In the June 2026 FIDE rating list, Arjun Erigaisi remains the only Indian in the world top 10, while thirteen Indians feature in the Open top 100. In the women's section, eight Indians are ranked among the world's top 100 players. Shubhi Gupta's rise to World No. 32 following her strong showing at the Munich Chess Festival is among the highlights for Indian chess. The COB Revival semifinals produced two dominant 2-0 results with contrasting styles. In Semifinal 1, Joel Dsouza defeated Vivek Desai through strong central play, tactical precision, and a composed endgame conversion, eventually securing a hard-fought draw in Game 2 to reach the final. In Semifinal 2, Prakhar Gupta completed a clean sweep over Samay Raina, consistently neutralizing aggressive pawn storms and converting superior endgame positions in both games to book his place in the final. The event concluded with a lighthearted third-place match, where Samay defeated Vivek in a tactical Sicilian battle and claimed the symbolic ₹500 prize in a fittingly entertaining finish. Day 1 leaders Prakhar and Joel faced a tough second day, while Super PogChamps winner Samay Raina rose to the occasion as always to turn the tables. Samay not only defeated Trace in the final round of the round-robin stage but also clinched their Armageddon tiebreaker with the Black pieces. R Praggnanandhaa defeated World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen for the second consecutive time at Norway Chess 2026. Praggnanandhaa won against Magnus in the 4th round with white pieces, and he defeated Magnus with the black pieces in the 8th round. It was an intense battle where Praggnanandhaa kept Magnus under pressure and finally under time pressure, Magnus made a crucial mistake and lost the game. Boris Savchenko Wins KIIT International Chess 2026; Aronyak Ghosh Finishes 3rd

GM Boris Savchenko scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 points to win the 17th KIIT International Chess Festival 2026 (Category 'A' 1900 & Above). Aleksandrov Aleksej, Aronyak Ghosh, Mayank Chakraborty, and Nguyen Duc Hoa scored 8/10 points to finish in 2nd to 5th places according to the tiebreak scores. KIIT festival had India's largest ever prize fund of 1.31 Crores across all 3 categories. A 2-day Big Chess Summer Camp was organized at Rajpoot Dhaba in Bhadohi on 27-28 May 2026. The consistent efforts of Shreejan Learning Hub Foundation have significantly contributed to the growth of chess activities in the district. Bhadohi recently gained attention after its Duolingo Dreamers team represented India at the FIDE World Schools Team Chess Championship 2026 (Asian Continental Stage) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The camp was jointly organized by Shreejan Learning Hub and Teach Chess India, an initiative of ChessBase India, to introduce more children to chess and strengthen the skills of existing players.

The Big Chess Summer Camp 2026 concluded on 24th May after seven memorable days at Phoenix Marketcity, Mumbai. A total of 671 participants visited the camp, making it one of the most vibrant editions yet. The camp created countless special moments for everyone who was a part of it. We welcomed special guests, witnessed inspiring stories, saw new friendships being formed, and watched players of all ages come together through their love for chess. Moving away from massive 32 player elimination formats of the lockdown era, this edition gathers 8 battle-hardened Indian Comedian Chess Players for a intense round robin tournament held over the board for the qualification into the Knockouts. The tournament is held over four days at Habitat, Mumbai where audience can join in to witness live commentary sitting in front of casters, meet and greet sessions and much more. 35 Golds, 92 Medals! Team India Absolute Champions at Commonwealth Chess Championship 2026

Indian players showed their dominance at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2026, conducted at Hotel Citrus, Kalutara, Sri Lanka, from 17th to 25th May 2026. GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 points to win the Open section, and Srihari L R secured 3rd place. Indian players secured a total of 12 Golds in the standard format, 11 Golds in Rapid, and 12 Golds in Blitz across all categories. In a bid to promote the culture of chess solving in the country, we at ChessBase India have been organising regular solving contests across India. Yet one challenge has become increasingly apparent: many enthusiasts are eager to solve, but few have had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of chess composition and the techniques that experienced solvers employ. Before we can build a thriving solving culture, this knowledge must become more widely accessible. It is with this goal in mind that we are launching Inside The Solver's Mind — an online learning programme designed to bring the joy and art of solving chess compositions to everyone. In this article, we take a closer look at the initiative and what participants can expect from it.
