Harikrishna wins French Top 16 for Asnières le Grand Échiquier

India no.4 and World no.32 Pentala Harikrishna won French Top 16 Club Championship for Asnières le Grand Échiquier. This was the first time in history the team became champion at this event. His teammates were - World Blitz 2021 champion, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Andrey Esipenko, Grigoriy Oparin, Jules Moussard, Yannick Pelletier, Matthieu Cornette, Pauline Guichard, Kirill Alekseenko, Jean-Marc Degraeve, Sergei Movsesian and Yosha Iglesias. Bischwiller also scored the same 29 points, however, Asnières le Grand Échiquier won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. They remained undefeated at this event and currently unbeaten for 62nd matches. C'Chartres secured their first-ever podium finish. Harshad and Harikrishnan triumph at 1st Kanyakumari Parents Forum Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023

FM Harshad S scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Kanyakumari Parents Forum Rapid Rating Open 2023. The reigning Western Asia Rapid and Blitz U-18 Open double Gold medalist finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Rathanvel V S and Aswath S secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. In the Blitz event, IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra edged past the Rapid event winner, Harshad to become the champion. Harshad secured place 8.5/9. Aswath once again was placed third with the same score 8/9. The total prize fund combining both events was ₹300000, ₹200000 for Rapid and ₹100000 for Blitz. The top three prizes in Rapid were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000, for Blitz it was ₹15000, ₹10000 and ₹8000 each respectively. This was Harikrishnan's fourth rating tournament triumph of 2023.

Divya Deshmukh Golden, Silver for Mary Ann Gomes at Asian Continental Women 2023

IM Divya Deshmukh drew against WIM Xeniya Balabayeva (KAZ) in the final round to clinch the Gold at Asian Continental Women 2023. Divya scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 and finished a full point ahead of the competition. WGM Mary Ann Gomes edged past IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) on tie-breaks to secure the Silver medal, Munguntuul got Bronze. Divya won two medals in two consecutive Asian Continental Women events. In 2022, she won Gold in Blitz and Bronze in Classical, now Gold in Classical and Silver in Blitz. Mary also won a medal each in consecutive Asian events - Silver in Blitz last year and now Silver in Classical. Mary and GM Abhimanyu Puranik qualifies to their respective FIDE World Cup starting next month. Grandmaster Chess Training Festival at Udaipur by Kingdom of Chess

Kingdom of Chess organized a Grandmaster Training Camp in Udaipur, Rajasthan last month. GM Debashis Das and the founder of the academy, Chandrajeet Rajawat provided the main guidance. It also featured experienced trainers of the state - Gautam Kataria, Dhruv Dak and Naman Porwal. The objective of the camp was to strengthen the state's top youngsters and get them ready for their upcoming events. It was a residential camp where both trainers and students resided on campus, consumed healthy food, followed a strict routine and stayed away from any kind of electronic gadgets. S Rohith Krishna aces 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023

IM S Rohith Krishna drew his final round game against GM Aleksej Aleksandrov to win 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. The teenager won his third consecutive tournament after winning 19th Malakoff Open 2023 in France and Ostravský Koník Open A in Czech Republic. He won a tournament each in April, May and now June. The boy from Tamil Nadu scored 9/11 and finished a full point ahead of the competition. Six players - GM Laxman R R, IM Raahul V S, GM Aleksej Aleksandrov, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, IM Kushagra Mohan and IM Neelash Saha scored 8/11 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. The two-time reigning National Under-17 Open champion, CM Mayank Chakraborty earned his maiden GM and IM-norms. Rounak Pathak wins Elegant 36th Below 1850 Rating Tournament 2023

Rounak Pathak scored a perfect 5/5 to win 36th Elegant Below 1850 Rating Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Shuvam Roy and Subhabrata Roy scored 4.5/5 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was Tk 35000. The top three prizes were Tk 6000, 4000 and 3000 each respectively. This was Rounak's first rating tournament triumph. The two-day five-round Swiss league rating tournament was organized by and at Elegant International Chess Academy on 12th and 13th May 2023. Divya Deshmukh eyes Gold at Asian Continental Women 2023

IM Divya Deshmukh defeated WIM Meruert Kamalidenova (KAZ) convincingly in the penultimate round of Asian Continental Women 2023. She needs a draw in the final round against WIM Xeniya Balabayeva (KAZ) to become a clear champion. WGM Mary Ann Gomes averted disaster in the opening against WIM Alua Nurmanova (KAZ). She turned things around eventually and won the game. Mary and top seed IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) are at 6/8 each, a full point behind Divya 7/8. Both of them have medal chances. In the Open event, GM Abhimanyu Puranik defeated IM Aronyak Ghosh in a sharp battle. Abhimanyu along with three other players are at 6/8, a half point behind the sole leader GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB). Abhimanyu must win the last round to have medal hopes. Nakamura wins 11th Norway Chess 2023 in a photo finish, Gukesh third

Hikaru Nakamura spoiled Fabiano Caruana's fantastic run at 11th Norway Chess 2023 by winning against him in the final round. Despite leading the tournament for the better part of it, Caruana gave away a pawn in the middlegame, for which he never got any compensation. The Speed King is someone who does not let these opportunities slip by. He converted his advantage very neatly without giving any fragment of opportunity for his opponent to bounce back. Thus the former World Championship Challenger had to be content with a second place finish. For the first time since 2019, Norway Chess had a new winner. D Gukesh drew both Classical and Armageddon against Wesley So. He won the Armageddon as per the rules of the match and went on to finish third. Asian Continental 2023 R7: Divya Deshmukh takes a full-point lead

In the all-Indian battle at the top board, India's latest Female IM came out on top. IM Divya Deshmukh won against WGM Mary Ann Gomes, where the latter blundered in a complex Rook ending. With this win, Divya is leading the women's section with 6/7 points. In the Open section, GM Arjun Erigaisi had a draw against the tournament leader GM Shamsiddin Vokidov (UZB). Aronyak Ghosh is just half a point behind Shamsiddin, as he defeated one of the World's top juniors GM Pranav V with the White pieces in a chaotic battle. IM Aronyak Ghosh is the only Indian player with 5.5/6, while GMs Abhimanyu Puranik. Arjun Erigaisi and Prraneeth Vuppala trail behind with 5/6. The Alekhine (1.e4 Nf6) is a rare guest in general and especially at a high-level. During the pandemic, however, this daring opening has been employed on several occasions, notably by the World Champion Magnus Carlsen. A faster time-control and perhaps the unusual atmosphere created by online games probably helped some players unleash, from time to time, a marginal opening to surprise their opponents. Playing the Alekhine on a regular basis is quite demanding, not to say a bit foolish. Not that this provocative opening is bad, but some paths have been established where White can more easily claim a slight advantage out of the opening than against a more classical opening. WGM Mary Ann Gomes showed her class as she defeated the top seed IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) in Round 6 of Asian Continental Women 2023. There is a reason she has won lots of accolades and laurels over the years. IM Divya Deshmukh won against WIM Alua Nurmanova (KAZ) with ease. Both Mary and Divya are the coleaders in the Women's event with a 5/6 score. They will face each other in the seventh round. In the Open section, GM Arjun Erigaisi could not find a way to break his opponent IM Madaminov Mukhiddin's (UZB) resistance. The All-Indian battle between GM Pranav V and GM Abhimanyu Puranik ended in a draw. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R8: Gukesh crushes Tari, now World no.13

D Gukesh is having the tournament of his life at 11th Norway Chess 2023. He defeated Aryan Tari in a beautiful game where his c and d-pawns reached the seventh rank in the middlegame. Yes, you have to see it to believe it. The teenager scored the only Classical victory of the round. This win not only propelled him to the third place in the tournament standings, but also moved him up to World no.13 in the live ratings. That day is not very far when Gukesh will break into World top 10 and surpass Vishy Anand to become the new India no.1 too. Magnus Carlsen defeated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in Armageddon. S Rohith Krishna on the verge of winning 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023

IM S Rohith Krishna registered his fourth win in-a-row in the penultimate round of 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. What seemed like an opening trap from the outside, was actually unfolding in front of everyone's eyes, just like the players. Rohith defeated IM Milosz Szpar to increase his lead to a full point heading into the final round. He is now at 8.5/10. IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, GM Aleksej Aleksandrov and GM Laxman R R are the only three players at 7.5/10 each. Rohith needs a draw against Aleksej in the final round to become a clear champion. Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani win the Maharashtra Challenge Match 2023

Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani won Maharashtra Challenge Match 2023. They both dominated their respective opponents Peter Svidler and Nigel Short. Raunak won the match with six games and a day to spare, Vidit clinched it with four games left on the final day. The India no.3 won ₹1000000, while Svidler received ₹600000. The teenager Raunak received ₹300000, while the veteran Short got ₹200000. Raunak dominated all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz. Vidit scored more in Classical and Rapid events. Svidler was better in Blitz. This was a FIDE-Rated event, so both Vidit and Raunak won some valuable Elo rating points, apart from gaining a wealth of experience in their home state of Maharashtra.
