Gran Hotel Bali 2023: Mitrabha Guha clinches Blitz Nocturno, third in Open A, Sham R wins Aficionados B

GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win XIV Gran Hotel Bali Blitz Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Xulio Del Prado Rodriguez (ESP), GM Rustam Khusnutdinov (KAZ), FM Felix-Antonio Illinca (ROU) and Francisco Javier Barranco Cara (ESP) scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to fifth place respectively. This was Mitrabha's ninth tournament triumph of the year. GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM) won the Open A event scoring 8/9 and remained undefeated. Seven players scored 7/9 each. Out of them, GM Evgeny Zanan (ISR) and Mitrabha secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Sham R won the Aficionados B (Below 2000) tournament. He scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win the tournament. Miquel Fabre Massana (ESP) and Jamison Edrich Kao (HKG) scored 7.5/9 each to be placed second and third respectively. Photos: Official site

The Chess-Tech Startup CircleChess recently organized an Online “Bullet Bash” chess tournament on Lichess.org. The event gained attention due to its substantial total prize fund of 1 lakh INR, perhaps the largest ever for an online bullet tournament in India. With a ₹25,000 prize for the winner and relentlessly strong competition, it was a true test of skill in a high-stakes environment. All in all, the spectacle was an hour of fast- paced, unforgiving games of chess. Chennai Grand Masters 2023 R1: Harikrishna and Eljanov strike

Chennai Grand Masters 2023 is off to a splendid start. Just when it seemed like the first round will end up being victorless, Pentala Harikrishna and Pavel Eljanov (UKR) proved those predictions wrong. Arjun Erigaisi made a significant mistake early in the game. It made him defend the better part of the battle. Eventually he missed his final opportunity to salvage a half point which cost him the game. Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) made a huge blunder in a rook and two pawns endgame which was seemingly heading towards a draw. The other two games between Levon Aronian (USA) and D Gukesh, and Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) and Alexandr Predke (SRB). Round 2 starts tomorrow at 3 p.m. IST. Vidit Gujrathi clinches 9th Gashimov Memorial 2023 after an exciting chase, Arjun Erigaisi second

Vidit Gujrathi is on a roll. After winning FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 and securing a spot in the Candidates 2024, he won the 33rd PSPB Inter Petroleum Individual Rapid 2023. The 9th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2023 is his third consecutive individual tournament triumph. Despite not finishing first in either Rapid or Blitz, Vidit managed to win the entire event. That speaks volumes about the strength of the tournament. He scored 22/36, 10/18 in Rapid and 12/18 in Blitz, finishing a half point ahead of Arjun Erigaisi 21.5/36. Fujairah Chess & Culture Club set to organise the 5th Fujairah Endurance Chess Solving Championship with a whopping prize fund of 35,500$

On the 20th and 21st of January 2024, the Fujairah Chess and Culture Club in Fujairah City, UAE, is organising the 5th Endurance Blitz tournament and the 20th International Solving Contest, respectively. Together named the Fujairah Endurance Chess Solving Championship, the two-day meet has instituted a mammoth prize pool of 35,500 US dollars, more than half of which will go to the winners of its latter event, setting an unprecedented benchmark in the history of chess-solving competitions. The average rating of the tournament is a massive 2711 and players who are taking part are D. Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Levon Aronian, Parham Maghsoodloo, Sanan Sjugirov, P. Harikrishna, Alexandr Predke and Pavel Eljanov. The event is happening at the Leela Palace hotel in Chennai and spectators are allowed each day on first come first serve basis. Chennai Grand Masters is the strongest ever classical super tournament to take place in India. The average rating of the tournament is 2711. Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh will be battling against Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) for an improvement in the FIDE Circuit. They will also face Levon Aronian (USA), Sanan Sjugirov (HUN), Pentala Harikrishna, Pavel Eljanov (UKR) and Alexandr Predke (SRB). The permutation and combinations related to FIDE Circuit was mentioned in an earlier article. The event is sponsored and supported by Tamil Nadu Government and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. The total prize fund is ₹5000000 (US$ 60000). Khelo Chess India Grand Finale - Angela wins Rapid, Saurabh Blitz

The Annual finale of the Khelo Chess India tournament organized by ChessBase India, "Sage Sports Academy Rapid and Blitz took place this Sunday! The Rapid Chess tournament was won by WIM Angela Franco from Colombia, and Saurabh Choubey from Madhya Pradesh bagged the Blitz Chess tournament. This event was organized on 10th December at the Sage International School, Kolar, Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. The Khelo Chess India tournaments, which started in January 2023, have completed 23 events so far. A total prize fund of Rs 61,000 was kept in this competition, of which Rs 50,000 was kept for the rapid tournament and Rs 11,000 was kept for the blitz tournament. Vikramaditya Kulkarni dominates 8th Kurukshetra Rating Open 2023

IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 8th Kurukshetra Rating Open 2023. He finished a staggering one and a half points ahead of the field. Six players - Dangmei Bosco, Silkam Sangma, Soram Rahul Singh, Cheniram Pegu, Neelabh Jyoti Borthakur and Abhash Roimya Saikia scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and seventh respectively. Abhash was the youngest finisher among the top ten.  The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹359500. The top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹30000 and ₹22000 along with a trophy each respectively. It's the last month of the year but we are ending the chess calendar of events on Indian soil with a bang! From 15th to 21st of December the first ever super tournament of the country is going to be held in Chennai India. It is sponsored and supported by the Tamil Nadu Government and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and organized by MGD1, NODWIN Gaming and ChessBase India. It's the strongest ever classical super tournament on Indian soil with a rating average of 2711. The main attraction of the event will be the two Indian youngsters Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi trying to take on some of the best in the world - Maghsoodloo, Aronian and others. Michael Adams wins 13th London Chess Classic 2023, Gukesh third

52-year-old legend, Michael Adams won the 13th London Chess Classic 2023. He drew his final round game against fellow compatriot - IM Shreyas Royal to become the first English player to win the event. Adams scored an unbeaten 6/9, performed at 2770 and finished a half point ahead of the field. M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) drew against Jules Moussard (FRA) to finish sole second scoring 5.5/9. D Gukesh suffered a loss against Hans Niemann. He finished third and his journey towards the Candidates 2024 still continues at the next event. It has been an outstanding year for Adams who won Cambridge Open in February, English Open in May, British Championship in July, World Senior 50+ Championship in November and now London Classic. 18-year-old Aydin Suleymanli tops 9th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2023 Rapid with a 2740 performance

18-year-old Aydin Suleymanli (AZE) started the final day of 9th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2023 Rapid with a blazing win over Nijat Abasov (AZE). The teenager lost the penultimate round game against Vidit Gujrathi. However, he managed to bounce back in the final round to beat Arjun Erigaisi. Thus, Aydin became the top finisher of the Rapid segment with 11/18. Arjun, Jorden van Foreest (NED) and Vidit Gujrathi are close on his heels at 10/18. A full point going into the Blitz event can be the difference maker. Despite losing the first round and being the lowest rated player in the field, Aydin delivered a 2740 performance which is remarkable. 18 rounds of Blitz will be played today. Odisha Government collaborates with FIDE to promote chess, 100 chess centres to be opened in the state

Odisha has been making spectacular strides in growing chess recently. From the formation of their first fully government-funded chess academy Pro-Chess-Ta, to embarking on a project to open 100 chess centers around the state! The Deputy Chair of FIDE Management Board, Dana Reizniece-Ozola recently had a tour across India to promote women in chess and educational chess. On her journey, she also visited Odisha and met with the Chief Minister and Sports Authorities. GM Vidit Gujrathi has been having a string of great results in recent times. He put up a great show in the FIDE World Cup, and came very close to qualifying for the Candidates. He then went on to win the biggest tournament in his career - the FIDE Grand Swiss 2023, and qualified to the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024! Just a few days before the Grand Swiss, Vidit had started a new partnership - one which has proven to be very lucky for him. GM Vidit Gujrathi had become the Brand Ambassador of Ambit! S L Narayanan dominates 4th Elllobregat Open 2023 and Blitz Masters, Abhimanyu Puranik second

GM S L Narayanan scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 4th Elllobregat Open A 2023. He drew his last round game against GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) to become a clear champion. Four years later, Narayanan won the same tournament, bettered his score and won the Blitz Masters too. Fedoseev, GM Aravindh Chithambaram and GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored 7/9 each. After Playoffs between them, Abhimanyu secured second place, Fedoseev third and Aravindh fourth. The total prize fund was €57250. The top three prizes were €10000 + trophy, €5000 and €2000 each respectively. Before the Classical event, Narayanan won Torneo Blitz Masters, Ciutat de L'Hospitalet 50 x 50 on 29th November 2023. He scored an unbeaten 8/9, performed at 2933 and finished a half point ahead of the field. Fedoseev secured second place scoring sole 7.5/9 and GM Paulius Pultinevicius (LTU) 6.5/9 third.
