Over the years, India has witnessed a general increase in the standard of tournaments organized in the Open circuit. To give companionship to the bunch of norm events in the calendar are tournaments like the National Challengers Championship, the 2015 edition of which was widely accepted as one of the best organized. The 4th Keshabananda Memorial though is in a league of its own. IM Swapnil Dhopade of Maharashtra won this year’s fourth edition, his second straight tournament victory after winning the National Challengers barely a fortnight ago.
Sethuraman was the last Indian standing at the World Cup 2015. After he lost the first round against Mamedyarov he was surely under a lot of pressure. In the second game of the match, the Indian tried his best to put maximum pressure on his opponent, but Mamedyarov did not flinch, held on and made a draw to advance to the fourth round.
When a top player gets a position that he likes it is very difficult to stop him. This is something that Sethuraman experienced in his first game of the round three at the World Cup 2015 against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. The Azeri player struck the first blow and now leads the two game match with a score of 1-0.
After an intense match against Harikrishna we contacted Sethuraman through Skype and sent him a few questions to be answered for our readers. The diligent man that he is, Sethuraman immediately sent us all his answers and explained about how he was able to beat one of the strongest chess players in the world.
The underdog of the match S.P.Sethuraman was able to rise up to the occasion and beat his much higher rated opponent Pentala Harikrishna to advance to the third round of the World Cup 2015. After this match, Sethuraman is the only Indian left in the field and he will face the winner of the Mamedyarov-Hou Yifan match.
Harikrishna and Sethuraman faced off against each other in the second round of the World Cup 2015. It was a tense game in the Berlin where the higher rated Hari held the advantage for majority of the game. Sethuraman defended tenaciously and was able to hold the draw. It was an exciting first game between the two Indian players.
Tie-breaks are always exciting. In the first round tie breaks the match between Sargissian and Bartel went right upto the armageddon stage. Sargissian finally won! Vidit and Adhiban both were eliminated by their opponents Bruzon and Fedoseev in first two rapid games itself.
Two Indians had to pack their bags and leave Baku - Lalith Babu and Surya Shekhar Ganguly. Two of them advanced to the round two Harikrishna and Sethuraman, while Adhiban and Vidit will fight it out in the tie-breaks tomorrow against Fedoseev and Bruzon respectively.
