57th Biel GMT: R Praggnanandhaa wins Accentus Chess960

R Praggnanandhaa and Haik Martirosyan (ARM) scored 5/7 each at Accentus Chess960, the opening event of 57th Biel International Chess Festival 2024 GMT. Praggnanandhaa won the event as he had defeated Haik in the third round. Vincent Keymer (GER) scored 4.5/7 to secure third place. The standings of this event will be used as a tie-break if required after the conclusion of the Grandmaster Triathlon (GMT). GM Alexander Donchenko (GER) won the Challengers event 5.5/7. GM Jonas Buhl Bjerre (DEN) secured second place. GM Salem Saleh (UAE) finished third 3/7. GM R Vaishali was placed fourth 2/7. The Rapid event will start today, Sunday 14th July. The legend of Bangladesh Chess - Ziaur Rahman (1974-2024)

Ziaur Rahman, the 2nd grandmaster of Bangladesh and the player to have reached the highest Elo by a Bangladeshi (2570) passed away on 5th of July while playing a game of chess at the Bangladesh National Championships 2024. He suffered a heart attack and collapsed to the ground. Ziaur was just 50 years old. In this article we look back at his life and remember what a gem of a person he was both on and off the board and we also have heartfelt messages from some of the top Indian GMs.

Fabiano Caruana tops SuperUnited Rapid 2024, extends his sole lead by three points

Fabiano Caruana (USA) won all three games on the third day to finish at the top of SuperUnited Rapid 2024. He has increased his sole lead by three points. D Gukesh had a good chance in the queen and minor piece endgame against Caruana. However, his cautious approach made him miss the opportunity. Caruana then defeated Anish Giri (NED) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) to finish the rapid portion scoring 15/18. Wesley So (USA) and Levon Aronian (USA) are at second and third position scoring 12/18 and 11/18 each respectively. Gukesh scored his lone win of the day against Ivan Saric (CRO). Vidit Gujrathi secured his first victory of the event against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). He blundered in the final round against Ian Nepomniachtchi at a moment where he could have gained a substantial advantage. Soram Rahul Singh triumphs at 2nd Karimganj Rating Open 2024

Soram Rahul Singh scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 to win 2nd Karimganj Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Syed Mahfuzur Rahman scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Top seed Kushal O and Snehaal Roy scored 7.5/10 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Soram drew with the eventual runner-up Mahfuzur and defeated the second runner-up, Kushal. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹230000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The tournament was organized by Karimganj District Chess Association at DSA Karimganj Indoor Stadium in Karimganj, Assam from 22nd to 27th June 2024. SuperUnited Rapid 2024 R4-6: Gukesh bounces back strong by winning against MVL and Nepomniachtchi

D Gukesh made a strong comeback on the second day of Grand Chess Tour SuperUnited Rapid 2024. He started by defeating the previous day leader, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). The former World Blitz champion, blundered a mate in four which cost him the game. In Round 5, Gukesh had a topsy-turvy game against Vidit Gujrathi. It could have gone either player's way. However, it ended in a draw by perpetual check. In Round 6, Gukesh defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi by doing a beautiful king shuffle from queenside to the kingside. Fabiano Caruana (USA) emerged sole leader 9/12. Wesley So (USA) is at 8/12. They are followed by Gukesh, MVL and Alireza Firouzja (FRA) at 7/12. Both Gukesh and Caruana scored 5/6 on day two. Sharan Rao dominates Hubli Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win All India Rapid Rating Open 2024 at Hubli, Karnataka. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Prajwal P Shet and CM Soham Datar scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Sharan defeated India's 85th and latest GM P Shyam Nikhil in the final round to become the champion. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹35000 + trophy, ₹25000 + trophy and ₹20000 each. This was Sharan's third tournament triumph of the month and fifth of the year. He also won one more rating tournament in the same month. The tournament was organized by KLE Technological University, Hubbali, Rotary Club of Hubli North and Dharwad District Chess Association at Dr. Prabhakar Kore Indoor Sports Arena, KLE Technological University in Hubbali, Karnataka on 22nd and 23rd June 2024.

Sandeep Santhosh wins 4th ISC Triumph Cup Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024

Sandeep Santhosh, Christy George and Anecx Kanjiravila B C scored 8/9 each at 4th ISC Triumph Cup Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024. Sandeep won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Christy and Anecx were placed second and third respectively. Only Sandeep remained undefeated out of the them. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹499999. The top three prizes were ₹51000 + trophy, ₹45000 and ₹35000 each. The tournament was held from 15th to 17th June at Sri Swathi Thirunal College of Music, Thycaud in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was organized by International School of Chess Foundation. Vidit Gujrathi had a tough day at Grand Chess Tour SuperUnited Rapid 2024. He lost all three of his games against Fabiano Caruana (USA), Levon Aronian (USA) and Ivan Saric (CRO). It was not an easy day for D Gukesh either. He mistimed an exchange in the first round against Wesley So (USA) in the endgame. He drew the second round against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). In his last round of the day, the teenager missed a winning opportunity versus Anish Giri (NED). The game ended in a draw after 116 moves. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) emerged early sole leader 5/6. 57th Biel Chess Festival starts this Saturday

The 57th edition of Biel Chess Festival begins this Saturday and will once again attract chess enthusiasts from all over the world to the watchmaking metropolis. There will now be two invitational tournaments for the elite: the GMT-Masters and the GMT-Challengers, which will each be contested by six players. The field of participants will be led by the world number 8, Praggnanandhaa from India. There is also a whole range of tournaments on the programme for amateurs, including a new one-week tournament in the morning and the physicians' tournament. Gukesh and Vidit set to face World's best at SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2024

The third event of the Grand Chess Tour 2024 season is SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz. The defending champion, Magnus Carlsen (NOR) had to regretfully withdraw due to an urgent family matter. Levon Aronian (USA) was named as his replacement. D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi will be the two Indians in the lineup. They will face Ian Nepomniachtchi, Aronian, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA), Fabiano Caruana (USA), Alireza Firouzja (FRA), Wesley So (USA), Anish Giri (NED) and Ivan Saric (CRO).
