the strongest chess league event in a round robin format. Fifteen rounds are spread out over a period of seven months from October to April. Vishy Anand played only four games for Baden Baden this season. He scored 3.0/4. On 29th and 30th April rounds 13 and 14 were held and Vishy managed to score 1.5/2 with a draw against Robert Ruck and a win against Erwin l'Ami. Deep analysis of these highly interesting battles.

With 3.5/9 - seven draws and two losses, one might feel that Harikrishna had a dismal event at the Gashimov Memorial in Shamkir. Yes, it's true that he finished at the bottom of the table. But have a look at this games. He drew all his games from round five to nine against world class opposition. And in some of the games Hari was very close to breaking through. And that's why the title of this article - in some other tournament and on some other day with the same level of play Hari would have finished much higher, but in Shamkir it was a share of the last spot.

Sethuraman finishes second at the BRICS Masters Rapid

Such instances are common, but what is rare is the ability to fight back after such a disastrous first round. Sethuraman did exactly that. After a painful loss to Yu Yangyi at the start of the tournament, he steadied his ship and finished second at this strong BRICS Masters rapid event held in China. Yu Yangyi was the champion. Ganguly was the other Indian participant and in the combined standings India took the bronze.

Anish Giri managed to win the event with a score on 8.5/10. Praggnanandhaa in Reyk - the boy is turning into a man!

With 2.5/4, Praggnanandhaa decided to take things more seriously. He scored two wins against players rated 2200 and then was up against four times USSR champion GM Alexander Beliavsky. Pragga dominated throughout the game but had to settle for a draw towards the end. The big breakthrough occurred in the eighth round when the 11-year-old put up a brilliant defensive effort to down Gawain Jones. Abhijeet Gupta and Vidit Gujrathi were up against each other and drew their game.
