Hongchi Peng prevails at 17th Penang Heritage City Open 2025, Suyog Wagh second

Hongchi Peng (CHN) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 17th Penang Heritage City Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM Suyog Wagh scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Suyog drew against the eventual champion in the fourth round. Six players scored 6.5/9 each. Out of them, IM Konstantin Sek was placed third. The top three prizes were RM 8000, 5000 and 3000 in the Open section. Suyog received ≈₹111100. IM Karthik Rajaa is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. A total of 96 players including 2 GMs, 11 IMs and a WIM took part in the Open section from 17 countries across the world including Malaysia. The six-day nine-round Swiss league Rating tournament was organized by Penang Chess Association at Wesley Methodist School in Penang, Malaysia from 18th to 23rd December 2025. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
