Levitov Chess Week 2023 Day 3: Svidler and Nepomniachtchi increase their lead

Vishy Anand started his second day at Levitov Chess Week 2023 with three losses. Then he drew against Ian Nepomniachtchi. The maestro finished the penultimate day with a win over Daniil Dubov. Both Peter Svidler and Nepomniachtchi scored an unbeaten 3.5/5 each to maintain their lead 9.5/14 each. They are now two points ahead of the competition. Levon Aronian (USA) and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) are the only two players at 7.5/14, followed by Anand and Dubov at 7/14 each. Last four will be played today. Who will win the tournament? Last weekend I gave our readers a puzzle which, I said, only a segment of our readers could possibly solve. But even amongst them there were very few who succeeded. One exception: super-talent Gukesh, who managed – with a little help. And he collapsed in helpless laughter when he got it. Another super-talent, Leon Mendonca, filmed it all. Here is the solution, together with a second prank I played on a young chess talent.

National Junior 2023 R6-7: Sneha Halder maintains her perfect score 7/7

Sneha Halder (WB) continues her fantastic form at 37th National Junior Under-19 Girls Championship 2023. She defeated Anishka Vikram (DEL) and Mrittika Mallick (WB) in Round 6 and 7, to increase her lead by a full point 7/7. Ishvi Aggarwal (HAR) is the only girl trailing her by a full point at 6/7. Alekhya Mukhopadhyay (WB) defeated Sathvik Adiga (KAR) to gain sole lead 6/6. However, in the seventh round, IM Manish Anto Cristiano F (TN) won against him to emerge as the new leader 6.5/7. Manish defeated the defending champion, Vrashank Chouhan (RAJ) in the previous round. CM Arjun Adireddy (TEL) defeated Srihari L in Round 7 to join Manish in the lead 6.5/7. 19th Asian Games 2022 R1-2: Humpy and Harika make a winning start

GM Koneru Humpy and GM Harika Dronavalli won both of their first two games at 19th Asian Games 2022. Humpy defeated WIM Mobina Alinasab (IRI) and IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen (VIE). Harika got the better of WCM Rouda Essa Alkerkal (UAE) and WGM Qianyun Gong (SGP). Teenager Rouda was winning for the better part of the game against Harika and Gong had decisive advantage too. In the Men's section, GM Vidit Gujrathi and GM Arjun Erigaisi won their first round games with ease. However, Vidit lost his second round game against IM Nogerbek Kazybek (KAZ). Interview with a legend: Dhruv Sawhney, owner of the Triveni Continental Kings

These days, we often see the word legend used lightly. People who have not achieved much are quoted as legends, and this leads to a reduction in the value of the word per se. However, when the right people are attributed with the term, it enhances the value of the word. And one such person who does justice to the word legend is Mr. Dhruv Sawhney. Dhruv is the Chairman and Managing Director of the Triveni Group, and the group owns a team in the Global Chess League called the Triveni Continental Kings. And this is the team that won the first edition of the GCL. IM Sagar Shah interviews Dhruv Sawhney and gets his thoughts on the event, the growth of chess, his thoughts on the sport, and lessons that he can share with the youngsters. It is fantastic that Mr. Sawhney, who was once the President of AICF for 12 years, is now back to chess!

Vidit, Arjun, Humpy and Harika start their 19th Asian Games 2022 campaign today

Nearly 13 years later, Chess is making a return at the 19th Asian Games 2022. Back in 2010 Asian Games, Harika Dronavalli was the sole Indian to win an individual Bronze medal. Indian Men won a Bronze medal at the team event. The individual event will take place from 24th to 27th September 2023. Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi, Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli are taking part in the individual events. Round 1 pairings are: IM Fahad Rahman (BAN) vs Vidit, GM Arjun vs IM Paulo Bersamina (PHI), GM Humpy vs WGM Mobina (IRI) and WCM Rouda (UAE) vs GM Harika. Round 1 and 2 starts today from 3 and 5 p.m. local time, 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. IST.

National Junior 2023 R1-5: Sneha topples Tejaswini

Sneha Halder (WB) defeated the newly crowned Asian Junior Girls 2023 champion, WIM Tejaswini G (TN). The reigning National Amateur U2300 Women 2023 and National Under-13 Girls 2022 champion, seized her opportunity when Tejaswini miscalculated a tactic and blundered her rook. She could not recover it for the rest of the game and lost. Sneha is the sole leader among girls at 5/5. She is closely followed by Mrittika Mallick (WB), Anishka Vikram (DEL) and Marium Fatima (BIH) at 4.5/5 each. In the 52nd National Junior Open, Alekhya Mukhopadhyay (WB) and Sathvik Adiga (KAR) are the coleaders at 5/5. They will face each other in Round 6 which starts today from 9:30 a.m. IST today. Vishy Anand started his second day at Levitov Chess Week 2023 with a loss against Alexander Grischuk. He does not know why he opted for a complicated line against the three-time World Blitz champion. Then he scored 2/3 in the next three games including a crucial win against then tournament leader, Levon Aronian (USA). Golden Girl Tejaswini G becomes the latest Woman International Master of India

15-year-old Tejaswini G can be called currently the Golden Girl of Indian chess. Why? Because she became champion at National Sub-Junior Under-15 Girls 2022, Western Asian Youth Under-16 Girls 2023 and Asian Junior 2023 Girls in just over nine months. The Gold at Western Asian earned her the first WIM-norm. However, the Gold at Asian Junior made her India's latest Woman International Master by virtue of a direct title rule. She also crossed the rating criteria for direct title rule of 2000 in the live ratings. India got its last WIM few months ago in the form of Nimmy A George. She is also Kerala's first WIM. Vishy Anand made a fantastic start at Levitov Chess Week 2023. He scored an impressive 3.5/5 on the first day, trailing the sole leader Levon Aronian (USA) by a half point. The maestro scored his first win of the event in a superb way against Wesley So (USA) in the third round. First he sacrificed his knight, then rook and finally the queen. Although the queen sacrifice was not a true sacrifice because he was getting it back by promoting another. Nevertheless, the win is one for the future chess books for sure. Soham Bhattacharyya dominates Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 Under-19 Rapid

Soham Bhattacharyya scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 All Bengal Under-19 Rapid. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Arpan Das, top seed of the tournament - IM Shahil Dey and second seeded FM Sourath Biswas scored 7.5/9. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Top three prizes were ₹5000 + trophy, ₹3000 and ₹2000 each respectively. The teenager had also secured a second runner-up place finish at the Blitz Open, two days prior to this event. Soham scored his maiden IM-norm at Serbia Masters 2023 in July. His present Classical Elo rating is 2477. Anwesh Upadhyaya wins Akshayakalpa Fiesta Rapid Rating Open 2023

Dr. IM Anwesh Upadhyaya and Vignesh B scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at Akshayakalpa Fiesta Rapid Rating Open 2023. Anwesh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Vignesh was placed second. They did not face each other. Apoorv Kamble, Sathvik Adiga, Gugan G and Madhesh Kumar S scored 8/9. They were adjudged third to sixth respectively. 11-year-old Rosh Jain won the Blitz Open 8/9. Team Magizhchi comprising IM C R G Krishna and WGM Srija Seshadri scored 11/12 to win the Mixed Doubles event. The total cash prize fund for the entire fiesta was ₹300000. The top three prizes in Rapid were ₹25000 + trophy, ₹20000 and ₹18000, for Blitz it was ₹5000, ₹4500 and ₹4000 each, for Mixed Doubles they were ₹10000, ₹8000 and ₹7000 each. It was truly a chess fiesta as the Rapid Rating Open event witnessed 741 players and the combined participation in the entire fiesta was 1018. Swapnil Dhopade dominates 7th Negombo International Chess Festival 2023

GM Swapnil Dhopade scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win 7th Negombo International Chess Festival Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. S D Nadev Insara (SRI) scored 8.5/10 to secure second place. R K T Dissanayake (SRI) edged past nine other players to be placed third scoring 8/10. The total prize fund of the tournament was about LKR 900000. The top three prizes in the Classical event were LKR 100000, 80000 and 40000 along with a trophy and medal each. Sri Lanka no.2 IM L M S T De Silva scored 8.5/9 to win the Blitz event. The no.1 of Sri Lanka, FM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage also scored 8.5/9 to share first place. CM A A C B Amarasinghe (SRI) finished third 7.5/9. The top three prizes in Blitz were LKR 30000, 20000 and 15000 along with a trophy and medal each.This is Swapnil's first individual tournament triumph since June 2017. 36th National Under-7 Open and Girls Championships 2023 preview

The 36th edition of National Under-7 Open and Girls Chess Championships 2023 starts tomorrow. A total of 366 players, 243 in the Open and 123 in the Girls category are slated to take part. Divith Reddy Adulla (TEL) and Anupriya Yadav (UP) are going to be the top seeds in their respective Open and Girls section as of now. Both of them are the reigning State champions of their respective age group. This is a special event for many children as it will be their first National championship/major event of their life. They will create memories both on and off the board. The total prize fund of the tournament is ₹500000, ₹250000 each in Open and Girls section. The top three prizes are ₹50000, ₹36000 and ₹30000.
