3rd President Cup R1-6: Neelash beats Bernadskiy, joins the five-way lead with Nihal and Sankalp

IM Neelash Saha, GM Nihal Sarin and GM Sankalp Gupta are in a five-way lead 5/6 at 3rd President Cup 2024. IM Ortik Nigmatov (UZB) and GM Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) are the remaining two leaders. Top seed, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) is at 4.5/6. Neelash defeated two GMs in consecutive rounds, Timur Gareyev in Round 5 and Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) in Round 6. Sankalp got the better of his compatriot, GM Karthikeyan Murali. Both Bernadskiy and Karthikeyan sacrificed material aiming to launch an attack. However, they both were unsuccessful against Neelash and Sankalp respectively. World Championship Game 2: Gukesh bounces back with a 23-move solid draw

The question on everyone's mind was, how will Gukesh fare in the second game after suffering a loss? He answered it quite well by playing a solid draw. At the post-game press conference he mentioned that, "We all knew that things can happen. Losing is just part of the game. So it was not a shock. We were prepared..." He is definitely strong mentally. That was evident both on the board and off it. He also added that, "Today was a good day and hopefully we will have many more good days coming." The teenager is definitely poised to bring some exciting games and a lot of determination in the next few games as he is facing the best version of the world champion, Ding Liren, which the world knew and wanted to see. Young Minds, Sharp Moves: 1st World Cadets Chess Solving Championship

On the 21st of November, Montesilvano, Italy, hosted the inaugural World Cadets Chess Solving Championship. Running concurrently with the World Cadets Chess Championships 2024, this represented an important milestone in FIDE's and the World Federation for Chess Composition's mission to popularise chess-solving by incorporating it into mainstream tournaments. The championship comprised three age-based categories: under 8, 10, and 12, with six chess positions set for each category to be solved within one hour. With this report, discover the talented young solvers who claimed top honours and delve into some of the intriguing puzzles that pushed their strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities to the limit.

John Veny Akkarakaran wins YMCA 4th Chessmii Rapid Rating Open 2024

FM John Veny Akkarakaran, FM Pranav K P and Genivan Genkeswaran (MAS) scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 each at YMCA 4th Chessmii Rapid Rating Open 2024. The top seed, John won the tournament on tie-breaks, Pranav and Genivan secured second and third place respectively. The total prize fund was ₹500000 and there were 201 prizes. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The one-day rapid rating tournament was organized by YMCA Ernakulam Sub Region and Chessmii.com at YMCA Hall, Thottumugham in Ernakulam, Kerala on 17th November 2024. Arnav Mahesh Koli dominates 1st SVIS Rating Open 2024

Arnav Mahesh Koli scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st SVIS Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Sharsha Backer scored sole 8/9. He also remained undefeated and secured second place. Om Gada finished third scoring 7.5/9. The total prize fund was ₹501000. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹31000 and ₹21000 along with a trophy each. The six-day rating open tournament was organized by Ashtavinayak Group and ChessKraft Academy at Swami Vivekanand International School, Kandivali in Mumbai, Maharashtra from 5th to 10th November 2024. World Championship Game 1: Gukesh flies too close to the sun

For the first time in 14 years, a FIDE World Championship Match started with a decisive result. Back in 2010, Vishy Anand lost the first game to Veselin Topalov (BUL). He immediately bounced back in the second game. D Gukesh also had a similar start with a loss in the first game against the reigning world champion, Ding Liren (CHN).The difference is the colors are reversed. Still Gukesh is calm and composed, he doesn't get rattled easily. In the first game, he tried to go for the maximum and had to pay a heavy price for it. Best games of the 49th National Sub-Junior Chess Champions

Ilamparthi A R and Prishita Gupta recently emerged as champions in the Open and Girls' sections, respectively, at the 49th National Sub-Junior Chess Championship. Ethan Vaz and Ashita Jain stood 2nd while Prathamesh Sherla and Saparya Ghosh stood 3rd in their respective section. The tournament was held from 3rd November to 11th November at Adhiyamaan College of Engineering, Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Ananthi Chess Academy and Viyugam Chess Academy were the organizers of this event. Agnivo Chakraborty dominates Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 Under-19 Rapid

Agnivo Chakraborty scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 All India Under-19 Rapid. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Soham Bhattacharyya and IM Mayank Chakraborty scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Agnivo defeated the defending champion and eventual runner-up, Soham in the penultimate round, and second runner-up, IM Mayank in Round 6. The total prize fund was ₹51000 + trophies. The top three prizes were doubled since last year, ₹10000 + trophy, ₹6000 and ₹4000 each respectively. This was the first time this event became an All India event from All Bengal. World Cadet Chess Championship: Bocelli's Surprise Visit Adds Magic as Medal Races Heat Up

It’s not every day that the worlds of music and chess intersect, and to witness a global icon like Andrea Bocelli gracing the World Cadet Chess Championship 2024 was a moment to remember. The legendary Italian tenor, whose music has touched hearts worldwide, made a surprise appearance at the tournament during Round 7. Not only did Bocelli make his presence known, but he also had the honor of playing the opening move in the Under 12 section, adding an unforgettable touch to the event. His arrival was met with admiration, as many people were eager just to have the chance to see him in person. As for the results, the competition remains fierce with only three rounds left to determine the final medalists. In the Under 8 Girls, the battle for the lead continues between Chen Zhihan and Xin Stella. In the Under 8 Open, Linyuan of the USA has taken the lead, while Advik Amit Agrawal from India is making strong strides in the Under 10 Boys. December 2024 and January 2025 brings five GM tournaments in India

Five GM tournaments are scheduled in India from 2nd December 2024 to 19th January 2025. They will take place in Bhubaneswar, Madurai, Chennai and Goa respectively. Those who are looking for opportunities to score norms, increase their rating and/or claim huge prizes should chalk out their plan if they have not already. 15th KIIT International Chess Festival will take place from 2nd to 9th December, Odisha Open from 15th to 22nd December, 4th Athens of the East GM tournament from 24th to 31st December, 15th Chennai GM Open from 2nd to 9th January 2025 and Late Shri Manohar Parrikar Goa GM Tournament from 11th to 19th January 2025. FIDE World Championship 2024: Gukesh draws White in the first game

The second event of the FIDE World Championship Match 2024 was the opening ceremony. The magnificent Capitol Theatre was packed to the brim with more than 400 guests. It is an architectural and lifestyle gem in the heart of Singapore's civic and cultural district, hosted the festivities. The Draw of Lots witnessed a beautiful technological display where both players participated. The end result as shown in the cover picture revealed Gukesh to have the white pieces in the first game.
