Harsha Bharathakoti - The Humble Powerhouse

MPL 41st National Team Chess Championship 2022 got over a few days ago. India's 56th GM Harsha Bharathakoti won the tournament for his team, Airports Authority of India. He also won an individual Silver medal on Board no.3. Last month, he tied for the first place at 19th Delhi International GM Open 2022. He beat Richard Rapport, Kirill Shevchenko, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, David Anton Guijarro, drew with Nodribek Abdusattorov at World Blitz 2021 and won against Rauf Mamedov, Vladislav Kovalev, Volodymyr Onyshchuk, drew with Vladislav Artemiev, Maxim Matlakov and Sergei Movsesian at World Rapid 2021. Airports Authority of India flies high at MPL National Team Open and Women Chess Championship 2022

Airports Authority of India dominated MPL 41st National Team Open and 19th National Team Women's championship 2022. They won both Open and Women event without losing a single match. In the Open event, AAI, RSPB A and RSPB B, all three teams scored 16.0/18. They drew their games against each other. AAI and RSPB A had the same match and game points. Thus, the third tie-break decided the championship in favor of AAI. RSPB A and RSPB B were placed second and third respectively. Goutham Krishna and Shubhi Gupta are the MPL 34th National Under-12 Open and Girls Chess Champions

Goutham Krishna H (KER) defeated Aakash G (TN) and Shubhi Gupta (UP) won against Sherali Pattnaik (UTT) in the final round to clinch the championship. Arjun Adireddy (TEL) and Ethan Vaz (Goa) scored 9.0/11 each. They secured second and third position according to tie-breaks. In the Girls event, Shreya G Hipparagi (MAH) drew with Saparya Ghosh (WB). Both Shubhi and Shreya scored 9.0/11. However, Shubhi clinched the championship due to better tie-breaks and Shreya was placed second. Saparya edged past Nivedita V C (TN) in tie-breaks to secure third position 8.5/11. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹800000, ₹400000 for each event. Pranav Venkatesh wins 1st BCF Rapid Rating Open 2022

IM Pranav Venkatesh scored an unbeaten 7.0/7. He finished a half point ahead of the field to win 1st BCF Rapid Rating Open 2022. Three players scored 6.5/7 - IM Praveen Kumar C, R Ashwath and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H. They were placed second to fourth according to the tie-breaks. Pranav won ₹25000 cash and a trophy, Runner-up Praveen earned ₹20000 and Ashwath received ₹15000 cash as their respective prize. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹150000. The one-day seven-round rapid rating tournament was organized by Bruno Chess Foundation on 3rd April at Velankanni Public School, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

MPL 34th National U-12 R9-10: Goutham and Shreya eye the championships

Goutham Krishna H (KER) ended Ethan Vaz's (Goa) unbeaten run in the ninth round of MPL 34th National Under-12 Chess Championship 2022. This win allowed him to catch up with Ethan. Top seed Arjun Adireddy (TEL) defeated Ethan, handing him his second consecutive loss of the day. Goutham drew with Mrinmoy Rajkhowa (ASM) to take sole lead 8.5/10. In the Girls event, top seed Shubhi Gupta (UP) defeated Prishita Gupta (DEL) before losing to Shreya G Hipparagi (MAH) in the penultimate round. Shreya has now taken sole lead 8.5/10. Praggnanandhaa conquers the historic Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022

GM Praggnanandhaa joined the long line of legendary winners of Reykjavik Open. Among the world champions, Mikhail Tal, Vassily Smyslov won the round-robin editions in the first ten years. Among the Indians, Harikrishna (2006), Abhijeet Gupta (2010 and 2016) and Adhiban (2018) won the presitigious event. Abhijeet, Adhiban and now Praggnanandhaa, each of them won clear first. Gukesh was moments away from winning the tournament when he blundered and lost the game. Apart from Pragg, Abhijeet Gupta is the only other Indian to finish in top 10. He scored 6.5/9 to finish at shared seventh place. IM Tania Sachdev scored 6.0/9 to win the Best Woman prize. She is the highest finisher among female participants.

MPL 34th National U-12 R7-8: Ethan Vaz and Shubhi Gupta emerge as the dominant sole leaders

Ethan Vaz (Goa) is aiming for a triple hat-trick as he won both of his seventh and eighth convincingly in MPL 32nd National Under-12 Open National Chess Championship 2022. The Goan boy disposed both Maharashtra kids Vivaan Vijay Saraogi and Aansh Nandan Nerurkar without any difficulty. He is now a full point ahead of the field. Goutham Krishna H (KER) is the only one at 7.0/8. In the Girls event, top seed Shubhi Gupta (UP) won both of her games. Kvika Reykjavik Open R8: Praggnanandhaa crushes Cornette in 25 moves

GM Praggnanandhaa set the board on fire as he crushed Matthieu Cornette (FRA, 2569) in 25 moves. He is now one of the three leaders along with GM Max Warmerdam (NED) and GM Mads Andersen (DEN) at 6.5/8. Pragg will square off against India's youngest GM D Gukesh in the final round. He scored a beautiful victory over GM Johann Hjartarson (ISL) in the penultimate round. Gukesh is at 6.0/8 with six other players. IM Tania Sachdev missed an opportunity to draw against GM Mads. MPL 34th National U-12 R5-6: Ethan Vaz scores a double hat-trick, gains sole lead

Sadbhav Rautela (UTT) got himself closest to upstage Ethan Vaz (Goa) in the fifth round of MPL 32nd National Under-12 Open Chess Championship 2022. However, the Uttarakhand boy was unable to make the most out of opportunity and allowed his opponent to turn things around. Md. Reyan (BIH) could not handle the big match pressure against Ethan and blundered terribly which ended the game immediately. Thus, the kid from Goa is currently the sole leader in the Open event 6.0/6. After a draw in Round 5, Delhites Prishita Gupta and Aadhya Jain won their respective games in the following round. IM Tania Sachdev started Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022 with only 1.5/3. Then she won her next four games in-a-row. The seventh round victory against Iceland no.2 GM Hedinn Steingrimsson is extra special. She showed her resilience and beat his opponent in a completely lost queen endgame. Adhiban, Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh all three of them were unable to beat him. Aadhya Jain (DEL) defeated the top seed of the Girls event, Shubhi Gupta (UP) in Round 4 of MPL 32nd National Under-12 Chess Championship. Shubhi was unable to realize her advantage in a complex position. Her exchange sacrifice turned out to be inaccurate as her opponent returned the exchange in the next few moves before going into a winning major piece endgame. Soundarya Kumar Pradhan clinches 15th AICFB National Chess Championship

Soundarya Kumar Pradhan (ODI) ended six-time consecutive National champion Kishan Gangolli's (KAR) eight-year long reign. The 22-year-old from Odisha scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to finish a half point ahead of the field and become National Blind Chess Champion. This is his maiden National title. Defending champion, Kishan scored 7.0/9, remained undefeated and secured second position. Swapanil Shah, Marimuthu K and Somender B L scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed third to fifth according to the tie-breaks. The top five finishers will represent India at the upcoming IBCA World Team Championship. Praggnanandhaa likes to take chances when he can. In the fifth round of Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022, Pragg's attempt to score a win almost happened until he missed an intermezzo against Iceland no.2 GM Hedinn Steingrimsson. Gukesh had a short 22-move draw against Brazil no.2 Alexandr Fier. Raunak Sadhwani lost a completely winning game against GM Simon Williams. Adhiban had a mysterious draw in a winning position against IM Brandon Clarke. Abhijeet Gupta was held to a draw by Indonesia no.1 woman Irine Kharisma Sukandar. 9-year-old Ayaan Garg (CHA) stunned one of the tournament favorites Mrinmoy Rajkhowa (ASM) in Round 2 of MPL 34th National Under-12 Open Chess Championship 2022. When Mrinmoy was unable to find a complex long line to seize his advantage, a retreat cost him the upper hand and the balance completely shifted towards the kid from Chandigarh. He converted his advantage without giving any chance to his opponent. In the Girls event, Daksha Rudra (WB) defeated second-seeded Arshiya Das (TRI) in the first round. MPL 31st National Under-18 Chess Championships 2022 preview

180 players are expected to take part in MPL 31st National Under-18 Open and Girls Chess Championship 2022. India's 73rd GM Bharath Subramaniyam H will be the top seed in the Open section, WFM Jyothsna L will be among Girls. The tournament will have a total prize fund ₹900,000. Each group has a prize fund of ₹450,000, the first prize being ₹90000 in each section. It will be organized by Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, Pollachi & Coimbatore District Chess Association from 18th to 23rd April 2022.
