2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R9: S Rohith Krishna emerges sole leader

IM S Rohith Krishna defeated FM Vedant Panesar to emerge sole leader at 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. 13-year-old, reigning two-time National Under-17 Open champion, CM Mayank Chakraborty outplayed GM Alexei Fedorov. The veteran made some positional inaccuracy which the teenager correctly capitalized on. This win earned him his maiden GM and IM-norm. IM Kushagra Mohan and untitled Sanket Chakravarty held the top seed GM Boris Savchenko and the third seed GM Luka Paichadze to a draw each. FM Ayush Sharma defeated IM Sammed Shete after the latter made an incorrect exchange which increased the vulnerability of his king. Harikrishnan clinches May Day Celebration Rapid Rating Open 2023

Both IM Harikrishnan A Ra and IM Srihari L R scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 each. Harikrishnan won May Day Celebration Rapid Rating Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. Srihari was adjudged third. Seven players scored 7/9 each. IM Rathanvel V S edged past six other players to secure third place. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. The one-day rapid rating tournament organized by Azure Chess Institute and chessfee.com witnessed the participation of 368 players including a GM and 7 IMs. This was Harikrishnan's third rating tournament triumph of 2023.

Asian Continental 2023 R1-4: Abhimanyu Puranik and Divya Deshmukh in the lead

GM Abhimanyu Puranik defeated IM Madaminov Mukhiddin (KAZ) to join the lead with five more players at Asian Continental 2023. Abhimanyu won an exciting game against IM Arystabek Urazayev (KAZ) in the third round. GM Arjun Erigaisi has managed to win three games in-a-row after missing the first round as he was travelling from Dubai, UAE. GM Pranav V, GM Sethuraman S P and IM Aditya Samant are also at 3/4 each. In the Women's event, IM Divya Deshmukh defeated WGM-elect WIM Sakshi Chitlange to move to 3.5/4. She is now the coleader with IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL). 11th Norway Chess 2023 R7: Caruana loses on time in Armageddon against Gukesh

D Gukesh continues his great run at 11th Norway Chess 2023. The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, drew the Classical game against the tournament sole leader, Fabiano Caruana. In the Armageddon, the teenager was lost in the queen endgame. However, the American ran out of time and lost the game. Thus, Gukesh won the match. Caruana is still in sole lead 14.5/21 followed by Hikaru Nakamura 12.5/21. Nakamura defeated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in a thrilling Armageddon in a back and forth game. Magnus Carlsen continues to struggle winning a Classical game at this event. IM S Rohith Krishna continues his terrific form. A day after beating the top seed of the tournament, Rohith won against the third seeded, GM Luka Paichadze (GEO). His preparation worked out as the Georgian made some positional inaccuracies and later lost an exchange. FM Vedant Panesar drew his game against IM Milosz Szapar (POL). Thus, Milos, Rohith and Vedant are now in a three-way lead 6.5/8. IM Neelash Saha, CM Mayank Chakraborty and GM Alexei Fedorov are close on their heels at 6/8 each. They defeated FM Ritviz Parab, GM Vladimir Burmakin and IM Sammed Shete respectively. The top three boards will witness - Rohith vs Vedant, Milosz vs Neelash and Mayank vs Fedorov in Round 9. Diptayan Ghosh and Sammed Shete win 1st RCPP Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023

GM Diptayan Ghosh and IM Sammed Jaykumar are the winners of 1st RCPP Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023. Four players - Diptayan, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM Ratnakaran K and GM Deep Sengupta scored 8/9 in Rapid. Except Ratnakaran, the remaining three remained undefeated. In the Blitz event, They were placed first to fourth according to tie-breaks. In Blitz also four players finished with 8/9 each. They are - Sammed, Diptayan, Deepan and IM Krishnater Kushager. They secured the first four places respectively. Only the top two remained undefeated. Diptayan and Deepan secured podium finishes in both events. Total prize fund of the events was ₹300000, ₹200000 for Rapid and ₹100000 for Blitz. Top three prizes in Rapid were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R6: Gukesh wins Armageddon against Giri

D Gukesh drew the Classical game against Anish Giri (NED) in Round 6 of 11th Norway Chess 2023. It was a well contested draw. Gukesh prevailed in the Armageddon against Giri. He moved to 8.5/18. Fabiano Caruana scored the sole Classical victory of the round against Nodirbek Abdusattorov. This is also his first win in a rated game against the former World Rapid champion. Caruana once again increased his lead by 1.5 points as he is now at 13.5/18 and also became World no.2 in the live ratings. Magnus Carlsen avenged his last edition's Armageddon loss against Aryan Tari. Round 7 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R7: Milosz and Vedant Panesar are the coleaders

IM Sammed Shete had a well contested draw against GM Luka Paichadze (GEO) in the seventh round of 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. IM Milosz Szapar (POL) defeated GM Levon Babujian (ARM) to stay in the lead 6/7. FM Vedant Panesar continues his fantastic form as he won against the former Asian Junior Open champion, IM Raahul V S in a dominated fashion. Vedant and Milosz are the only two players at 6/7. They will face each other in the eighth round. IM S Rohith Krishna scored a comfortable victory over the top seed GM Boris Savchenko. Sanket Chakravarty missed a great opportunity to beat the in-form IM Viani Antonio Dcunha. Luka, Sammed and Rohith are trailing by a half point at 5.5/7 each. Pranav Venkatesh and Divya Deshmukh clinch Silver at Asian Continental Blitz 2023 Open and Women

FM Arystan Isanzhulov (KAZ), GM Pranav Venkatesh and GM Denis Makhnev (KAZ) scored 7.5/9 each at Asian Continental Blitz 2023 Open. They won Gold, Silver and Bronze medal each respectively. Pranav's sole loss of the event was against the eventual winner, Isanzhulov. All three podium finishers suffered a loss each. The defending Asian Continental Blitz Women champion, IM Divya Deshmukh scored 7/9 to secure Silver. She finished a half point behind the winner, WIM Xeniya Balabayeva (KAZ) 7.5/9. WGM Turmunk Munkhzul (MGL) scored 6.5/9 to clinch Bronze. Divya lost two games against Xeniya and WIM Nazerke Nurgali (KAZ). GM Sethuraman S P is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. Aravindh Chithambaram wins 23rd Dubai Open 2023 for the second consecutive year, Arjun Erigaisi third

Arjun Erigaisi drew his final round game against Aravindh Chithambaram. The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) also drew his game against M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI). Thus, the four leaders ended up finishing with the same score 6.5/9. Aravindh won 23rd Dubai Open 2023 on tie-breaks, Sindarov second and Arjun was placed third. This is the second consecutive year Aravindh has won the Dubai Open. He remained undefeated on both occasion. This performance of his brought him closer to 2650 Elo rating. India currently has nine players in the World top 100 in live ratings. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R5: Gukesh beats Abdusattorov

D Gukesh drew the Classical game against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) in Round 5 of 11th Norway Chess 2023. He was completely winning the Armageddon against the former World Rapid champion. However, Gukesh decided to repeat moves as draw with Black in Armageddon results in winning it and the match. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) scored the only two Classical wins of the round against the tournament leader Fabiano Caruana (USA) and birthday boy - Aryan Tari (NOR). The 'Speed King' Nakamura is now World no.2 again. Magnus Carlsen defeated Anish Giri in Armageddon to win the match. Round 6 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R5-6: Vedant Panesar squashes Boris Savchenko in 20 moves!

FM Vedant Panesar crushed the top seed of the tournament, GM Boris Savchenko in just 20 moves in Round 5. The former National under-17 champion, used his preparation to score a victory in less than three hours, fastest among the top boards of the round. IM Raahul V S and IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete won their respective fifth round games and drew their six encounter against each other. GM Levon Babujian (ARM) and IM Milos Saposz (POL) joined them in the lead 5/6. Seven players are trailing them by a half point 4.5/6 including the sole untitled player, Sanket Chakravarty. Arjun Erigaisi defeated the China no.2 and World no.19 Yangyi Yu in the penultimate round of 23rd Dubai Open 2023. The India no.5 did what the position required him to do in the endgame and managed to outsmart his opponent to join the leaders. Aravindh Chithambaram missed his fourth consecutive opportunity to win and ended up splitting the point with Abhijeet Gupta. He is still in the championship race. Arjun and Aravindh will face each other in the final round. 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) and Maxim Matlakov are the remaining two leaders at 6/8 each. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R4: Gukesh draws the Classical against Carlsen

D Gukesh drew his second Classical rated game ever against Magnus Carlsen. Earlier this year, he drew against the world no.1 at 85th Tata Steel Masters 2023. In the Classical battle, Gukesh navigated the queen endgame quite well. It lasted more than 50% of the entire game. The Armageddon was a chaotic encounter which saw Gukesh sacrificing his queen in a must-win game and eventually losing the game after blundering a piece. The result might have gone in the Norwegian's favor. However, Gukesh showed once again, that he is ready to take Carlsen in any format of the game. Fabiano Caruana scored the sole Classical victory of the round against Alireza Firouzja. Round 5 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R4: Raahul makes an incredible save against Luka

IM Raahul V S showed gritty defense against GM Luka Paichadze (GEO) in Round 4 of 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. Despite being down by two pawns, the former Asian Junior champion, stormed his king down the board before using his rooks to unsettle his opponent. FM Vedant Panesar, FM Sharan Rao and IM Kushagra Mohan joined the previous round leaders Raahul, IM Sammed Shete, Luka and FM Harshad S at 3.5/4 each. Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani scored emphatic victories against Peter Svidler and Nigel Short to take 2-1 lead. Vidit made a short work of Svidler in just 23 moves.
